Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 95 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bg3034 on 4/6/2024 & rated 91 points: Dark purple, dark fruit - prunes, a little black licorice. Extremely balanced - drinking really well. Love it. 91 pts. Aloha! (51 views)
Tasted by costacasa on 12/8/2023 & rated 91 points: Has aged well. As others have noted, this wine is in a very good spot. Such an expressive wine with many layers. IMO this is better on its own than with food. A fun wine to discuss with friends. (163 views)
Tasted by Yohansmas on 10/31/2023:

(198 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 7/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Drinking very well right now. Lots of black and blue fruits in the nose and flavor with chocolate and just a hint of spice on the finish. Medium to full bodied, nice structure and acidity, well balanced and a long smooth finish. (268 views)
Tasted by PolarBear22 on 4/16/2023 & rated 91 points: Dark fruit including blueberry. Not quite tooth staining, but still dark and nice tannins. Great body and nice acidity. This is aging well. (308 views)
Tasted by jcha24 on 12/26/2020: PS is not my thing but this is in a nice spot. Still plenty of fruit so I don’t see a decline but the years have done this bottle well. (1246 views)
Tasted by JKIndy on 5/9/2020 & rated 92 points: Last bottle from vineyard visit. Aged beautifully. Long finish and full body. (1182 views)
Tasted by Amsonia424 on 4/5/2020: We are loving this! Big fruit, well integrated, smooth as all get out....you can and should drink this now...easy...great...definitely still good!! A Cindy buy from back in the day, last one/hold out...WELL worth it! (1201 views)
Tasted by PSirah Tampa on 2/19/2020 & rated 92 points: In a great place now. It only took 15 years...... (1219 views)
Tasted by David_T on 12/22/2019 & rated 90 points: Dark fruit, chocolate, fully integrated structural elements. An enjoyable mature PS and as others note drink now. (1221 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 11/20/2019 & rated 90 points: A Cinderella Wine Classic that comes out with a fantastic nose and a palate that goes impressively smooth, and still significantly fruity, after a half hour. Loved these, at price, but time to drink up. (1062 views)
Tasted by Seventy on 5/26/2019 & rated 89 points: Let it breathe and open up. Chocolate on the palate. Spice in the finish. Now seems to be a good time to drink it. (1121 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 10/27/2018 & rated 89 points: Auction purchase. Big, Black, rustic as hell. Like a vino nobile grew a second set. (1285 views)
Tasted by Quarked on 4/17/2018 & rated 91 points: Very smooth and full-bodied. Muted blackberry and shoe polish. Seems like a good time to drink, but certainly no rush. (1556 views)
Tasted by John O' on 3/31/2018: fantastico (1400 views)
Tasted by MLR on 2/13/2018 & rated 92 points: Still an intense Wine in the mouth and on the nose. Dark berries and firm tannins prevail. (1339 views)
Tasted by Grape_ape on 12/31/2017: still lots of life left, but palate has shifted and not quite my style these days. (1373 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 12/7/2017 & rated 91 points: Nice and round mouthfeel. If I want to be critical, it is hair hot. Otherwise, perfectly aged and solid structure and acidity. (1275 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 10/21/2017 & rated 90 points: Smooth. In a good place right now. Bottle #4 last night, so notes lacking. (1237 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 1/8/2017 & rated 91 points: Coravin and drank immediately. Nose was full of blackberry which continued on the palate along with blueberry and a present but not overbearing tannic bite on the back end. (1630 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 4/13/2016 & rated 91 points: Once again: I'd like to thank Wine Library, Cinderella, and The Demigod for badgering me into buying these. PnP. Better with age. (2196 views)
Tasted by Kentw on 11/29/2015 & rated 90 points: Very solid wine and cellaring has helped. Similar to last note in March. Strong acidity yet balanced to the palate. Went very well with lasagna. The ripe tomato meat sauce blended well with the full body, somewhat jammy and smooth blueberry and blackberry flavors at the outset with dark chocolate in the mid palate. 90+ (2276 views)
Tasted by costacasa on 5/16/2015 & rated 90 points: I had been holding on to this bottle for years, just waiting for the right time. Based on CT reviews, 2015 seemed to be THAT year. Decanted (significant sediment) and let sit for an hour. Medium nose. Generous dark fruit---blueberry jackpot, a little pepper. Good acidity---I think this would pair well with most dishes, but it doesn't need to be. Very enjoyable to drink. Wonderfully balanced, smooth. Not as chewy as some PS. Highly recommend. (2616 views)
Tasted by Adventr.us on 4/26/2015 & rated 90 points: This was just ok when I first popped it and had it 2 nights ago. I vacu-vinned the remaining two thirds of the bottle, and finished it off with a friend tonight. Much better. Jammy berry fruits up front, smooth through the finish, just a touch of tannins, but largely resolved. Very enjoyable -even with our New Mexican style chicken-hominy stew. (I'd read somewhere that Petite Sirah would go with Mexican food - and sure enough, it did just fine with the chili-tomato-mexican oregano driven spicing of the dish.)

Some previous reviewer's experiences had me wondering if I'd waited too long to pull this - but I'm thinking I'll give my final bottle another year. (2576 views)
Tasted by NoWineWiz on 4/19/2015 & rated 90 points: This opened up huge & inky, agreeing with RichardP, except that it did not make it past 2 hours. Maintained structure and intensity (big!) with fading tannins on the finish. (2169 views)

2005 Carver-Sutro Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard

"Petite Sirah is often compared to Syrah in taste and body. However, knowledgeable winemakers agree that the Syrah is an easier grape to grow than Petite Sirah. One of the challenges facing Petite Sirah growers is its "low vigor" and grapes that are about half the size of a Syrah." Petite Syrah, much like Zinfandel, is often considered America's Grape and has developed a loyal following on this side of the Atlantic."

"Our Petite Sirah is actually considered a Durif varietel named after the master grape breeder Durif in the late 19th century. He cross-bred Syrah and Peloursin to create a truly distinctive grape with saturated color and dense fruit, much like the Syrah from which it was derived."

VINEYARD
"Palisades Vineyard sits in a small riparian valley northeast of Calistoga in the northern end of the Napa Valley. It is bisected by an occasionally torrential Horns Creek, and is blessed with the kind of cobbley loam soil and very hot summers that are perfectly suited for growing for growing both Rhone and Bordeaux style wines."

"The tradition of grape growing at Palisades Vineyard dates to 1902 when Domenico Barberis, an immigrant from the small village of Murialdo in Genoa, Italy, came to California to find work and make a safe homestead for the family he did not yet have. Gilda Stella (whom Domenico had not met until she came to California at the urging of one of the other Barberis brothers) joined Domenico after he had secured work in the Calistoga mines. He had found the property that became Palisades Vineyard before Gilda arrived; together they planted it to its first vines soon after their wedding." -

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
