Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 92 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by williamswhine on 11/7/2021 & rated 95 points: Absolute stunner. Large bottle with a lot of weight. Juice was spectacular-- enjoyed by everyone that was at the party. Dark, smooth, tempered spice, mellow. Terrific in every way and did not disappoint. (1563 views)
(1638 views)
Tasted by mactheknife on 1/31/2021 & rated 92 points: This wine has clearly entered its next phase. All flavors are secondary, with graphite, rosemary and other spice notes. The first day, it was good, but not great; 24 hours later, it was a beautiful example of an aged Merlot, very "right bank" in style. Really enjoyed. (1750 views)
Tasted by Dmjmd on 12/15/2020 & rated 91 points: Great forward fruit. Supple Tannins. Drink now as I don’t think it’s going to improve further and may be a bit past it’s prime (1794 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 9/21/2020 & rated 92 points: Deep garnet red. Dark nose coated in black cherries, tobacco and some volcanic earth. Medium tannins (6/10) with a medium to medium plus body. Well balanced acidity with cedar, cigar box, black plums, cherries and a bit of earthiness. Long finish. Drink now. (2218 views)
Tasted by juicejammer on 4/17/2020 & rated 91 points: Fruit was a bit muted upon opening but opened up nicely over the course of the evening. Has some nice layers and will continue to evolve but not sure it will improve with additional cellaring (1109 views)
Tasted by Pluecht on 1/5/2020 & rated 90 points: Quite tight. Opened up. Drink now. (1163 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 5/13/2018 & rated 90 points: Very similar to last time with prominent cherries throughout. (2100 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 2/9/2018 & rated 91 points: a light 30 minute decant today.

Light strawberry nose N6 - this initially seems to be thin then moderates and keeps a medium body. B6 t7

A distinctive light liquorice mint start and finish on the palate. (2084 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 2/8/2018 & rated 90 points: Fourth of our seven year vertical tonight....Scratch that the 2014 came out too.

Medium to deep ruby red. Notes of strawberries, bramble berries, anise and tobacco on the nose. Medium plus tannins (7/10) and medium plus body. Nice amount of cocoa, anise, black currants and woody. Drink till 2020. (1977 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 2/8/2018 & rated 92 points: Pahlmeyer Merlot Vertical Extraordianairre (at Home): PnP - lacks fruit compared to the 08 in nose but has a lightly woody nose.
More restrained than the 08 and rounded with more body.

N6 B7.5 T7 (2068 views)
Tasted by zenithon on 8/6/2017 & rated 93 points: Beautifuly balanced. Ready to drink. Had it with a medley of cheeses, meats, olives, apples and crackers. It paired wonderfully. A truly fantastic merlot. (2293 views)
Tasted by mactheknife on 3/19/2017 & rated 93 points: I was a little hesitant to open this bottle, since I usually read Cellar Tracker comments before opening. Sounded like to bottle was in an odd place. But I opened and poured a small glass. I would have to agree that it was a bit disjointed. So I let it sit for a day......what a difference! It was classic Pahlmeyer Merlot the next day. Beautiful and balanced. (2101 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 1/29/2017 & rated 87 points: Couple's Dinner (Jason's House): Decanted 1 hour, drank a small glass at a tasting over about 2 hours. The same as last time, the nose here is a treat while the palate is a challenging mess. The nose has bramble, red to black fruit and spice. The taste is initially acceptable, but the midpalate to finish is bitter and foul. This seems to get worse with time. Being the 2nd bottle that had this characteristic, I would not say it is a bottle issue, and I don't know of any fault this might be. The wine seems to get worse with time, and the nose began to take on the negative qualities of the palate. On the plus side, the alcohol remained in check on this bottle. (2220 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 1/8/2017 & rated 91 points: Dark purple red; sweet vanilla notes, light red berries behind; some pepper, licorice and tobacco, aftertaste of ripe plums; tasting well but somewhat disjointed in overall impression; quite good but some distorting factors to warrant a higher score (2099 views)
Tasted by JEP007 on 12/10/2016 & rated 93 points: From magnum. Lots of fruit, but rather one dimensional. Our group enjoyed it but no fireworks. Drink up. (2324 views)
Tasted by Didman on 11/15/2016 & rated 94 points: Pretty terrific Merlot. (1805 views)
Tasted by hackey37 on 9/18/2016 & rated 91 points: Opaque garnet color, dense color and slight haze. The smells are grapey, currants, brown sugar, with some blueberry, and stony notes. The tastes are blackberry, blueberry, spices, and currants. Tannins are dry and slightly furry, while the finish is sweet and long. (1718 views)
Tasted by markydecker on 8/21/2016 & rated 90 points: With a full 3.5 hour decant, very nice. Tannins mellow, fruit is there with some plummy earthy notes. Could have used a little more acidity, but decent balance. Not my preferred style but enjoyable nevertheless. Good drinking window right now, not sure it improves much from here. (1772 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 2/12/2016 & rated 92 points: Big in a mouth filling way, but not a fruit bomb as California merlot goes. We drank it over several hours with our meal and afterwards. I opened little by little even though we decanted it. It was never unpleasant, but neither did the fruit speak to us in anything but the most polite ways. It possessed a lovely bouquet and a deep rich reddish purple color in the glass. (2277 views)
Tasted by iawcc on 2/7/2016 & rated 92 points: Upon opening it was a bit restrained. Alcohol was overblown. 45min the fruit started showing up and after and hour is drank great. (2022 views)
Tasted by TSTEW22 on 1/9/2016 & rated 92 points: Classic merlot. Full bodied. Loads of subtle fruit. (2204 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 1/1/2016 & rated 84 points: New Years Even 2015 (Kevin and Vicki's): Decanted 1.5 hours. Drank a glass over about 3 hours, nursing it for signs of life. The nose is intoxicating, perfumed savory red fruit, cassis. In fact, when I smelled it in the decanter I thought we would be in for quite a treat. The palate is a big hot disgusting mess. Massive oak, lots of alcohol. There is some nice red fruit in there, but it's marred by oak and alcohol. It is quite disjointed. With time, the palate devolves to be even more acrid. (2450 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 12/31/2015: New Years Eve Celebration (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Vert dark/purple red color. Decanted for 90 minutes. Followed one glass for 90 minutes. This had a wonderful nose, unfortunately the disjointed palate made this tough to handle. Best to smell the lovely mix of cassis, blackberry, boysenberry, and cherry vanilla aromas than to try to maneuver around the daunting piles of oak and alcohol strewn in the way. Also a bit herbal on the palate. I'm not sure how to access this one, faded fruit on top of big oak and high alcohol and now unbalanced, OR in need of time to settle down - if I had to bet, I go with the former based on all the ravishing notes. Disappointing for sure. Score withheld, impression 85-86 given the benefit of the nose. (2446 views)
Tasted by Jeff U on 12/27/2015: Fabulous - sad it was my last bottle. (1526 views)

Pahlmeyer

Producer website

Jayson Pahlmeyer, recently joined by his daughter Cleo Pahlmeyer, have been producing highly sought-after, seductive, hedonistic wines since 1986. Pahlmeyer's flagship wine is the Proprietary Red, a Napa Valley Bordeaux blend. Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir round out this stunning portfolio. These wines are produced from exceptional mountain vineyards in the Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast, including the Pahlmeyer family’s Waters Ranch (Atlas Peak AVA) and Wayfarer Farm (Fort Ross/Seaview AVA). These vineyards, coupled with winemakers Kale Anderson and Bibiana Gonzalez Rave's passion and talent, turn out wines with power and finesse.

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
