Drinking so much better than my first un-impressive btl back in 2014 & there's still some upside, I think. With just one btl though, no regrets where we found it. Classic Pauillac with cigar ash, berries & forest floor on the nose. Lead pencil, more cigar and red fruit on an elegant mostly resolved palate. Very enjoyable with Nita's cast iron flank steak. Purchased a few years down the road from release but spent most its time in my wine cabinet. Served in the high 50s/low 60s. (1277 views)

 Tasted by drmarclevine on 10/14/2023 & rated 94 points: This was singing tonight. Decanted one hour. Intense aromas of cassis, mushroom, green pepper, and cedar planks. Just lovely in the mouth with dark red berries carrying the load along with tobacco and mint. Deep and powerful but with plenty of acidity providing raciness and tension. Long, edgy, resinous, finish. What a great ride! Drink now or hold for another 5 years, at least. Great stuff. (1306 views)

 Tasted by Kmmk on 4/8/2023 & rated 92 points: Took it to a restaurant so not enough time to decant. Aired for about 30 minutes but 1-2 hours would have been preferable.

Aroma was solid right from the pour. Scents of ripe berries and blue flowers were obvious even without having to put nose to glass. Colour was deep garnet and shimmering. Really lovely hue. Palate was surprisingly weak on fruit. Wood, spice, smoke and lots and lots of leather. Not in a bad way, but sweetness from fruit was demure, or at least overshadowed by the warm elements. Nice medium-weight in the mouth with good acidity and a very satisfying finish. Make no mistake, it's a lovely wine but not up to the standards of what I know the Comtesse is capable of. No signs of fading and will hold for at least another five years. (1683 views)

Subtle nose of ripe pure wild berry fruits! The palate is of course delicate and silky smooth, having said that, it is wine full of energy and gave you a very long finish, the attack of the wild fruits goes on and on! An enlightening experience will put a smile on your face! A first growth quality! (1950 views)
 Tasted by Philip67 on 12/27/2022 & rated 92 points: I thought maybe the 2001 would be able to step into the shoes of the 1996, which has always been an amazing wine. But "no" this is a completely different wine, made far more in the Parker style - it is really monolithic. I wonder whether this is biggest Pichon ever made? There is prominent charry oak here, which remains throughout but does recede a a little. This far fuller than you might expect if you know the Pichon Comtesses of the 1990's, nonetheless it retains some of the famous Comtesse elegance and feminine nature.

This has the Comtesse perfume, along with generous red and black fruits. Notes of leather revealing its age. Medium finish and largely straightforward still. This is still young and very primary. It will be better on 5 to 10 years, though it can be drunk now I would consider it a waste. Wil be very long lived. (1601 views)

Medium to light-weight in the mouth with softened black cherry and cough drop leading the way. I fully echo Jeff Leve’s note, though I will not wait more than 3 years to consume the remaining bottles since the additional time will not enhance its current standing. All the first-time bordeaux drinkers picked this as their WON since the grapes and tannins are fully integrated and the nose, mouthfeel and taste are balanced and very pleasing. Medium-bodied, silky, elegant, fresh, round, and lush, here you find loads of ripe, plummy red berries, hints of chocolate, tobacco leaf, herbs, cigar box, and a touch of spice. Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
