Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 46 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by spi77ff on 2/10/2024: Wonderful. Opened up nicely over the course of an hour with a nice steak. (156 views)
Tasted by drmarc61 on 7/29/2023 & rated 94 points: My last bottle surprised me. The primary, secondary, and tertiary notes were beautifully blended. The tobacco box, burnt cherry, loam notes sung to me on the initial taste. I am now enjoying quartz notes with burnt cherry, violet notes with tobacco box and loam three hours later. I wish I started the three pack now.. (492 views)
Tasted by JackCMac on 5/14/2022 & rated 94 points: Mellow cab with lingering finish. Decanted for one hour. Had with NY steak. Memorable Cab. (1165 views)
Tasted by drmarc61 on 2/4/2022 & rated 92 points: A difficult year genuinely challenges wine makers to create a work of beauty with lesser components. This wine in this year is quite unlike most years. This wine lacks the nuances that most years that I have tasted have. That being said, after 11 years, this wine is in window in which it is unlikely to improve. I gave it a solid two hour decant. The initial taste on the palette was of prunes and cigar box. The tannins were still present, but had smoothed out a lot since the last bottle. Some subtle spice notes emerged, along with some loam and mushroom notes. (1295 views)
Tasted by Barakahn on 4/24/2021 & rated 92 points: Don't PNP this one. Minimum 40 minute decant (1834 views)
Tasted by bunkie on 11/7/2020 & rated 83 points: Biden is president elect (1888 views)
Tasted by Barakahn on 5/31/2020 & rated 93 points: don't be fooled by the vintage...this is mountain fruit and is drinking well now. (2166 views)
Tasted by pvewino on 3/7/2020 & rated 93 points: Obviously a very good wine. Still takes at least an hour to open up. Cherry is the dominant flavor to me. I still think the wine is overpriced for this particular vintage. Go ahead and drink them now. Not convinced it will get any better with a few more years. (1663 views)
Tasted by theodore3 on 3/27/2019 & rated 93 points: Wow. Supposedly it gets better than this but hard to believe. Perfect tannins. Great fruit. Wonderful with wild ducks. (2262 views)
Tasted by bubbachumps on 9/21/2018 & rated 91 points: Notes of bell pepper, dark fruits and some close on the nose. In the mouth, good extraction and nicely balanced. This was a tasty effort but no where near what this wine can do in good vintages. (2271 views)
Tasted by mgstull on 8/13/2018 & rated 93 points: Another data point indicating that 2011s from top cuvées are drinking nicely. After 1 hour decant, shows dark cherry, currant, a bit of tart raspberry, minerality, and a backbone of charcoal. Mid finish. On the powerful side of elegant. (1848 views)
Tasted by drmarc61 on 6/10/2018 & rated 92 points: Wine started off too astringent and burning alcohol. Decanted, aerated for 30 minutes and sat in open glasses for another 30 minutes. The wine mellowed out to a point where I was surprised by how light it became. Very nice red and dark berries, mixed with nice cedar and white chocolate notes. (1737 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 4/10/2018: Amber's. Has put on some weight in the past year, though it is still an '11 and lacks the density of riper vintages (for me, that's a plus). Quite good. (1680 views)
Tasted by Tom Myers on 9/8/2017 & rated 92 points: Give it an hour in a decanter before drinking (1759 views)
Tasted by BornToRhone on 3/3/2017 & rated 90 points: 750ml; PnP; Lighter in fruit than other vintages, nice wine but a bit thin for a Napa cab. Decent drink but I think other vintages would be the ones to hold. Drink now with couple hour decant. (2052 views)
Tasted by pvewino on 1/22/2017 & rated 91 points: Overall a good wine, but probably not worth the price. If drinking this one anytime soon, be sure to give it at least two hours to open up. I drank this after pouring through a vinturi aeration over the course of a few hours. Definitely got better as the night went along. Started on the "vegetal" side and transitioned into the cedar, chocolate and cherry. I agree that this certainly isn't the best Pritchard Hill vintage. (1829 views)
Tasted by mntebolt on 11/11/2016 & rated 85 points: good (1884 views)
Tasted by Coachron13 on 7/27/2016 & rated 90 points: Not big and bold like their typical Pritchard Hill cab, but pretty solid for a 2011. A lot milder than the other vintages, but they did a good job providing a solid cab given the issues with the weather that year. (2036 views)
Tasted by jaxpaj on 3/18/2016 & rated 90 points: Off year. There was a bite to the wine. (2494 views)
Tasted by Larkin on 11/7/2015 & rated 92 points: After a brief decanting, went nicely with Grilled Salmon, sauteed broccoli & marinara! (2016 views)
Tasted by Mrp2008 on 7/11/2015 & rated 92 points: Not your typical early drinking 2011 Napa Cabs. Give it a few years. 92 (2168 views)
Tasted by km5 on 2/15/2015: With steak (2316 views)
Tasted by JPH104 on 10/20/2014: Expressive dark fruit and secondary green and earthy notes. Good length and grip. Still very young. Good bottle, though hard to justify the price. (2298 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
