Tasted by Radboy on 4/25/2024 & rated 94 points: Terrific wine. Opens with honeyed apricots, orange marmalade and a hint of lime. Excellent balance with a dark, golden color the envy of winemakers everywhere. No need to wait any longer, it is time. (980 views)
Tasted by oenanthe on 3/23/2024 & rated 93 points: A deep coppery gold, like molasses. So much going on with the nose it is hard to know where to start. Apricot, honey, marmalade, smoke, charcoal, vanilla, caramel.... It's not as sweet as you might expect, nor as intense as the colour might suggest. Right in the zone, the acidity is holding up very well and this has a density that is without any sense of thickness. Totally delicious. Excellent with Rhubarb Pie! From a half. (1201 views)
Tasted by CellarBord on 2/9/2024 & rated 93 points: From Magnum. Apricot, less sweet style that I like. Mature with years of life left. From Magnum drink now to 2027. (1539 views)
Tasted by Andrewbdc on 12/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Medium copper. Beautiful pronounced and developed nose - dried apricot, orange marmelade, ginger, saffron, tobacco, caramel, vanilla, smoke. Sweet palate, medium+ acidity that helps retain freshness, palate very similar to the nose, long finish. Final bottle of three that have given much pleasure. There’s no hurry to drink this but it is fully developed and unlikely to develop significantly further. Personally I’d say drink now whilst it still retains its freshness. (1719 views)
Tasted by Rogier - TimoVino on 12/30/2023 & rated 93 points: Needed half an hour of air just to blow off some initial funkiness. Then it was layers walnuts, almonds, candied pears and bliss. (1634 views)
Tasted by Tao on 12/3/2023 & rated 95 points: Admiring the perfect honeyish colour, insanely beautiful, visually liquid gold! Rather deep and intense white fruits on the nose, slightly flowery! A little tight on the palate, rich stone fruits which are not fully opening yet, need to wait a bit or perhaps, let the air do the job. From half bottle! I thank the mother nature for creating such a charming beauty. (1907 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 11/4/2023 & rated 93 points: On the rich side but has a nice beam of acidity that livens up the palate and keeps it from becoming cloying. Lovely apricots on the nose. (2207 views)
Tasted by palfr2 on 9/9/2023: On the rich side but hey you cannot pick and choose which characteristics you want from the benchmark 2001 vintage. Beautiful amber color. Great tasting notes down-thread that pick the more obvious flavor descriptors (apricot, honey, orange). Sweetness can be off-putting when it is not matched by complexity. This wine is on the right side of that equation. Use cases are limited for sweeties but there is a lot of wine for the price with this Guiraud. (2176 views)
Tasted by gharter on 8/4/2023 & rated 94 points: Enjoyed with a peach dessert, a perfect match. Light caramel color. Gorgeous aroma showing honeysuckle, apricot, peach, and lemon. Similar flavors with apricot, peach, lemon and spices. Still has enough acidity to balance the sweetness. (2270 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 6/19/2023 & rated 91 points: Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion Tasting and Dinner (Winefield's Auctioneers, Amsterdam, NL): Sweet and rich and oaky, tropical fruit and honey, black tea on the finish. Lacks elegance. (3616 views)
Tasted by Lehto on 6/17/2023 & rated 91 points: After being bitten by The Riesling Bug™ and having had so many Auslese, BA, TBA and Eiswein at this point, Sauternes just doesn't speak to me the same way anymore - it's lacking that absolutely amazing acidity!

This was beautifully golden and ripe at this stage. Canned apricot, ripe pineapple, orange marmalade, mixed ripe tropicals and some grapefruit. Lots of honey and some ginger spice.
After a little over half a glass it starts getting cloying and my hunger for freshness and acidity starts to kick in. After the full glass I'm saturated with sweetness and can't take in anymore! (2349 views)
Tasted by FransS on 6/11/2023 & rated 89 points: Pre-sale tasting Winefields Auctioneers: A very ripe colour, lots of cinnanmon, nutmeg, wax, quite dry, lovely aftertaste. (1952 views)
Tasted by acorelli on 6/10/2023 & rated 91 points: Gorgeous orange/gold color. As the color was a bit darker than expected, the wine was a bit heavier than ideal. Delicious, though. (1859 views)
Tasted by cephomer on 5/11/2023 & rated 93 points: EM supplied for our CKH tasting. Fairly dark gold in color. Apricots and honey on the nose. There's pineapple, apricots, honey and some bitter orange here. Good acidic core, long finish. Enjoyable and drinking nicely (1888 views)
Tasted by ManhattanBeach on 4/29/2023: SFH cycling weekend; 4/29/2023-4/30/2023: With bread & butter pudding. More almond and pear than apricot and honey. (2114 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 4/11/2023 & rated 93 points: One of my ALL TIME favs from the super 2001 vintage...been sippin on this, sadly last bottle, for a week now...still showing brilliantly, yet age is catching up, like it is with all of us, I'm afraid! Showing more mothball stallness, and less vibrancy as it did in its youth...yet for me, plenty of pleasure with the sweet botrytis fruits of apricot, pineapple, grapefruit...more dried than fresh now...still killer saffron and creme brulee crust...candied orange, tobacco ash, ginger spice...still pretty sweet and oily...yet lifted with lemon/orange citrus squeeze...dried honey, sour bite of apricot marmalade...sappy sweet and savory burnt sugar finish...harmony...I guess more pleasure than I thought once I think about it! (2231 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 4/9/2023 & rated 91 points: Fairly dark orange/amber compared to the others; Heavy toasty notes with bitter orange peel/marmalade notes; less concentration on the palate than the Climens and Yquem. Hippo w/EWG 2001 wines
Blind 375ml 2001 Sauternes: Rieussec, YQyem, Climens, Guiraud (1924 views)
Tasted by Cremuel on 3/29/2023 & rated 90 points: Bob's cellar. Nice chestnut brown, bright & clear. Warm spices, burnt orange marmalade, fresh 'ozone' and peaches nose. Sweet balanced, with acidity, slight woodiness, and opens with a citrus edge. Nice, sweet with backbone, but it's no DYquem. Second night, nice and together. (1989 views)
Tasted by Shanta on 2/17/2023: Dark toffee colour, very developed. Massive nose of citrus preserves, vanilla, botrytis, some VA lift. Very rich unctuous palate, very full on but then finishes so cleanly. Some nice ‘bitter’ notes like almond kernels or apple pips add some bite to the otherwise sweetness. We beat as much of the Guiraud as we could into some whipped cream, served with grilled stone fruits (and a glass of the wine itself.) Try it! (1896 views)
Tasted by Border Boss on 1/15/2023: Medium gold. Fruity nose, tart acidity, moderate sweetness. Still young. The acidity calms down with air. Definitely not a pop-and-pour wine. (2101 views)
Tasted by North Willis on 12/3/2022 & rated 93 points: Striking burnt orange color, with necartarine and burnt orange peel mouth notes. Served super chilled after some 30 minutes in the freezer. I do like a hyper cold Sauternes. 375 ml. (2162 views)
Tasted by btock on 12/3/2022 & rated 92 points: Intensely flavored. Rich golden hue. This was served against a delicate clementine cake and that allowed the wine to really shine. Bit of beeswax and glycerin. A bit in the fridge leftover also showed well with a cheese plate the following evening. Quite nice now but given the intensity should be interesting for years to come. (2101 views)
Tasted by spineguy on 9/10/2022 & rated 96 points: Wonderfully balanced. Secondary phase. In a nice place now. Less unctuous then several years ago but more complex. (2351 views)
Tasted by penguinoid on 7/7/2022: 2022 TerClim Conference, Bordeaux; 7/4/2022-7/8/2022 (Bordeaux, France): Honey, barleysugar, orange marmalade. Cumquat. Touch of aged character. Pour was too small. (I guess this means I really liked it, trying to decipher my written notes some months later!) (1814 views)
Tasted by 1HMLindsay@Gmail.com on 5/4/2022 & rated 97 points: Bountiful and Flavorful
The sweetest of orange peels, infused with a silky cream of tantalizing fruits, which imbues smiles from the most discriminating palates. (3061 views)

Château Guiraud

Chateau Guiraud is one of the largest estates in Sauternes and makes a Premier Grand Cru Classé Sauternes. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries the 300-acre estate, which includes 210 acres of vineyards, was owned by a single family, the Guirauds, who earned the estate a reputation for outstanding wine. In 2006 the estate was purchased by four business partners who have continued to produce prestigious wines. Vineyards are planted with 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc, which is a notably high percentage of Sauvignon Blanc by the standards of the region. On average the vines are 30 years old. Nearly 10,000 bottles of Chateau Guiraud are produced annually. The estate also produces a dry white wine of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Château Guiraud recently earned organic farming certification, becoming the first of the Premiers Grands Crus Classés in the 1855 Bordeaux classification to do so. Winemaker Xavier Planty says the decision to adopt organic viticultural methods has helped shape the style of the property’s wines, putting greater emphasis on purity, intensity and elegance.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Le Grand Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac 1855 (Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac) - Read more about Sauternes, Barsac and its wines
– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
