Community Tasting Notes (average 96.1 pts. and median of 96 pts. in 88 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Miceri on 12/22/2023 & rated 95 points: Medium dark browny red; concentrated, licorice, pepper; dark, dense, concentrated taste, lots of fruit; early stage of window - believe it will improve / open up more for years to come; tasted with Pegau’s special cuvee same year, which appeared more open and inviting and at its prime - gave both bottles same score (852 views)
Tasted by King Julien on 9/1/2023 & rated 96 points: Decanted about 2 hours. This bottle had excessive fine sediment that needed to be filtered out, but after that it was quite nice. Not the best bottle, but both nose and palate were enjoyable for a couple hours. (1140 views)
Tasted by oakville72 on 2/28/2023 & rated 97 points: The best Châteauneuf-du-Pape I've ever tasted. Deeply colored, nose of great complexity, mouth-filling flavors that go on and on. While no longer youthful, it still shows some tannins. Absolutely exquisite! Wouldn't it be great if all wines tasted this good? Enjoyed with a fantastic meal at Foretti's in Corona del Mar, CA. Tasted again in February 2024. (2009 views)
96 vvPunkte www.vvwine.ch (2289 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 6/17/2022: Excellent, it surprised me as I was not expecting to like it as much as I did...thinking it was going to be over the top in richness and extraction. Actually very, very well balanced, an incredible mouthfeel, super taste (deep red and blue fruits), garrigue, herbs. Yes, rich, but pulls it off. (3249 views)
Tasted by SB5784 on 6/6/2022 & rated 95 points: Showing quite well. An inky dark red / black hue. Nose of brooding dark berry fruit - blackberry, blackcurrant - and plum, complimented by Asian spices, licorice and black pepper. On the palate unctuous and silky in texture but with good linear focus and minerality to balance the full bodied and powerfully concentrated fruit character. Rather high in alcohol. Very long finish. Delicious and just entering a likely long drinking window. No rush here, but no shame in opening either. (2731 views)
Tasted by mwgtespo on 5/28/2022: 5/28/22- steak dinner in Hamptons memorial day weekend . Tasted overdone. Not great (2379 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 5/18/2022 & rated 92 points: Drank in London
Much calmer than previous bottle, still have more time for maturity (2038 views)
Tasted by deverett on 3/22/2022 & rated 95 points: Lovely CdP here, had some good weight and concentration but didn't feel heavy to me. I do think some age has been kind in mellowing it out a little and this felt very in balance to me. Lots of brambly black fruits, dried herbs, pepper and smokey bacon. It is rich yet elegant and length to burn and enough stuffing and structure to age longer. Paired so well with a grilled rib eye. Top quality for me. (2220 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 9/25/2021: From Magnum, decanted several hours

This was originally intended to be a birthwine to last 21 years; keeping an eye on the notes below made me suspect it wouldn't make it to the finish line. Hence I decided to open it and repurpose it as a celebration of teenager-dom

N -spicy, cocoa, and a bit of heat. from some reason the nose reminds me of Christmas (perhaps a fruit cake?)
M - deep dark fruit, coffee, licorice. per the patriarch 'chewy, big and somewhat extracted'.

Frankly I found it tiresome, and I agree with BurgundyAl below, I see no upside to holding this.

While it was nice to sample this, I arrived at the same conclusion 5 years ago after tasting this same wine out of 750cc. Probably I should have sold it.

Though I must say, some of the Napa fans at the table were less disappointed than I. Perhaps as solace the patriarch added it was 'an absolute pleasure to drink'. Having said that the magnum went unfinished.

Unlike the score-whore I dont put a ton of stock in the critics. I must say that I agree that RP100 is wildly off the mark here (IMHO). (2915 views)
Tasted by Philip Yang on 4/2/2021 & rated 92 points: I bought this a decade a go and have been waiting patiently for it. Decanted for almost two hours. It is balanced and smooth, but didn’t wow me like many great Rhones before it. (3385 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 2/11/2021 & rated 95 points: There are great wines, then there are really great bottles of wines. This is the latter. We've been tracking this wine through other's reviews to determine when we should open. Bob's 65th birthday today seemed like a great time to open the 1st of three bottles that we brought back from Domaine du Pegau over 10 years ago. It's big, bold, powerful and all things wonderful. Went excellent with our grilled tomahawk ribeye and brown & wild rice mix. We could get into all the flavor nuances, but not tonight. (3354 views)

Tasted by King Julien on 11/1/2020 & rated 95 points: Decanted 4 hours. Not much nose either before or after decant, but palate was nice and smooth. (3576 views)
Tasted by Kim Gerner on 10/2/2020 & rated 90 points: CH9 semi blind vertical tasting of Pegau, Beaucastel and Salon 1990-2009 (Nordsjaelland): Almost youthful, very fruity with only a little farmyard note. However still, according to my taste, the balance is a little weak because of too much alcohol and too much body. Nevertheless still an excellent wine if you like that kind of wine, but a Score of 100 from WA is difficult to understand. (3284 views)
Tasted by jclary on 5/26/2020 & rated 96 points: Opened for Nadia's birthday celebration at our home. I have had this wine many times over the years, and always enjoyed it. At times, it seemed almost too big. Now, it is beginning to settle down, although still a huge wine. Ripe without being overripe. It was a beautiful compliment to the other two wines of the evening. Very close but I gave the Chimere and Sanctus Santorum a slight edge. Beautiful notes of strawberry and dark fruit with some spice. Popped and poured towards the end of dinner. (3510 views)

Tasted by sdr on 10/19/2019 & rated 90 points: Surprisingly, there wasn’t much energy in this example, some thought it was just too young and undeveloped. Less oaky than previously, decent balance and fruit, just lacking excitement. (4250 views)
Tasted by noppakit s. on 6/18/2019 & rated 99 points: “ From Double Magnum “

I keep wondering about when to drink this big format Da Capo until tonight 18.6.2019

Surprisingly delicious from the first minute after removing cork. Woww...

Fresh and lively, not heavy at all, we enjoyed drinking very much, round, smooth with hidden power reserved.

We also have magnum bottle of Champagne for drinking as a welcome and drinking with food.

Then 1996 Dom Perignon vs. 1996 Sir Winston Churchill tasting side by side, both are gorgeous.

What a wonderful evening !!

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/19/2019 & rated 89 points: High End Châteauneuf-du-Pape Dinner, Part 2 (Wear House): Single blind in 2007 flight. Very ripe, very mature black fruit with subtle sweet spice. Good balance, moderate structure. Disappointing given its reputation. doubt there is any upside. Not even close to the quality level of the amazing 2003 in the previous flight. (5450 views)
Tasted by Munch on 10/25/2017 & rated 98 points: Chateauneuf-Du Pape, The 2007 Vintage, A 10 Year Retrospective: This was wine number 16 of 18 wines in a 2007 CdP retrospective. All wines were doible decanted a few hours before tasting. Wonderful classic rustic Pegau nose of brambly red fruits, new saddle leather and spices and full bodied but not over extracted at all, great flavors of dark berries, licorice and black pepper and great, long finish. One of the more impressive wines in a stellar line-up of wines. This will likely drink well for 20 more years but great now. (8806 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 10/1/2017: This was a difficult night ! 07 Da Capo vs Janasse XXL ! We are absolut CdP nerds ! We love that stuff ! We like it big and we thought to have a similar palate like Mr. Parker .but ths was strange. Theses two boys are too big. Too much concentration. Not overripe but too dark . Not enough balance and definitly not enough fun. Chapeau to the vinemaker s job. But this was not my wine. Others may like it more. My first TN without rating. (7237 views)
Tasted by champussi on 9/30/2017: Parallel zu dem Janasse XXL 2007 getrunken. Beeindruckend!

(6776 views)
Tasted by sdr on 9/23/2017 & rated 93 points: Very interesting transformation. At first, fairly simple fruit, cherry, oak, tannin; tasty but not that interesting. Then over the course of the next couple of hours it developed additional layers of earth and garrigue, the fruit no longer up front. Surprising, at least to me, it’s not at all top heavy, roasted or sweet. Still, it’s questionable whether it’s worth the serious upcharge from the Cuvée Réservée. (6291 views)
Tasted by KenK on 5/22/2017 & rated 96 points: Late night, brief note. Massive dark rich creamy fruit with enough structure to keep this in great harmony. Really great and lived up to its hype. (6754 views)

Domaine du Pégau

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
