 Tasted by garambler on 10/17/2010 & rated 92 points: We drank this with friends over Venison stew on 10/17/10. It had a great bouquet of floral, blueberry, leather, vanilla and spice aromas. The palate was very smooth, balanced and well integrated with flavors of blueberry, plum, vanilla, spice and leather. It is amazing how much this improved in the two years since my last bottle. 91+ (1842 views)

 Tasted by Rancho Huichica on 1/3/2009 & rated 96 points: Blackberries, chocolate, anise, and maybe just a little menthol on the nose. Very rich and thick on the palate, with the blueberry and hop characters that I get in every Charbono/Bonarda. Very restrained oak. The wine has a complexity and tannic backbone that I assume come from the old Calistoga vines- lovely layering and balance between that peculiar Charbono fruit, rounded non-drying tanins which work the middle of the tongue, and just a little bit of remnant acidity. I should point out that I've liked virtually every Charbono/Bonarda I've tasted, so there's a lot of personal aesthetic preference at work, but I think this is a truly remarkable wine. (2303 views)
 Tasted by garambler on 8/14/2008 & rated 88 points: I had this as part of a Charbono tasting on 8/9/08. It had aromas of blueberry, plum & vanilla with slightly sweet flavors of the same. It was very dry with serious pucker power! Surprisingly, it isn't terribly unpleasant. (1809 views)

"Charbono is a grape variety found in California. It is not very common in California, but is the second most commonly grown variety in Argentina, where it is known as Bonarda (which is not the same as the Bonarda Piemontese varietal). The wine made from charbono tends to be dark, with medium to high tannins and acidity.

After genetic testing conducted by Carole Meredith, it was determined to be the same grape as the grape known as Corbeau, Douce Noire, or Charbonneau in the Savoie region of France; but in spite of repeated references, it is probably not related to Dolcetto of the Piedmont. Both varieties produce prodigious quantities of large clusters of very dark grapes, but Dolcetto ripens early and produces light, fruity wines with limited aging potential. Charbono ripens quite late and produces wines of great substance, with significant aging potential. It is likely that this confusion arose because an Italian synonym for Dolcetto is "Dulce Nero" which translates to "sweet black," as does the french name "Douce Noir" for Charbono."
