Tasted by SoleModel23 on 5/1/2024 & rated 97 points: Equivalent with my previous tasting note.... I can't fathom how this wine has such a low score on here...... Makes me question.. First / Second Growth Caliber by end of the night.. Phenomenal (86 views)
Tasted by doctornoah on 2/7/2024 & rated 92 points: Very consistent with last note. A great success for 1998 Napa. Tasted blind with a few friends. One picked younger Napa, the other old world Cab Franc. (378 views)
Tasted by SoleModel23 on 1/5/2024: Wow, Just Wow! I wish I had 3 cases of this wine with how beautifully it drank tonight! WOTN!

Opened & Decanted for 45 minutes. Served Blind at the infamous "Correa Vortex", Danny's response was: "Are you stupid? This is without a doubt a left bank Bordeaux, and I would even go as far as to say this might be a first growth!" Big words for a wine from a "horrible" vintage! (Thanks Robert Parker) Lol, Everyone was shocked when bottle revealed and even more shocked when noticing the vintage. Still talking about how great this wine is today and we can't find them for sale anywhere on the internet! (323 views)
Tasted by Gregmonroe on 10/27/2023: This wine showed really well tonight. Opened with ah so, and cork in perfect condition. Nose of leathery red fruit. Slight bricking, lots of tertiary aromas and flavors, but still primarily red fruit. Held its own against a really stacked line up. Bordeaux like. Delicious, and only improved with air, but was gone fairly quickly at 4th Friday. (491 views)
Tasted by doctornoah on 8/15/2023 & rated 92 points: Not the biggest or fruitiest, but certainly deep, complex and refined. Clear varietal notes of savory, green pepper. Dark fruit still there, with leather and underbrush tones as well. Very Bordelaise. Would have guessed an early 2000's or later 90's Left Bank.

for 1998, a terribly maligned year, this is a resounding success. (639 views)
Tasted by wDave on 2/5/2023 & rated 90 points: Decanted for a couple hours. Very good with lamb tagine. Will be good for a few more years. (1105 views)
Tasted by Papies on 4/6/2021 & rated 92 points: Needs a a good hour in a decanter to get to the better place. On open it is just dominated by sweet notes. \it opens up however and shows a very herby side and the sweet/herby side points to a St Emilion with its dominance in cab franc. Very solid wine, not the most complex of Tognis and definitely with possibility for bottle variation but very nice especially for those looking for a more classic less powerful expression of Napa. 91-92 . Drinks very well now but def has life ahead. (2866 views)
Tasted by Papies on 1/26/2021 & rated 91 points: Decanting helps albeit not essential. Its a vintage that maybe the ripeness got a bit out of control so we can see how when young this was very different. Maybe a touch of how La Mouline 2003 is for Guigal.
But 22yrs along the way this has benefited from time in bottle and the Togni wine making has ensure longevity and this easily has another 15-20yrs of capacity . Its not the most charming Togni put there but its also the cheapest on the curve so worth the price tag in a way. We argued a bit over the mark on this and needed up with 91-92 and for a change Nicol was more forgiving. Definitely as that Bordeaux feel across now, yep more ripeness but also a smoky feel to it.  Tasted by AllRed on 11/28/2020 & rated 90 points: 4th Saturday Group: Uptown Brown Bag (M&R): Courtesy of R&D, popped and poured with dinner. Currants and green herbal elements on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied and fully-integrated, still showing some fruit, but clearly this wine's best days are in the past. Still quite good though, and may hold for a short while at this level before further decline. (2803 views)
Tasted by TWMDoesWine on 9/26/2020 & rated 91 points: No notes - good, not great (would like to revisit in the future) (2352 views)
Tasted by mhudes on 9/20/2020 & rated 92 points: Watching the 49'ers vs Jets injury brigade with Walter (wearing masks, social distance). 2 hour decant. Purple in color. On the nose I get dark fruit and a little cigar box. Initially somewhat tannic and chalky, but after 20 minutes, this subsides. On the palate, I get cassis, blueberries and a bit of leather. Walter says "cinnamon", similarly I'm thinking nutmeg. Walter says "the peak may have been a year ago". Because of the initial tannin,I'm thinking the peak may be a year away. We'll see. Still, a very nice wine for a California cabernet from the "troubled" 1998 vintage. (2129 views)
Tasted by P-M on 10/26/2019 & rated 88 points: Beautiful nose as others have noted. Somewhat harsh and acidic palate. Benefits from decanting. Expect no improvement from further ageing. (1885 views)
Tasted by bapimaitra87@gmail.com on 7/13/2019 & rated 92 points: Supple, silky but with excellent length. Absolutely ready to drink. (1795 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 7/6/2019: From magnum.

A mixture of blackberry and red fruits on the nose, with a hint of that trademark "green" as well.

Savory on the palate, with good acidity - drinking very well from this format. (1870 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/9/2019 & rated 91 points: Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind Cabernet (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL): Tasted double blind in Cabernet from around the world tasting. Very bordeaux-like while still clearly from Napa. Age appropriate maturity, very good balance, good weight. Drink up. (2804 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 10/27/2018: A small taste in preparation for dinner later tonight.

Blackberry and herbs on the nose.

Some decent acidity here to lift the blackberry fruit on the palate. I would say fully mature at this point. (2285 views)
Tasted by Chiantihound on 3/12/2018 & rated 88 points: Like other notes, nose is great. Muted after that. Had a 1998 Seavey recently that showed much better - more evolution and earthy complexity. Do not know enough to say if is relative styles, but Seavey had palate. This was closed or just not developing. (2546 views)
Tasted by Procurare on 10/16/2016 & rated 89 points: I thought this good, but not great and I had great hopes at open as the nose was very nice - blackberry and smidge of earthy barnyard. All of that kind of went away tasting the wine. Definitely restrained, but it lacked verve and punch. A balanced wine - with some black fruit and earth. Tannins resolved. Not a bad wine but certainly fell short of my expectations.

Tasted by mouton45 on 8/16/2016 & rated 92 points: Brought to tonight's wine group dinner at Two Chefs. Parker's review was right on: Most of the guys thought it was a LB Bordeaux. Still has some time left. (3834 views)
Tasted by Milos on 8/12/2016 & rated 92 points: The critics got this one wrong. Beautiful nose of blackberry and charcoal; little shy at first but opened up quickly. Incredibly balanced palate, good mid-palate and long. Drinks well now but no need to rush. (3492 views)
Tasted by cannym on 6/11/2016 & rated 93 points: Really liked this. Great balance, restrained for a Napa Cab. Still dark ruby but it let's light through. Lots of black fruits, some spice, some fruit cake. Well resolved tannins. Good length. It easily outshone a Cakebread which was just far too big and sweet. Drinking very nicely now but no panic. (3654 views)
Tasted by NYC_Maenad on 1/22/2016: Enticing aromas of blackberry, graphite, and wild flowers present immediately upon opening. In the mouth, this is a relatively lean framed wine, though it is balanced and complete, with a lingering finish. Dark chocolate and some spicy notes join the mature fruit, and fill the mouth will a satisfying roundness. Though not heavy or full-bodied, this wine gives an impression of richness. Changed very little in the decanter or in the glass over a 3 hour period, making us think this is right at the sweet spot of maturity. Don't think the fruit is there for the long long haul - I'd drink in the next 3 years or so. A real pleasure and a solid value from this mostly scorned vintage. Shows that the "off" vintages from this period are often the best drinking wines and the best food wines, as they are more restrained and balanced next to their bigger and more exuberant brethren from '97.  Tasted by GSW on 10/1/2014 & rated 90 points: Still fun to drink at age 16 (3872 views)
Tasted by dougincornwall on 7/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Full body -- Significant mouth feel -- lots of coffee and cinnamon -- a bit of tobacco. Smooth -- but you will need to enjoy the richness of the herbs and almonds . Needs to open in the glass for a while. (3659 views)
Tasted by Wineguy76 on 6/16/2014 & rated 92 points: Displaying a deep ruby core and packed with powerful aromas of raspberry, lead pencil shavings and ripe plum, the lovely '98 Togni Cabernet is a medium bodied, smooth and wonderfully unctuous Napa elixir. On the palate the wine delivers pronounced chocolatey flavors lifted by wild berry, tobacco and spicy notes. Mild and pleasant tannins and a long 30 second+ finish. Drink now. (3807 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
