Tasted by 1961Vintage on 3/11/2022 & rated 92 points: Nice bottle age, in a very good place right now. (736 views)
Tasted by pepmi on 12/26/2020 & rated 88 points: We opened this 2007 Rudius Syrah, following the 2015 Julien Cecillon St. Joseph Babylone we had over dinner. Eight years and a world of difference. I can't remember the last time I had back to back Syrah in one evening; perhaps never.

Out of the decanter, the darkest of brown immersed in a sea of deep red. A powerful nose of anise, licorice, herbal aromatics and eucalyptus. Sadly, the taste is far less complex.

In the mouth, a tug of war is waged between the forces of balance and subtlety against raw dark fruit flavors. In search of integration, one only finds opposition. Sadly, the finish ends rather abruptly. On reflection, the nose may offer you the most pleasing experience. (1413 views)
Tasted by acidqueen on 12/10/2020 & rated 88 points: Rich, deep ruby. Light black pepper and good red berry fruit. Sufficient acid to keep it interesting although the ripeness is a bit too much. The age is just right for drinking now. No need to wait longer. Enjoyable but not great. (1153 views)
Tasted by Doc90 on 6/17/2020 & rated 92 points: Complex nose of tile, blueberries, and zabaglione. This is an expansive wine. Excellent acidity. Notes of Maine blueberries, red zinger tea. One of the better wines I've had from Rudius. Now is a good time to drink this. (1299 views)
Tasted by ZachF88 on 5/2/2018 & rated 92 points: Drinking beautifully right now. Decanted for 90 mins and then drank over the next 45 mins. Dark and blue Fruit has taken a slight back seat to the bacon fat/ cured meat. Slight white pepper, barnyard, and flint. Very good and I wish I had more. Reminds me a lot of Northern Rhone on a warmer vintage. Great juice! (2273 views)
Tasted by Grape_ape on 11/30/2017: Good, but drank a bit bigger/warmer climate than I recall the last bottle. lot of bacon fat, blue and black fruit. (2052 views)
Tasted by thalver on 9/23/2017: Meh..not as good a showing as a bottle two years ago. Some cool climate flavors and aromas, but one had to search for the flavor. Lackluster at best, and that from someone that really likes the Rudius cabs and chards (1794 views)
Tasted by ilcalmo on 8/11/2017 & rated 91 points: Shockingly good. This is my style of syrah. It's very stylistically similar to a Northern Rhone, with just a little more sunshine to the fruit to tell you where it's from. This is very nicely made and nicely balanced, with classic Rhone flavors of herbs, olive, and savory funk, all with nice black fruit. (2178 views)
Tasted by silton on 3/17/2017 & rated 88 points: A savory disappointment, acidic and chunky over the course of a Friday evening. Olive, eggplant, green peppercorn and iodine aromas promise more than they deliver. Sat. afternoon I had a 2014 St. Jospeh and a 2013 Cote Rotie at a tasting that blew this out of the water for equal or less money. I actually think this needs more time... either that or the winemaking didn't fit the raw material and would have been better younger than now. Stored in my cabinet since being bought direct. (2173 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 1/1/2017 & rated 92 points: Dramatic transformation from my last bottle (if representative). Still very dark in the glass. Great nose of meat, white pepper, strong olive note, and a bit of smoke. Palate has a lush, dark, Cali style ripeness to it, but a nice citrus element that keep it fresh. Moderate fruit and smoke finish. A very nicely done, balanced Cali syrah. I can not explain my last bottle experience almost 5yrs ago--this exceeded expectations and has clearly aged well. Went great with burgers. (1768 views)
Tasted by Meerlust on 12/25/2016 & rated 91 points: Moderate purple color with ruby rim. The nose was incredibly expressive with ample olive and lavender notes coupled with plum. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine was unmistakably syrah with plum, dark cherry, olive, lavender, and mineral flavors. There was excellent acidity to balance out the fruit and some tannic grip was present. Overall, this wine continues to improve, and this bottle really highlights how lovely the olive, floral, and mineral profile of syrah can be. It was quite lovely with tapas. (1399 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 9/23/2016 & rated 91 points: Actually was better than I expected. Nose was full of earth, olive, meaty tones. Good core of dark & red fruit. Air showed a touch of prickly heat on the finish, but didn't detract much from an overall impressive wine. (1733 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 9/23/2016 & rated 92 points: Friday Afternoon at Domaine (Domaine Wine Storage): A really attractive and full nose has creamy black fruit, stems, florals, bacon and olive. Very Northern Rhone in flavor profile. The fruit is moderately rich and provides a lush medium-to-full body. This is in a great drinking window with fruit pleasure and complex flavors. (2043 views)
Tasted by eeeeeradicator on 4/24/2016 & rated 92 points: This is still drinking young. Deep garnet in color, pine, chalk, tar, and camp fire on the nose, very mouth-coating and full-bodied. Fabulous with roasted leg of lamb. Will wait another 2 years before opening my last bottle. (1737 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 1/9/2016 & rated 85 points: My 2nd and last bottle, purchased on release from the winery. Pop and pour, but saved some for the next day. I felt this was quite advanced, fragile, and falling apart. I got some distinctive "Rudius" flavor in there, just elderly. I'm not sure if this style ages well. Furthermore, this bottle, at $50, was quite a dissapointment. (1854 views)
Tasted by thalver on 11/20/2015: Very syrah, maybe even a bit Northern rhone on the palate upon opening. Enough acididty and tannin to suggest it should go a good bit longer (1707 views)
Tasted by jcha24 on 9/25/2015: Full resolved and ready to drink. Delicious stuff (2051 views)
Tasted by jcha24 on 9/25/2015: Fully resolved and ready drink. Tasty stuff. (1981 views)
Tasted by Screameagle on 9/14/2015 & rated 88 points: A short decant was not enough. A decent wine but nothing to write home about. I opened this bottle as a tribute to Jeff who had to vacate his house today due to a wild fire. Hope and and his family and vineyard are all OK. (1788 views)
Tasted by budman on 9/10/2015: Lots of tannin, but not much fruit at this point. (1486 views)
Tasted by Meerlust on 3/22/2015 & rated 90 points: Dark purple center with violet rim. The nose is still youthful providing plum and dark cherry with meaty notes and lavender. On the palate, the fruit intensity is there with roasted meat, lavender, minerals, and an interesting wintergreen note. There is good acidity in this medium-bodied wine, and the tannins are still a little aggressive. Overall, this bottled seemed better integrated than the last, and the palate is quite unique. It seems to have more time and is on the upswing. (1660 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 3/15/2015 & rated 89 points: Decanted 1 hour and consumed over 2 days. This wine seems to be all about the fruit and cocoa. It seems to lack acid or balance, but it is not a fruit bomb either. At this stage, instead of being well-rounded and mature, it is a fruit-forward wine that is getting old and fading away. I don't get any secondary or tertiary characteristics, just red to black fruit and chocolate, plush but muted. Although a good wine, I do hope for more at this price point. (1630 views)
Tasted by budman on 1/26/2015: Much better than the last bottle... good news!!! (1683 views)
Tasted by caeleric on 9/22/2014: pnp, consumed one glass on day 1, 2 glasses on day 2, and the rest of the bottle on day 3. day 3 was the best of the bunch, but this particular bottle showed more "tired" than my last couple bottles. still has life left, but for my palate i prefer lots of fruit so i won't be waiting on my last bottle. (2067 views)
Tasted by Meerlust on 8/17/2014 & rated 89 points: Purple center with violet rim. The nose is a blend of plum, lavender, and pepper. On the palate, there is ample plum, lavender, pepper, and mineral accents. The acidity matches the fruit, but the tannins in this medium-bodied wine are still a touch raspy. The finish has solid length with plums, pepper, and minerals. Overall, this is a wine that demands food. When paired with whole wheat pasta, roasted tomatoes, basil, and feta, this wine's tannins softened a bit while the pepper and fruit accented the food. (1985 views)

Rudius

Producer website

Rudius is the ancient Roman word for a wooden sword that was used by soldiers and gladiators during their training. Traditionally, a rudius was given to gladiators when they had won their freedom from the arena. Winemaker Jeff Ames views his own project as freedom to pursue his style of winemaking, after working on other labels over the past years. Ames focuses on Grenache and Syrah from Russian River. Production is under 200 cases each.

2007 Rudius Syrah Emerald Pool Alder Springs Vineyard

Producer notes: On the nose, you immediately sense the floral lift from the Viognier component. There are lilacs and honeysuckle as well as spice, roasted meats, leather, earth and a bit of road tar. When you first take a sip you get a touch of meats again, along with black truffles, menthol, iron and cherries. The weight is more mid/full than heavy, with full tannins side-to-side and front-to-back. The flavors carry all the way through to a finish of boysenberries, cloves and some sweet mint. For once, I do think that a wine of mine is best right out of the bottle. This seems to show its best either right out of the bottle or after AT LEAST 30 hours in a decanter. As I write these notes, I am drinking the wine without decanting. Although this wine will have been in bottle for almost 18 months when shipped, it is clearly capable of many more years of development in bottle. Price: $45.00. Alcohol: 13.8%, pH: 3.8, Production: 130 cases, Released: Feb. 17, 2010.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
