Tasted by Mossrose on 4/8/2023 & rated 91 points: Enjoyable and still in good shape. Some bricking and lots of solids. Garrigue, very savory, decent acidity, and integrated tannins. If I had some left, I'd drink it soon. (667 views)
Tasted by john_s on 12/12/2022: Last bottle. Good cork. Some solids, needs decanting. Colour not looking particularly old. Quite savoury nose and palate, possibly around peak, dry good mouth feel. Nothing out of place. Enjoyable, despite slightly rubbery and slight harsh twist which some people would not notice. (775 views)
Tasted by booksmiths on 1/21/2022 & rated 91 points: A lovely CdP right at its peak.
Decanted for one hour. light sediment.
Was good the second night, but not quite as good.- (1247 views)
Tasted by Oyvoll on 12/25/2021 & rated 91 points: Yet another lovely bottle! (1224 views)
Tasted by Carib on 12/27/2020 & rated 89 points: Good reference point CdP from regionally well-regarded family growers. Mr. Quiot passed away some few years ago and the family now carries on. A local CdP dynasty. Large land holdings allows them to produce in quantities, so more of a family made mass produced product (!?). Cherries, meat, currants, roses; a more bitter finish on day 2 as the fruit fades, so best drink up on day 1. (1921 views)
Tasted by winebonanza1 on 5/29/2020 & rated 90 points: scent of dark cherries and meat. Plenty of acidity and tannins present. Dark fruit and forest. Would keep for another 5+ years. (1911 views)
Tasted by jmoore431 on 4/10/2020 & rated 90 points: Don’t recall ever drinking a wine from this producer before. Label says this has all of the permissible “Heinz 57 varietals” and comes off as classic CdP. Not getting any real funk which (to me, anyway) in modest amounts can give startling complexity to wines from this region. Very fresh and clean. 90+ (1951 views)
Tasted by elyaz on 2/18/2020: June 2015: Enjoyed with grilled porterhouse. Again, held up OK, but definitely on the softer side. Some (good) barnyard in the mouth.

July 2014: Enjoyed with grilled tri tip. Not aggressive, but stood up well. (1638 views)
Tasted by Friendless Drinkers Club on 6/6/2019 & rated 80 points: Dinner at Red Star; 6/6/2019-6/8/2019 (Red Star Seafood Restaurant): Seemed old and tired. Probably past its prime. Color was brownish and smelled almost corked and acidic (2377 views)
Tasted by bernow on 5/30/2019 & rated 90 points: Was still good and had a lot of cassis (1501 views)
Tasted by mrecknor on 1/23/2019 & rated 90 points: This is why we buy GSM and store it. We poured through an aerator into a pitcher, then let it set for 30 minutes, then back through the aerator into the bottle for serving. Wine was gentle (aged), and modestly tannic (as appropriate for a dinner wine) with abundant fruit.
We vacuum pumped the bottle, then refrigerated for the next day.
After letting it come back to room temperature we enjoyed a repeat experience with the second half. (1489 views)
Tasted by depechemoroder on 7/29/2018 & rated 91 points: Drinking perfectly now, though not showing tremendous maturity. Deceptively dusty and mushroomy nose when first opened, it seemed a bit tired so I didn't want to decant. Blossomed in the glass with an explosion of floral and liquorice scented cherry fruits. Creamy while retaining freshness, this goes down like velvet and and only shows hints of its savoury potential. I hestitate to say wait, as its so delicious, but with the acid and tannic structure, I do think this has the potential to improve if you like those secondary characteristics to star. (1932 views)
Tasted by john_s on 5/6/2018 & rated 90 points: A couple of years since I last tried it. Appearance hasn't changed much: mid, slight maturity, looks like it could be burgundy. Nose complex, some maturity, not over ripe. Palate is well balanced. A wine to sip slowly. Highish alcohol slightly noticeable but not a problem. Mouthfeel very attractive, still a bit tannic but that's part of the flavour profile. A touch of smoke. This is good, and I'm glad I have a few more. Should be served a bit cool (not lunch in the sun!) and not near a burgundy. (2092 views)
Tasted by bacchus on 2/3/2018 & rated 90 points: shared with pat at selkirk manor to celebrate the end of the work week. fully mature. garnet color. no browning or fading. jubilant cherry fruit.
tannin and acid resolved. successful blend. straight forward. drink up. (1908 views)
Tasted by markcic on 12/11/2017 & rated 89 points: A nice ten year old CDP. Red fruit on the nose, the palate was dark cherry, mushroom and mocha. The finish was of moderate length and full. (2429 views)
Tasted by pswe on 11/26/2017 & rated 89 points: This still drinks very well. Opened up gradually and has a very enjoyable long feeling right now. Probably not much more to gain from further ageing. (2202 views)
Tasted by Mossrose on 11/7/2017 & rated 94 points: Parker wrote that 2007 is the greatest vintage in the Rhone during his lifetime. This 10 year wine is a good instance of the truth in his opinion. Lush, rich, vivacious, and delicious. Tasted repeated side by side with diverse wines over 7 days, this Chateauneuf remained the finest wine on the table. Delightfully refreshing, enjoyable, caressing, and seamless. (92 views)
Tasted by RyansWinePicks on 9/21/2017 & rated 93 points: This wine was elegance in a glass. Rich harmonized red fruit with smoke and earthy notes on the nose. The palate was pure pleasure in a glass. Rich ripe red and black fruit, complexity with earthy, almost licorice notes and herbaceous qualities. It was just a full bodied rich velvety texture with a great finish. I highly recommend this wine. (1949 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 4/1/2017 & rated 90 points: As much as I dislike Jerome for disrespecting my friends and I when we visited, he is a pretty good winemaker.

This was very elegant. None of the over ripeness of the vintage. Light red. Beautiful light earthy red fruit nose. Delicious light raspberry flavours and nice dry finish. (3283 views)
Tasted by ccarter5181 on 8/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Drinking well now after 30 minute decant. Lots of sediment, had to decant carefully. Classic Rhone nose and flavours. Fairly rich and dark. Paired well with grilled lamb chops. (4867 views)
Tasted by Thellie on 11/29/2015 & rated 89 points: Decanted one hour and consumed at dinner with pork and lentil stew. Good pairing with food. Wine was in good shape, no bricking and dark color. Not tremendously aromatic but earthy, meaty nose, with consistent if straightforward flavor through the mid palate to a long if slightly hot finish. Solidly represents its vintage and terroir. (6470 views)
Tasted by monk1019 on 11/23/2015 & rated 91 points: Awesome after a 2 hour decant. Well worth the wait!! Raspberry, eucalyptus, mushroom and smoked meat made up the flavor profile. A long enduring finish. Only regret? Shared with 6 people. Wish I had another. Will have to wait for the 2010 (6235 views)
Tasted by DaveGCO on 9/19/2015 & rated 89 points: Served with grilled lamb chops. Slight Brick color. Let breath for about an hour.Excellent fruit, complementary nose of plum, pepper and hint of bacon? Fine unobtrusive tannins. All told enjoyable with or without food. (6338 views)
Tasted by john_s on 5/25/2015 & rated 89 points: Colour showing some age but not a lot.
Nose well rounded, savoury, some maturity but still generous fruit (grenache +).
Palate very good mouth filling and intensity. Some tannin at back. A year or two might diminish it, but it does add to the mouth feel. Although it has a reasonably high alcohol level (14.5% according to the label) the wine carries the alcohol well, so the impression is not hot.

5 days later: I've just drunk the second half of this bottle (i put half into a screw cap 375mL bottle for later) and I want to add that this is really very appealing. This wine is very active on the palate in a positive way. (5475 views)
Tasted by capacious on 4/12/2015 & rated 91 points: Surprised at how nice this was drinking. Maybe because we enjoyed it along with the return of Game of Thrones? No, it's a really good wine, complex, spices, mouth filling, interesting, went great with dark chocolate. There's a dinner for you. (4425 views)

Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The origin of the name Vieux Lazaret dates back to the 18th century when there existed in the centre of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape a hospice or Lazaret. This offered comfort and shelter for the poor and infirm, provided by the Lazarists, who were a silent order of monks founded in 1625 by St Vincent de Paul to look after the sick and the needy in the French countryside. They took the name Lazarists from the Priory of St Lazare in Paris, where the original order had been formed in 1632.

The Lazarists in Châteauneuf-du-Pape played a major role in taking in and looking after the sick during the terrible epidemic of the plague, which killed a third of the population in 1720. Subsequently the buildings fell into disuse and were sold by the Commune during the 19th century to the Quiot family and used as agricultural buildings. Being situated in the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and close to other properties owned by the Quiot family, these original buildings have today been extended and modernised, and now form the center of winemaking for Vignobles Famille Quiot. With this historical association going back over several centuries, the Quiot family decided in 1915 to give the name of Domaine du Vieux Lazaret to their principal Domaine.

Today, Domaine du Vieux Lazaret is exported to more than 43 countries around the world. It can be found on the best tables and regularly wins medals in wine competitions throughout the world. Florence and Jean Baptiste are the 13th generation to work at the estate.
Vineyards

The vineyards of Domaine du Vieux Lazaret are spread over 93 hectares (230 acres), split into 35 different parcels of vines throughout A.O.C. Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is today amongst the largest domaines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with 83 hectares (205 acres) planted in red grape varieties and 10 planted with white grapes. The number of parcels enables the Domaine to give greater complexity to its wines due to the diversity of soils, grape types and differing ages of vines.
Viticulture

The viticultural practices are strictly controlled and follow those traditions practised for many generations. The pruning is only done by those vineyard workers who are extremely experienced, and follow the strict rules of the appellation, with some vines trained on wires and others trained low to the ground. The soil in the vineyard is regularly worked to allow proper aeration, with regular application of compost, and other treatments to maintain the best organic level and condition of the soil. Harvesting of the grapes is done entirely by hand, with very strict selection of the best grapes to enhance the quality of the Domaine wine. The vines have an average age of 40 years.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
