Tasted by aof on 4/21/2024 & rated 94 points: Pretty typical HautBrion if a bit lacking in intensity and complexity compared to the better vintages. (752 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 3/30/2024: Ouvert pour souligner le 60e de mon frère Michel.
Excellent claret, encore jeune. Malheureusement pas pris de note, trop occupé! (1093 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 3/30/2024 & rated 94 points: Great wine, still young but showing well. Red and black fruits, still mainly primary. Lots of cedar and tobacco. Long and some complexity. Beginning to drink now but will be better in 10 years. (903 views)
Tasted by DonDon on 3/27/2024 & rated 94 points: Drunk at an incredible Haut Brion dinner alongside 1966, 1975, 1982, 1985, 1988, 1989 (corked sadly), 1995 and 1996. 82, 85 and 66 were WOTNs. The 2001 was also gorgeous and just starting its drinking window, but will be better with more time. Classic profile of sweet dark fruit, cedar and tabacco. Tannins present but very smooth already. Lovely stuff (1049 views)
Tasted by Marcel NZ on 3/24/2024 & rated 95 points: Dense dark red with no browning, black currant and savoury bouquet .
Intense concentrated black fruit with long palate , trace of green tannins but more than enough ripe fruit to compensate.
Drinking well now and for at least 10 years (1012 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 3/6/2024 & rated 95 points: Dinner with Paul and Jeff (The George Town Club - DC): Expressive nose with generous black fruit, crème de cassis, blackberry, tobacco, leather, dark caramel and mineral. Beautifully integrated palate, generous mature sweet black fruit, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long ripe black fruit driven finish. This is drinking really well. (1329 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 2/9/2024 & rated 97 points: Drank at 67
An absolute beauty (1107 views)
Tasted by GlassJe on 1/14/2024: First time tasting. Was wonderful right out of the bottle. We decided to not decant which I think was the smart choice. We were able to enjoy the flavors as the profile changed. If we had decanted I think it would have gone straight to the end too quickly. (1343 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 10/6/2023: First time with Haut Brion. Growing up in CA and being part of the wine scene as Pinot Noir exploded during that rise, I didn't often run with folks who were doing Bordeaux. So, I dig that Counselor Seiber dug this out of his cellar to share with us. Universally I think this may have been the WOTN at the table, too. There is a ferrous, iron quality to the wine, along with what Steve called tobacco. Plenty of stuffing too, yet elegant in tone with a cool mineral finish. As this sat out (I think Counselor opened and decanted this several hours before the dinner), it seemed to still tighten in the glass. A juicy, dark cherry with plenty of acid helping to support the structure. This is a marvelous wine, likely a long road ahead of it, and one I was lucky to taste alongside the group. (2499 views)
Tasted by VoteferPedro on 9/14/2023: 3 hour double decant
really complete and lovely wine (2066 views)
Tasted by GuanYu on 8/5/2023 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby red with orange rim. Blackcurrant, plum, dark cherry, cigar, smoke, and earthy. Medium-bodied, silky tannin. Wine was still youthful. I felt it needed another 20 years in cellar to reach its prime potential. (2316 views)
Tasted by A&C on 6/9/2023 & rated 93 points: This was still amazingly young with years left to go. It had a long finish. Telltale "Elephant" notes. Great fruit. A delicious treat enjoyed with good friends at the Edison House. (2467 views)
Tasted by VinhoVerde on 3/25/2023 & rated 90 points: Medium red with mahogany rim color. Fragrant tobacco bouquet. Modest fruit concentration and depth, the tannins are mostly resolved. Herb-like undertaste. Mature.

Tasted this at Mark’s yearly Bordeaux tasting. Sampled 12 vintages each of Château Haut Brion and Château Margaux. Great wines and comradeship, what an exceptional event to be part of!
Thanks to our host for his generosity in presenting a once in a lifetime Bordeaux tasting experience. (2816 views)
Tasted by Eric on 3/18/2023: Haut-Brion and Margaux courtesy of Mark Taylor; 3/18/2023-3/19/2023 (Atlanta, GA): Scorched earth, a touch oxidative at first but fills out nicely with air. Cherry fruit, firm and leafy, moving to tobacco.

My #6 and the group #5. Guessed as 2000. (3125 views)
Tasted by BordeauxBoy on 2/25/2023 & rated 95 points: Not the best vintage but a really great wine. Preferred to slow ox in the bottle for 3 hours and it was beautiful. I probably under rated it. Years left but not as ageable as the better vintages. (2229 views)
Tasted by 6831 on 1/2/2023 & rated 95 points: Dbl decanted. 5 hr. Graceful and polished with rich but restrained flavors of creme de cassis, blackberry, graphite, pipe tobacco, sweet oak. This wine is in complete harmony to for my palate. Outstanding (2497 views)
Tasted by NoahCap on 12/25/2022: My first Haut Brion. In fact, other than a very old OTH Latour, my first 1st Growth. Decanted 1 hr, enjoyed over 4 hrs, half the bottle refrigerated and consumed on day 2.

Gently aromatic, perfumed even, in way that I didn’t expect. You can smell that there is some age on this wine; leather, pipe tobacco, damp earth, black truffles, balanced with black cherries and plums. Medium bodied with fine gentle tannins.

Where the nose led with tertiary aromas, with the fruits in the background, the order is flipped in the mouth. Super smooth ripe cherries and blackberries, lead the way. Then come cedar wood, graphite, tobacco, wild mushrooms. The flavors are classic Bordeaux but the mouthfeel is smooth and gentle like a very nice aged red Burgundy; it’s a wonderful experience. Finish is long and very complex.

This is not a loud wine, it’s quiet and surprisingly subtle. For a wine so famous, well regarded, and expensive (!), I guess I expected something a bit more in-your-face. This is not that at all, which I like it all the better for. Reminds me of the first time I had a LdH Gran Reserva; surprisingly light and subtle, which is my preference.

This is not a 100 year wine, like I’ve heard some of the top Bordeaux can be. It’s already showing its age. It was still very good on day 2, but not definitively better. To my palate, it’s in the perfect place. (2159 views)
Tasted by Malarky997 on 12/24/2022 & rated 94 points: Great finish (1634 views)
Tasted by hargy on 12/23/2022 & rated 92 points: still lovely (1722 views)
Tasted by skurtz on 12/15/2022 & rated 94 points: This has grown on me over the years. Tonight decanted for 2 h, it has a classy elegance about it I’ve not appreciated in previous bottles. Complex oak, sandalwood, tobacco leaf, and many more subtle notes in the nose. The palate eases into a red fruit profile, with earthy oaky mid palate, lively acidity, and a long smooth finish. There is a lot going on here, great complexity almost too understated to be a wow. But close. Hard to believe this is 21 years old, very clean and fresh. (1867 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 11/20/2022 & rated 97 points: Beautiful and luxurious bouquet with dark berries, cedar and cigar box. On the palate soft dark berries, cedar, leather, tobacco, chocolate, red berries, soft tannin. This bottle performed better than my expectations. Fully mature, luxurious and silky soft. Just great!  Tasted by Zinlady on 11/6/2022 & rated 94 points: Wonderful last night with seven hour lamb Dark cedary tar. Great nose Tasted blind. WOTN. (1565 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 9/7/2022 & rated 92 points: Surprisingly approachable now. Typically Haut Brion on the nose with red cedar and cigar box spice. Not as much extraction as ’00 but still round palate. 92-93. (2194 views)

Rockss and Fruit (3/20/2007)
(Chateau Haut Brion) More fruit on the nose than the '02. Seems to be in an early drinking style with cassis and cherry fruit on the nose. Extremely forward and lush on the palate with high acid and a trace of heat. Good Haut Brion but the least favorite of the first flight.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
