Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wabi47 on 2/10/2016 & rated 90 points: ABV15; deep dark berry and spice hides any hint of alcohol on day one; softer fruit with good acidity and a hint of heat on day three; ravenswood is one of the few high ABV/big Zins that can age gracefully in my opinion (1137 views)
Tasted by Cag4 on 11/4/2015 & rated 93 points: So nice to find a great wine, drinking at its peak, that is really reasonably priced. To correct my previous tasting note: found this at Ralph's in San Diego (not Von's) and it was $17.99 (not $17.49) with the six pack discount. Phenomenal QPR. (1353 views)
Tasted by Cag4 on 11/1/2015 & rated 93 points: This is a real treat -- found it on Halloween at my local Von's for $17.49 for the 2007. Even if it wasn't a bargain, it's a delicious single vineyard zin from Ravenswood. Drinking great right now. (1372 views)
Tasted by ecola on 10/27/2012 & rated 92 points: Aromas and flavors of blackberry, blueberry, and tea really jump from the glass. Well balanced acidity and minerality make this a wonderful food wine. Soft tannins. (2319 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 10/3/2012 & rated 87 points: A nose of dark cherries and spice, dark purple in color. A full bodied single vineyard Zin, with blackberry, black cherries, plum, and spice on finish, a bit disjointed. (2353 views)
Tasted by RandomCoil on 5/13/2012 & rated 86 points: This was a bit of a disappointment after the last bottle I had last year. The fruit seems to have completely faded, leaving behind only the oak and spice. Maybe it's past it's prime, but that seems unlikely given Joel's tendency to make big, bold zins that age well. Maybe this bottle was just a bit off. At this price, I hope so. (1660 views)
Tasted by Guyc on 10/3/2011 & rated 86 points: First bottle I bought and knew it would be great and just didn't live up to it. Perhaps I am now spoilt after finding Macchia or perhaps I was just not paying attention. Anyhow, nice bottle of wine, pretty light viscosity, definite pepper notes but more a Pinot than a Zin I that makes any sense at all !

Good but like Pulp Fiction.... The hype didn't meet the reality and of course just like wine it's alot about personal taste. Sorry Ravenswood, love you bit this didn't stack up. (1950 views)
Tasted by ecola on 10/2/2011 & rated 93 points: Interesting aromas of dry red fruit and garden herbs, while still retaining a little bit of that typical zin nose. A very big wine with restraint. Flavors of black tea, a little blackberry, and cooking spice. Dry and tannic on the finish with minerality coming out. This either needs food or is really young. I think this is zin on another level. Filled with structure, restraint, and secondary flavors. I have never tasted a zin like this. I like the jammy style, but this is complex. (1906 views)
Tasted by Haggis on 8/3/2011 & rated 87 points: Jammy, fleshy, tannic (not overly tannic, but enough to stitch things together), and a tad green. Nothing particularly noteworthy, nor anything offensive. (1240 views)
Tasted by MotoMannequin on 5/26/2011: This initially had a reticent nose, some subtle cranberry on the palate and finishing with bitter green tannins. With air, the fruit starts to flesh out, turning to boysenberry and candied flowers, but the bitter greens are always there on the finish. (1269 views)
Tasted by Msjp100 on 3/19/2011 & rated 89 points: Was better the second day...needed to be decanted the night before. Gaminess on the nose a bit jammy with blackberry notes. Went well with chocolate.

Tasted by RandomCoil on 3/5/2011 & rated 90 points: Jammy, dark fruit, and oak. A little spicy. Stiff tannins indicate it could probably use more time in the bottle. (1261 views)
Tasted by ed-d on 5/21/2010 & rated 88 points: Smoky & meaty on the nose with good red & black raspberry peeking through. Very structured & tight on the palate. A bit light. (1474 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
