| Community Tasting Notes (average 89.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by PIntag on 7/21/2012 & rated 75 points: Super-ripe and port like bombastic styled Zin. Raisins and prunes with a big dose of alcohol. I had given this bottle to my brother 5 years ago for his birthday and we popped it at a family gathering. I did not enjoy it all all, but my brother and dad thought it was great, so there you go. I guess this style has some appeal to the broader market. (1883 views) | | Tasted by Pinot Joe on 5/23/2010 & rated 90 points: Big fruit on the nose. Body was heavier than most zins, great cherryon the mid palate and good spice on the finsih. Went well with tri-tip, would have liked to pair with some ribs. (2371 views) | | Tasted by tahaus on 11/18/2008 & rated 92 points: Big whalop of grape smacks you in the head like Mike Tyson in his prime before the ear biting incident! This could have the most packed grape and black raspberry flavors of any wine I've had in recent memory. Touches of black pepper, earth, and cedar chips arise on the finish but that big, juicy fruit just covers your entire tongue. This James Gang Reserve is 10 points better than his Ballistic Zin...in my opinion... (2400 views) | | Tasted by philhh on 6/26/2008 & rated 86 points: Fruit waning a bit, though still some cherry and raspberry. A little peppery, and as someone else mentioned a slight bitter taste on the finish. Not bad. (2613 views) | | Tasted by duckyfufu on 3/23/2008 & rated 91 points: A little more time in the closet did this wine a lot of good! Yum! (2784 views) | | Tasted by Paso Fan on 2/7/2008 & rated 92 points: Goes well with Houston's BBQ baby back ribs. Fruit forward, not much pepper, which offsets the ribs. (1740 views) | | Tasted by D.Callahan on 11/9/2007 & rated 84 points: Good fruit and a little heat in the nose both carry through to the pallate. Slight bitter taste comes through on the finish. Wife opened wine while I was gone so this tasting was 3 days later (wine was vacuum closed) which might account for the finish. (1830 views) | | Tasted by D.Callahan on 10/23/2007 & rated 89 points: Good fruit on the nose, very good fruit acid balance, a little warm but fruit handles it well. Medium long finish, overall very nice. (1896 views) | | Tasted by duckyfufu on 9/23/2007 & rated 89 points: Big, bold nose of black cherry and raspberry jam. Intense, chewy flavors of plums and other dark fruits, very rich, medium tannins. Slightly acidic, might mellow with a little more aging. Another fruit bomb from Tobin. (1793 views) | | Tasted by trekwars2000 on 7/12/2007 & rated 89 points: Tobin James Winery (Khoury's Fine Wine and Spirits - Henderson, NV): This wine was served in a generic wine tasting glass. The color on the wine is purple with a clear hue throughout. On the nose I get earth, pepper, tabacco and a touch of cassis. On the palate the wine offers plum, bing cheery and dried cranberries and is very well integrated and suprisingly subtle in character. This wine has a very smooth great finish.
This wine is excellent now, but with a little cellaring I think this could improve to the outstanding level (92+). This is a GREAT QRP at about $25 per bottle. (88-90) (2842 views) | | Tasted by lizjagla@yahoo.com on 6/21/2007 & rated 90 points: This is a great Zin at an even better price. A lot of spice and rich in flavor. This will only get better. | Tobin James Producer website
It all started with an extra six tons of grapes that a winery could not accept and process. Tobin (Toby) James, a lowly assistant winemaker at the time, asked the owner of the winery if he could have the grapes and make wine out of them for himself. The owner replied, "sure kid, knock yourself out". A year and a half later, gold medals began pouring in for Toby's first Zinfandel, the 1985 "Blue Moon" Zin. Tobin James Cellars, located 8 miles east of Paso Robles on Highway 46, sits among 71 acres of vineyard's and oak dotted hills. A magnificent setting for magnificent wines! As soon as you approach, you see something unique. The wooden structures, heralded by the rotating blades of a towering water pump, have a character all their own, There is even a restored stage coach stop that is now being used as a guest house that will take your breath away. It seems everything structural is relevant of age and history.Zinfandel ZAP: Zinfandel Advocates & Producers | Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wikipedia-ZinfandelUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Central Coasthttp://www.ccwinegrowers.org/links.html
