2009 CT Barrel Project Cabernet Sauvignon Black Sears Vineyard (USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain) 7/11/2021Wrighty

Mint and eucalyptus nose, very fresh but not much fruit. Palate is clean but showing secondary flavours of dried meat and leather. Also some black tea. Good long finish, wood comes through plus some soft tannining hinting at maybe a few more years? (418 views)

This was the wine of the 4 last night. Maturing nicely and showing subtle secondary flavours and a balance rounded palate. Finished off on day 2 and still drinking wonderfully. (601 views)

Getting a little long in the tooth now, but still drinking quite well. Less fruit, but fine cohesion across the palate. A little sherry note at the end. I think I'll kill my last soldier by end of 2019. (997 views)

Medium garnet red with lighter edges. Lovely nose with dark cherries, dustiness, truffles, spices and forest floor. Medium tannins (5.5/10) and acidity is a bit high. Medium to medium plus bodied with notes of forest floor, dark spices, bramble berries, cherries, and a little floral. Medium plus bodied. Aged nicely for a 9 year old bottle. Drink till 2024. Last puppy. Still doing well and this bold wine makes an excellent mate to bold BBQ. (1234 views)

Followed over 6 hours open and it filled out very nicely around the 2-hour mark. Hazy garnet color with mature bricking, big legs and a tiny speck of sediment at the end. The nose is still profound and enticing, as well as ripe and zippy, revealing the terroir in due fashion. Fully resolved structure on the palate - very smooth and plush, but the fruit is also on the fade so if that's your thing, you better get on it. I'd say it's probably at the apex and should have another year or two before really starting to decline. #Nostradomus 5+12+17+7= 91 (1257 views)

Popped and poured. Deep garnet with no bricking. Nose of black currants, sour cherry, hints of blackberry and spicy oak. On the palate lush but not heavyweight with flavors of red currant, blackberry, black cherry, with hints of vanilla. Long balanced finish. This would show well in a lineup of high priced wines. Drink or hold, this has a good life ahead. (1324 views)

2009 CT Barrel Project Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mtn/Coombsville Blend (USA, California, Napa Valley) 2/3/2017fingers91

Over two years since I last checked in on this. Uncorked and slow-Od for about 4 hours. Still a nice dark ruby color, about 80% saturated with clear legs and a tiny amount of sediment. Nose is still quite primary and berry-driven. The palate is also quite unchanged from how I remember, but I also sense the cusp of maturity just setting in. I think another year or so will make this much more interesting, if not qualitatively better. It's always been a bit over-ripe in my mind and the heat will never go away, but age and oxygen should broaden the profile and add some intrigue.
Day two update: I gotta say, this really blossomed out with the long aeration and showed a lot more complexity and depth. By the end of the bottle, it was a "wow" wine. 5+11+17+8= 91 (1352 views)

Bought a case of these originally so felt like it was time to check in. Not sure that the wine has moved all that much in the last few years. We did a pnp and as we were serving to 9 people the bottle went fairly fast. It's clearly mountain fruit and a bit tight and darker. Tannins have maybe calmed down somewhat. Moving into the drinking window. Didn't take detailed notes, but my view was a nice evening drinker. (1000 views)

Had more balance of fruit, spice and earthiness then the blend. The acidity level played well with food. Tannins have mostly resolved. (1162 views)

Still on the fruity side with little depth of flavors. Nothing offensive, but no wow factor. Tannins have mostly resolved. (1015 views)

OK, this was popped and poured but didn't really hold my attention tonight. Little nose, maybe some dark fruit, leather and peppers followed by fumes. This followed through on the palate then a strong tannic, although very fine and integrated finish and a hit of alcohol.

To be fair as well, not in the best frames of mind and in that respect, probably hit the mark as a nice wine after a while of not drinking wine.... (1035 views)
