Tasted by thwacker on 5/18/2024 & rated 99 points: If not perfection, the closest thing to it. Still dark purple with tawny bricking at the rims. Very expressive bouquet leaps from the glass. Notes of ripe plums, blackberries, cedar, saddle leather and accets of mint and thyme. Did i get some orange peel? Yes! Very complex with different snents every time i lifted the glass. That complex olifactory assault would have been enough, but the flavor was something else -- good balance but the mouth caressing smoothness was unbelievable, soft, velvet tannins caressing every sensory receptors the wine contacted, long finish that went on forever, A tour de force i could drink forever, but alas, my last bottle! Enjoyed with a veggie cassoulet. Perfect! (213 views)
Tasted by prism on 5/4/2024 & rated 93 points: Slow O'd for a hour. Served at a party; drank the remainder the next evening. An excellent C9P, though it did take a while for the brett to blow off. Well made; could probably improve with a couple more years sideways. Drink or hold. (474 views)
Tasted by Tomportwine on 3/19/2024 & rated 95 points: 14 yrs old vintage at this point. Opened 4+ hrs before dinner, decanted 2 hrs before dinner. At start of dinner, it was perfect, smooth, with dark red and prune fruit, earth, mineral, balanced with medium acidity and wonderful elegant chalky dusty tannins. After 2 more hours, the fruit continued to emerge, to add a lustful element. (1643 views)
Tasted by Fugu Me on 3/4/2024: PnP, consumed over three nights. This took a couple of hours to really open up, then held straight and steady through the three days it was open, so clearly lots of life ahead, with plenty of room to continue to improve, which is saying something, as it’s already really, really good. My first of four bottles, wishing I had more cellared. (1639 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 3/3/2024 & rated 94 points: PNP in a hotel restaurant, then followed back up in the room for another 2 hours. This is SUCH a savory wine! So much easier to pick out the anise, spice, stones, florals, meat/leather, and kelp than to decide which fruits are hiding in there. Yeah, there's cherry, raspberry and plum notes raising their hands for attention. And the texture is great, and the length is, well, long...
The structure is there, mid life, now-2035. (1544 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 3/2/2024: Wow, this opens up with a nose of stones, flowers, earth, dark cherry fruit. Beautiful, understated palate with marks of cherries, stone, lavender and thyme, liquid spices from Provence in a glass. Complete wine, balance and harmony, grand vin indeed. First bottle from a case of twelve. Chez Finn and Pernille. (1568 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 2/11/2024 & rated 97 points: WOW delicious nose of salty red cherries, bacon fat, loads of minerality, cèpes de Bordeaux… Very delicious, loads of mineral, salty cherries, lenght of 30 sec, still 10-15 years potential ahead! (1740 views)
Tasted by BillBell73 on 11/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Raspberry liqueur, licorice, dust and raw venison on the nose. Fairly powerful, rustic and ripe but not out of bounds with plenty of tannin and acid to balance out the fruit. It’s a big wine, and not a style that I’m accustomed to drinking, but I like the tension between the ripeness and the feral elements at play here and it works well with the right food pairing. (1765 views)
Tasted by prism on 7/13/2023 & rated 94 points: I brought this to a pot-luck dinner hoping to share it with the known red drinkers, but they were onto beer or Rosé, so I had couple of glasses myself, which were lovely. Took about ninety minutes for the (non-objectionable) brett to blow off completely; this would have been even better the next day. (But alas, the evening's hosts drink only white...) (2320 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 6/4/2023: Half bottle. Deep ruby. Medium weight. Black raspberry, bark, cocoa, smoke, and a bit of herbs. Ripe and powerful without overt sweetness. Outstanding acidity and substantial tannin. More Beaucastel than Charvin in a way. This is so impressive out of a tenth that I imagine larger bottles will easily have a 25 year life span. (3120 views)
Tasted by PVJC on 5/13/2023 & rated 94 points: Rating a point higher than the previous bottle we had a year ago. Decanted 1hr and had with grilled ribeye. Head to head with the last glass of a 2010 Vieux Telegraphe from the previous day we agreed this was clearly the winner. Drinking very well and going strong. Would wait another year before opening another to see if it has more room to improve if I had any more. (2418 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 5/12/2023 & rated 84 points: Remains dark; compact bouquet; pinched fruit on a rough hewn on a hard palate; charmless. This is 2nd poor bottle from this vintage. Not up to Charvin's usual high standards. (2482 views)
Tasted by 2caveman on 3/12/2023 & rated 92 points: Another very nice encounter with m charvin. 2 hour decant and more might have been beneficial. Still a bit tight but offering up generous spices amidst robust structure. This wine has many good years ahead with favorable development (2468 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 2/7/2023 & rated 93 points: This still needs time. Fairly burly for a Charvin. Reflects the vintage. (2441 views)
Tasted by Radboy on 10/29/2022 & rated 95 points: Stunning wine. (2614 views)
95 pts (2755 views)
Tasted by finewinebuff57 on 10/8/2022 & rated 89 points: I was rather disappointed by Charvin's 2010 Cotes du Rhone (see note from September 2021), and this is a rather untypical Charvin CdP. Still pretty youthful and at 15% alcohol, without the - usually lightness and elegance. In it's own way impressive but needs more time. (2353 views)
Tasted by psi on 10/1/2022 & rated 95 points: This is what Charvin should taste like... every time. Unfortunately this has not been my experience. Too many bottles not living up to the hype. Too expensive in the end. A great way to end our encounter. No more bottles in the cellar. (1798 views)
Tasted by zpearson on 9/3/2022 & rated 85 points: I saw some CT notes saying dark and uncommonly structured, and to decant. So I did. I ultimately gave this 4 hours in a decanter and something was wrong here. It's very dark garnet and smells like raspberry liqueur and tannins. It's hard and unpleasant, and while it did get a bit softer, this was supremely atypical for this producer (e.g. not light, elegant, balanced, aromatic), so judgement reserved. I've got one more and I'm just going to forget about it and hope. But tonight, I am depressed. (2711 views)
Tasted by Dale M on 8/14/2022 & rated 94 points: Decanted 2hrs. On one hand, perhaps not the most opportune time to open this, yet I was really glad I did, as I feel I have a very clear marker on where this wine is now and where it will be in the years ahead. My first taste of this in 15 had me dub it as the “Ivan Dragon’ - or ‘I will break you’ wine - so much structure that it had me wondering if they messed up and just dumped a bunch of Mourvèdre in that bottle by mistake. But now 7 years later, I think we have finally crested the Mountain, and it just a matter of time to let the tertiary elements to fill in. Yet, for all its brawn, there is an elegance too - lovely dark fruit that is both fresh and precise. This baby will sail to 25+ and is going to be a true CdP long distance runner. (2623 views)
Tasted by PVJC on 6/20/2022 & rated 93 points: First ever bottle of Charvin. Decanted 1 hr. No detailed notes but very good with flank steak. "Precise" from another review was a good word for this wine. (2872 views)
Tasted by Eric on 6/6/2022 & rated 94 points: Love this. Classically Charvin. Pure and intense, focused, precise, mineral, raspberry, white pepper. Faintly sweet, yet savory and mineral. Sharp, grippy, chewy and tannic, but so pleasurable. (3479 views)
Tasted by hckschr40 on 5/20/2022 & rated 89 points: Medium ruby heading towards garnet.

There’s a lot of black licorice and balsamic on the nose, suggesting more age than it has. Red fruit is underneath with leather and earth.

Palate is nicely mature, with acidity and tannins still in good form. More fruit here: blackberries, black raspberries, along with earth and tobacco.

Based on this bottle it is not a long-termer.

On closer examination the cork is a bit like Swiss cheese and it appears there was some transfer. (2572 views)
Tasted by aknot13 on 2/19/2022 & rated 93 points: Still very young (2769 views)

OWNERS & HISTORY:
The Domaine Charvin was founded by Guillaume Charvin in 1851. 16 years later, in 1867, the entire planting area was destroyed by vine fretters. But William Charvin and other members of the family didn’t let this get them down, and replanted the soil. At this time, the family name also changed from Charavin to Charvin – due to an administrative error. The winery is situated in the northwestern part of the region next to Château Maucoil.

The family began its work with four hectares of land in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The first bottling at the winery – intended only for private consumption – took place in 1951. During the following years, most of the wine was sold to dealers. In 1990, with Laurent Charvin, the sixth generation took over the family business. During his first year, he produced some 8,000 bottles of wine. The remainder was still sold to local dealers. Since 1990, the amount of wine produced has increased each year. At the moment, the winery has 8.2 hectares of land in three different lieux-dits: Maucoil, l’Arnesque, and Cabrières, all in the northwestern part of the region. The soil there consists mainly of limestone and loam, and is more or less covered with stones. The average age of the grapevines is 45 years. Laurent Charvin loves to philosophize about nature, adjusting himself to whatever happens outside: to the weather, the soil, and the grapevines. He explains:

“I’m not sure whether the quality of the wines increases with passion; the potentials of the soil and of the grapevines are more important. You have to comprehend what you have. Besides, you should never try to copy your neighbors, because each parcel has unique material with its own DNA.”

GEOGRAPHY & VARIETALS:
Only a single red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced; it consists of 85% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Vaccarèse. The wine is made in a very traditional manner. No stems are removed; after sorting, the grapes are lightly pounded and then poured into fermentation tanks made of concrete. The wine is recirculated daily during alcoholic fermentation and maceration, which last around three weeks. Laurent is no friend of excessive extraction of the wine, but rather aims at more balance, freshness, and structure in the wine. Experimentally, and always striving to maintain optimum freshness, Laurent uses concrete tanks exclusively during the ripening process lasting eighteen months. All of the wine is bottled without interruption and without filtering, in order to avoid even the slightest differences from one bottle to the next. Annual production amounts to around 30,000 bottles.

"It would be no problem for me to make two cuvées: a powerful one and a light one. But I am convinced that only a mixture of the two will make a wine the way a wine should be, and the way I like it!"
- Laurent Charvin

Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Located in the northwest part of the appellation, with vines chiefly in Cabrieres, Maucoil, and Mont Redon, Laurent Charvin makes one of the most elegant and seamless Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Opting to produce a single cuvée, the winemaking here is staunchly traditional, with no destemming and fermentation and aging occurring all in concrete tanks for 21 months, bottled unfiltered. This is a wine that can age 20 years from any vintage as well as be accessible quite young with just a little breathing.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
