Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 79 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by JonnyG on 2/12/2024 & rated 91 points: Burgundies, Blanc et Rouges (Sta. Rita Hills, CA): Served double blind. A bit of a vexing bottle, seemingly fairly young based on appearance and taste, with notes muted green apples and saline, but at the same time lacking brightness and acidity -- not quite flabby, but missing some expected freshness. When revealed, the owner indicated that the cork had been thoroughly saturated, so I would deem this an "affected" bottle. While it did improve a bit when revisited during dinner, it never really soared. (441 views)
Tasted by robertgf on 1/1/2024 & rated 94 points: A New Year: Medium gold color, a big rich chard. with enticing fruity nose. Soft and smooth mouth feel. Rich riper fruit -almost sweet. Delicious. (414 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 1/1/2024 & rated 93 points: 2023 New Years Eve: More impressive than a bottle 2 years ago. It's hard for me to describe this chardonnay because it is well integrated and suave, kind of everything you want in a chardonnay, just a bit understated. Lively, rich and round, but mostly elegant. (592 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 12/31/2023 & rated 90 points: New Years Eve (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Lean, almond cream, slate, a bit oxidative, lemon. Good, but not what I expected from it. Did not age well over the next few days. (626 views)
Tasted by MN Wine Junkie on 12/31/2023 & rated 93 points: 2023 New Years Eve Celebration! (Kevin's House): This was a very nice wine and a great follow up to the 2018 Dauvissat Petit Chablis.

The nose was very Chablis like with citrus (mostly lime zest) with lots of flint and steely minerality notes. The palate was surprisingly creamy and nice, starting with pear and poached apple (including a subtle sweetness), then building up to some flinty notes with a slightly bitter chalky taste (but not in a negative way...was actually a nice contrast), and finishing with some noted of sweet toasty oak. A very nice Bourgogne that showed the fruit and terroir quite well, IMO. 93+ for my palate and very enjoyable! (605 views)
Tasted by victorzg on 11/24/2023 & rated 91 points: PNP@saison. pale yellow color, lemon, white flower, biscuit and popcorn. not too complicated, but is a good representation of a bourgogne blanc. 91pts (426 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 9/22/2023 & rated 91 points: Light yellow; ripe pear, honey, white flowers; richness, rounded, litchen fruit; seems mature “a point”, nice power, perhaps a bit too little acidity; nice wine (501 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 2/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Straw yellow; rich flavours nose with hint of citrus and some bread; sweet in the attack, soft in the middle, followed by a semi-intense acidity, white pear and honey; long aftertaste; first tasting of this wine were it does not appear (too) young, light and white, has clearly developed, “gained weight” and matured; lovely now, not sure it will improve from here (1038 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 12/3/2022: Tasted over 2 hrs
-translucent light-med gold
-ripe yellow fruit banana note
-med/med- acidity, med weight remnants of ripe yellow fruits not a lot of complexity as expected for a Bourgogne
-OK (1339 views)
Tasted by BoxerBee on 9/29/2022 & rated 92 points: Very elegant. Understated creamy fruit framed by just the slightest hint of popcorn and butter. Better for every sip. (1554 views)
Tasted by Wine MOB on 9/6/2022 & rated 90 points: Yummy!! Very nice balance that delivers everything without trying to be too much. This is like a great village wine and shows very little for being 7. Nope body, stone fruit, lemon oil, floral, slight nuttiness, maybe almonds, maybe hazel nuts, but totally in the background. Acids are there, but help keep the flavors coming and capable of not being outdone by the concentration. I have been drinking this wine with good age on it since the 1990 vintage and after several dozen bottles, I have never been disappointed or believe that I did not hit a pot of gold with what I paid. (1576 views)
Tasted by Peech on 5/19/2022 & rated 90 points: flinty, a little tropical stone fruit. (1815 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 3/25/2022 & rated 90 points: Light hay yellow; steely, good acidity, white pear; simple and clean expression (1626 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 2/20/2022 & rated 92 points: The cork was completely soaked with signs of some leakage, wine was fine, flint, minerals, lemon, stony, finesse in the mouth, still racy, v nice & picked up weight over the 3 hours drinking it (1640 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 12/9/2021 & rated 92 points: Crisp and sharp. Almost chablis-like. very enjoyable. (1553 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/9/2021 & rated 91 points: Nita's Cassoulet and Mostly CdP (Craig & Nita's Place): Pale gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. This was the second time in a month that I've had the good fortune to experience this wine. Tonight this struck me more for the peach and stone fruit, delicate limestone minerality, precision and finesse. So very good. (1878 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 10/24/2021 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. Nice, polite, mineral, personality for a simple Bourgogne. Proves to me that the best producers make better wines than their peers at every level. Not cheap, but I would pay this again. 5-12-16-8: 91/100. (1557 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 10/7/2021 & rated 90 points: Still dining outside in MN October (St. Genevieve): Lightly, lively, nice finesse, slight matchstick. This is very elegant and a bit understated. (1593 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/7/2021 & rated 91 points: Mixed WTDS: AKA "Bring a Nice Bottle" (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN): Light gold color. Drank a glass plus over an hour. This was in a very nice drinking window; delicate and finessed with a cedarbox eathiness, lemon, very fresh, tangerine, and this flinty minerality. Very well balanced and quite lovely. 91+pts. (1618 views)
Tasted by eschaefer on 9/15/2021 & rated 90 points: Flash note. Good wine. Crisp and refreshing. Light green straw color. Granny Smith, flint, lemon zest all around. A little phyllo dough. Good mouthfeel. I liked it and about the only Leroy that a majority can buy regularly. Well recommended (1260 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 4/28/2021 & rated 91 points: This was drinking beautifully tonight almost immediately after opening with lots of penetrating stone and tropical fruit flavors, a hint of nutmeg, brisk acidity, firm minerality and nori undertones. Quite nice and drinking well above its level, but not it’s price point. (1492 views)
Tasted by jhbehrens on 3/31/2021 & rated 88 points: Rather flat and watery and with some tertiary notes. Over the top now (1478 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 12/25/2020: Very good wine. Opened nicely with air. (1996 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 10/25/2020 & rated 90 points: Light yellow; sweet nose, hint of vanilla, flinty, bit of citrus; light rounded body, nice gentle depth; straightforward nice (2069 views)
Tasted by MissHighwater on 10/17/2020 & rated 94 points: Excellent stuff and very good quality for white burgundy at this price (1925 views)

Maison Leroy

Producer website

Maison Leroy was founded in 1868 and has been a negociant operation throughout its history. As a negociant, Maison Leroy purchases grapes, must (unfermented juice), and finished wine (both in barrel and in bottle) to finish (as appropriate) and place the Leroy label on. Leroy wines are ranked highly in the negociant hierarchy with many of the bottlings being very highly sought. This reputation comes from long-standing relationships that the Leroy family has in Burgundy. These relationships allow Maison Leroy to procure choice wines for the label. Bottlings vary from vintage to vintage, based upon what can be acquired at the quality levels required for the Leroy label. In addition to owning Maison Leroy, Lalou Bize-Leroy is proprietor of Domaine Leroy and Domaine D'Auvenay. Both of these Domaines produce wines from wholly-owned vineyards and are distinct from the Maison Leroy portfolio, despite label similarities between Maison and Domaine Leroy.

The Japanese luxury department store owner, Takashimaya, shaped a unique business alliance with Leroy in 1988. Takashimaya acquired 1/3 of the shares in Maison Leroy, provided the funding needed for Madame Leroy to establish Domaine Leroy and purchase Vosne-Romanée vineyards of Charles Noellat and Gevrey-Chambertin vineyards of Philippe-Rémy. Takashimaya is still co-owner of Maison Leroy and exclusive distributor to the important Japanese market. Some wines from Maison Leroy are only available in Japan.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
