Tasted by funderwood10 on 5/10/2023 & rated 90 points: Batard closing month dinner. Paired w 4 French cheeses, epoisses being the absolute highlight.

Tasted like Heavily salted honey covered almond/walnuts. W the epoisses, accentuates nuttiness of both in a spectacular way that brings forward a new extremely clean toasty nut flavor absent when tasted separately. Might be the most interesting pairing I’ve experienced. (405 views)
Tasted by yodamark on 3/2/2021 & rated 98 points: I have always loved old Filhot from great vintages. its a little underrated compared to Climens and Dqyuem from time to time. this 83 from my cellar was in great condition, wonder full golden orange consistent with age. It was given wine of the night by a few punters and it was certainly well up there for me. it bounced out of the glass with honeyed apricots, oranges and marmalade. but the true magic trick was the underlying structural acid and body that meant it was not over ripe, over the hill or cloying. it was fresh bright rich and sweet and matched perfectly with Creme Brulee and Cheese platter. an absolute stunner and a bargain at the auction scenes if you can find good bottles.
And like the 80 Dyquem from the last soiree i managed to squirrel some to take home but this time i held onto the bottle to ensure certain family members didn't get a straw and consume the rest. so i had a little sip in the back seat of the Uber but handed the bottle to the others to assist in getting my seat belt on. which once achieved i realised was a total ruse by the Timmy two shoes and Mark w to distract me. i took possession of the bottle back again and as typical and fully expected it was empty. So i exited the Uber at Timmys and threw the bottle into Timmy garden in protest. I wish certain pruning opportunities of the family tree were available from time to time (1598 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 8/9/2020 & rated 92 points: Barley sugar colour, barley sugar nose, barley sugar flavour. Fully mature Sauternes, folding well but no further upside. Excellent. (1613 views)
Tasted by Doblk on 11/3/2019 & rated 92 points: Still drinking very well. Great with triple créme and pears. (1806 views)
Bel effort toutefois. (2004 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 1/1/2019 & rated 92 points: Superb mature Sauternes with botrytis, barley sugar and orange marmalade on the nose. Sweet wine with barley sugar flavours, great power and length. Excellent. (1948 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 12/23/2017 & rated 90 points: Golden orange colour. Quiet nose, a touch of barley sugar that’s all. Better flavour. Eaten some of its sugar, this is a Sauternes for a cheese like Comte, which is what we had it with. Flavour of apricots, a bit simple but rich. Decent old Sauternes. (1451 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 7/1/2016: Fresh and vibrant with tinned peach, apricot, honey and lavender notes. In the mouth it is clean and bright with a nice line of lemon-like acidity. (2234 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 5/6/2016: In great nick with a fresh nose of citrus blossom, honey, mandarin peel and lavender. It is sweet, full and rich but cleans up beautifully at the end, finishing clean, dry and minerally. (2120 views)
Tasted by EirikM on 7/14/2014 & rated 87 points: Well balanced and enjoyable. Showing marzipan, apricot and orange (marmalade). Fairly refreshing, although the fruit was probably never really first class here to begin with and that shows somewhat after 31 years. It really picked up when the blue cheese came on the table though. (2677 views)
Tasted by burrac on 12/26/2013 & rated 88 points: Half bottle, auction buy, very high shoulder, tricky cork, with an extended opening sequence inspired if not aided by the Durand.

Strikingly mute on the nose. More interest on the palate, balanced like a good Sauternes, but quite thin and short.

Having just read aagrawal's recent note (whose notes I always read with interest), I suspect that this bottle was a bit tired, although it was not flawed in any way. I have one more bottle (alas same lot), and will check it out soon. (3181 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 12/24/2013 & rated 92 points: 1983 vs. 1986 Sauternes Blind Tasting (Menlo Park, CA): Tasted blind. Darker golden orange than the others; mineral, caramel, more advanced but still somewhat complex; palate is dense, sweet, youthful, decent complexity. Slightly odd on the nose but otherwise very nice including a balanced palate. I liked this far more than others and guessed it was the Suduiraut or Guiraud. 92 (3173 views)
(2302 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 9/27/2012 & rated 86 points: 29th Birthday Chateauneuf du Pape Tasting (Weygandt Wines - Washington, D.C.): What a cool and nerdy wine. The cork was a bitch to get out, but we managed to decant it get it some air. It's the color of apricot and cherry juice in the glass. Initially reticent aromas, but opened up a bit to show apricot, lemon oil and marmalade. Packed with rich flavors and an oily mouthfeel. Flavors of fresh honey, applesauce and lamp oil. The acid is too low for me, making the wine feel a bit flat on the palate. Still, it was a fun drinking experience. Thanks, J! (3913 views)
Tasted by sharonandroland on 11/28/2010 & rated 92 points: Intense orange transforming into menthol and then eucalyptus. Nice length. (3047 views)
Tasted by xwine on 3/6/2010: No notes taken, this was a nicely balanced wine, not at all cloying, and really showing well for a "Deuxième Cru" of 23 years. (2278 views)
Tasted by Fragrant Farmer on 2/18/2009 & rated 90 points: Bought 1986. Now drinking to perfection. Sweetness has dropped off and everything is in perfect balance. Lots of lovely botrytis. Wonderful. (2083 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 5/4/1991 & rated 87 points: With K, Miranda, Rich, Gail, Bryan and Mary and Garth at "going away" dinner for R, G, and B (with cheesecake). Brilliant shot-gold color. Clear and bright. Nose almost entirely closed. Very tight. Penetrating sweetness on the palate. Light as a feather, too. Very fine, delicate wine. Excellent. Fine to drink now. Great balance and structure. 5-9-16-7: 87/100. (187 views)

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
