Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 47 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by NiklasT on 3/2/2024 flawed bottle: Corked. (78 views)
Tasted by Tuvan on 9/10/2023 & rated 91 points: Super, fresh, zesty and rich! (213 views)
Tasted by NiklasT on 7/22/2023 & rated 92 points: Sooo good, almost mindboggling at this ”village” level. Still with drive in the acidity and that maritime / ouster shell minerality but now with riper yellow apples. Have gained some roudness as well. Even better after a night in the fridge. (181 views)
Tasted by cannym on 9/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Really fine. Very much on the reductive spectrum. Struck match, lemon and lime, limestone. Real depth and surprising length. Decent acidity. Good concentration. Very good indeed. (536 views)
Tasted by Rossodio on 5/29/2021 & rated 90 points: Not at all resembling Burgundy nor typical California Chardonnay, this straddles an in between line... enjoyable certainly, with a reductive quality, I don't think it will improve from here. Good with white rice and simple grilled chicken. (663 views)
Tasted by NickNYC on 10/30/2020 & rated 92 points: P&P. very appealing bottle with reductive note. powerful yet balanced. long and smooth. (810 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 2/8/2020 & rated 91 points: Pours a medium straw yellow. The nose immediately leaps from the glass and has good complexity. Evidently showing notable reduction. The nose wafts struck match, flint, mint, candied lime peel, kaffir lime leaf, pear, and gravel pit. The palate is high acid, clean with very high acid, finishing on a slightly austere bitter lime pith note. Just a lovely wine. (1788 views)
Tasted by ChristyLeighNY on 1/25/2020: Strong on the nose - oxidized toasted notes, gasoline or petroleum, which didn’t blow off. Very little fruit. Doesnt suit our taste, overpowering savory and inorganic notes. (949 views)
Tasted by melzar on 10/24/2019 & rated 90 points: Ditto previous notes. Addendum: Much better on day 2. (882 views)
Tasted by melzar on 8/12/2019 & rated 90 points: 89 on day one. 90 on day 2, when the fruit appears ,to balance the acidity and reductive notes. finishes a little hot. I like this style of California Chardonnay. Bone dry and somewhat austere, this wine shows promise of positive evolution. (930 views)
Tasted by Nyrican on 7/28/2019 & rated 91 points: Or oak well balanced between mineral and fruit. Citrus comes through. Easy to drink went well with lobster salmon and while cooking. Very nice wine. Would buy again. (777 views)
Tasted by Allaboda on 6/9/2019 & rated 92 points: Lovely wine, with good minerality, acidity and citrus driven fruit (1088 views)
Tasted by melzar on 5/20/2019 & rated 89 points: Atypical California Chardonnay. No residual sugar. Austere and mineral driven. Extreme reductive notes dominate the palate. I admit to being overly sensitive to this "matchstick" quality. Addendum: On days 2 and 3 the fruit emerges to balance the reductive quality. Now worth 2 more points. (822 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 3/23/2019 & rated 89 points: Atkin Chardonnay Comparative tasting (Lismore): (Tasted Blind): Initial cordite and reductive characters segue into riper fruit on the nose of stone fruit and wood smoke - it reminded me of Dog Point but also had that linear feel on the palate of Santa Maria. The entry is mouth-cleansing with plenty of acidity and persistence. Fresh Granny Smith apples join a hint of lemon, giving vibrant excitement but leaving one feeling it is on the greener, early-picked style. I thought then of Margaret River? or newer style Cali? (131 views)
Tasted by Justin S on 3/1/2019 & rated 91 points: A compelling wine that is almost like a stylistic caricature of what it wants to be (French) rather than the real thing. A textural wine, the acidity is rounded off a bit, but you get a pretty generous and leezy mid palate with some ginger and prickly spice. Not too much cream. I enjoyed it. Forced is not the right word, the best comparison I have is like a good Elvis impersonator. (1110 views)
Tasted by sung251 on 2/21/2019 & rated 90 points: Tasted good but at the same time tasted extremely young. In fact it reminds me of some very young Chassagne Montrachet Village wine I've had in the past. Currently the wine is a bit disjointed at the moment and feel it needs more time for the oak to better integrate and to further tame the perception of acid. Lots of upside. Would try 5 years later. (1018 views)
Tasted by ashikoh on 1/2/2019 & rated 90 points: Light golden hue. Aromas of lemon peel, lees, white flowers, chalk, and a bit of smoke. With good acidity and absence of prominent new oak, it leans more to the Burgundian end of the spectrum than California. Made from a blend of fruit from Rita’s Crown and Bentrock Vineyards aged in 500 L barrels. 13% ABV. (1037 views)
Tasted by RobinHeimdahl on 12/29/2018 & rated 90 points: No formal notes. Stand by my earlier score. Delicious! (796 views)
Tasted by dmorden on 11/26/2018 & rated 91 points: Yellow gold. Hints of green flakes. Tropical nose. Caramely pineapple. Very round. Delicious!
The wine looks yellow gold colored. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like melon, pineapple and medium toast. It tastes like pineapple and butterscotch. The body is medium/full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity. (1035 views)
Tasted by Pavan on 11/16/2018 & rated 92 points: Powerful new world chardonnay (875 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 10/12/2018 & rated 91 points: Really nice with smoke, fresh fruit and some butter. Energy, concentration, balance. Perhaps a bit more fat and less mineral than your standard Burg but definitively leaning old world in style. Good wine! (1061 views)
Tasted by Argrath on 10/6/2018 & rated 90 points: Full, smoky, oaky nose. Rich apple. Roasted hazelnuts. Fresh acidity.
Fullish, intense palate. Rich and youthful. Grape, toast, nutty and minerally flinty. Very appealing. Lacks some stuffing for really great. Very burgundian. Can be cellared further. (611 views)
Tasted by Macki on 10/2/2018: Very Burgundian - pear and lactic notes, savory quality, so very interesting. Muriel says it drinks like old vine Grand Cru. Wow! (839 views)
Tasted by tarheel17 on 10/1/2018: Very impressive. Tasty fruit, complete acid, sensual body. Too distracted for better notes, so I’ll just have to buy another bottle and do my due diligence. $35 is a bargain. (880 views)
Tasted by Kevindexter on 9/29/2018 & rated 91 points: Medium body, medium acidity, a bit oaky should rest for a while (642 views)

Sandhi Wines

producer website

Sandhi is a small-scale producer in Santa Rita Hills, California.

The winery was founded by legendary sommelier Rajat Parr and winemaker Sashi Moorman.

Sandhi wants to represent the sacred union between man, earth and vine needed to create the best wines. The focus is mainly on chardonnay and pinot noir from Santa Barbara County and the vineyard locations are carefully selected for their unique qualities and personalities.

The wines are often described as being able to beat many great Burgundians in blind tastings and really show off the expressiveness and elegance that California has to offer.

These finer edge qualities are no surprise as the majority of the fruit is from the Domaine de la Cote estate vineyards, home to some of the country's rarest and most high-toned Pinots.

Tasting Note
Beetroot, cherry and plum flavours are most in evidence along with a developing gamey, autumnal note that will develop further in time.

A contradictory Pinot of purity and depth.

About Sandhi

Sandhi is the partner wine label to Domaine de la Cote, founded by Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman in the Santa Rita Hills area of Santa Barbara, up the coast from Los Angeles.

Sandhi are generally more approachable wines, to the palate and the wallet, than Domaine de la Cote, and explore the potential of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from across Santa Barbara and California.

Sandhi means 'treaty' or 'alliance' in Sanskrit, to represent the partnerships he has formed with local, sustainable grape growers who supply much of the fruit for Sandhi wines.

Sandhi Wines Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills

Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman of Domaine de la Côte and Sandhi in Santa Barbara County have become two of the strongest proponents of exceptional quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the United States. They are also two of the more controversial. In California, their work is strongly associated with the now retired provocative organisation 'In Pursuit of Balance' (IPOB). The idea led to anger from the California wine establishment, who were attached to defending balance in bigger-bodied, high alcohol wines.

The wines, which really are quite special, embody the philosophy of owners Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr, which centres around freshness, vitality and balance. In the words of Jancis Robinson MW: "These are wines that eschew the heavy-handed, overripe approach of so many Californian producers. They are beautifully elegant, always refreshing and effortlessly drinkable."

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
