Tasted by Winance Tom on 3/7/2024 & rated 91 points: 10 years old, fruit is somewhat muted offering a dusty red cherry and some earthy tones. Enjoyable and might be better if consumed 2-3 years earlier. (232 views)
Tasted by andrewfowler on 1/4/2024 & rated 91 points: Lavender, cranberry, tar, and burning leaves to start, with some very pleasant tannins still hanging on 10 years after harvest and a cranberry-juice kind of acidity. As the glass decants, more leather, almost like a leatherbound book, and licorice come out, and the red fruits, rhubarb, sour cherry, pomegranate, and strawberry, are more at the fore. A nice before-the-fireplace sort of wine that I can imagine sitting well alongside some duck or pigeon. (276 views)
Tasted by JT4 on 3/25/2022: Very good Nebbiolo wine. (1568 views)
Tasted by Mckalm on 1/6/2022 & rated 91 points: Orangeröd, bra tannin o syra, viol, mörka bär, perfekt till svamprisotto, god (1780 views)
Tasted by Jochems on 11/2/2021 & rated 91 points: Initially this wine was a bit muted and herbacious. I left half a bottle for the next day and then it showed a whole lot better. Usually I try to follow the development during a few hours, but I wasn’t able to do so in this case. One thing s for sure: this wine needs a fair bit of time to show its best!

Medium-light ruby color. Full aromas of cherry, red berries, milk chocolate and a hint of violets. Full bodied with chewy-smooth tannins and fresh acidity. The fnish is very long and keeps on lingering.

Considering its age and current structure I would expect this wine to age, and probably improve, for at least some 10 more years. Drink now - 2033. (1983 views)
Tasted by dssmith on 2/23/2021 & rated 75 points: The wine has not aged well. I drank my first bottle of this 2013 in 2008. At that time I noted that the wine was very fruit forward, but with aeration it became more balanced and pleasant. With the present bottle the fruit was mostly gone. Left was an unpleasant acidic backbone. With aeration some of the fruit returned but all and all this was a less than enjoyable drinking experience. The color was dark red and the wine did not seem oxidized. (2203 views)

Tasted by cos65 on 10/4/2020: Odd squarish warped bottle.
Crystalline scarlet ruby with a garnet rim
Soft bitter cherry opening,
But gained quite a bit of leathery, tannic fruit with air. Lighter alcohol
Persistent on the palate.
Nice, but dry dry (1786 views)
Tasted by grapenomad on 9/20/2020 & rated 91 points: To be honest, the odd shape of the bottle attracted me most to this wine. And the fact that there is not a lot of Gattinara on the SG market. Led by previous CT reviews, I decanted this for 6 hours and even though I thought it was going to be enough, it still showed so much tightness. Nose was subtle, displaying mostly primary fruit at this stage complemented by hints of herbaceousness. Tannins and acidity are scorching high and can only be tamed by a good food pairing (in this case, a rich lamb leg). Not much depth so I’m not sure how well this will develop, but one thing is obvious - this needs 2-3 of taming to get to an enjoyable drinking stage. (1929 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 8/12/2020 & rated 92 points: Fine Wines SG - Nebbiolo BYOB (Praelum Wine Bistro): Medium ruby. Quite a good intensity on the nose and palate, and a good weight. Aromas and flavours of cherry, cloves, roses and tar. Good structure with intensity to boot (1633 views)
Tasted by Sebastian80 on 3/15/2020 & rated 91 points: Dusty stone cellar with everything else muted at first. Needs at least two hours of decanting. Then there’s lovely dried cherry and raspberry, roses, mushrooms, prune, spices, tar and tobacco. Complex nose. Simpler on the palate. Lighter body than barolo, more similar to Barbaresco but lacks intensity. A lot of mouth drying tannins and prominent acidity. Medium and fairly light finish. Note that this is not the riserva. (1543 views)
Tasted by JuliannaDHS on 2/22/2020 & rated 87 points: Disappointing. No obvious faults but this was very pedestrian. Pleasant nose of cherry, rose, and tar and then meh. Poor QPR. (1411 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 2/19/2020: Ruby garnet
Fresh soft opening with a tannic finish
Nice (891 views)
Tasted by WineKnurd on 12/3/2019: Family dinner night, Farina LaFayette Village. Drinking so well right now, plenty of black cherry, anise, and sweet cedar-spice along with nice flora undertones. Food friendly acidity and a nice tannic structure. Definitely value @ $25 (Wine Library). A- (92) evaluation. (1677 views)
Tasted by LEEJV123 on 9/16/2019 & rated 90 points: Medium full, very round, balanced, dusty, quite long. (1946 views)
Tasted by 560 B&W on 6/23/2019 & rated 88 points: PnP in Leucadia. Decent and typical; not special. Mid+ body, mid acid, 13.5% (2124 views)
Tasted by Wulffila on 5/4/2019 & rated 87 points: Easy-drinking Nebbiolo, acceptable QPR. (1843 views)
Tasted by maxima on 5/3/2019 & rated 87 points: Bu en succ.
Bouteille de forme non-standard...dans le temps elle était
givrée aussi. Pour le prix c'est correct, un peu trop sage et
fin, manque de corps et finale trop courte. (2489 views)
Tasted by mwneil on 5/1/2019 & rated 91 points: Medium bodied, good fruit, nice balance and complexity, riper than expected, enjoyed with Italian food, would drink again. (1734 views)
Tasted by Krassens on 4/7/2019 & rated 85 points: Quite underwhelmed by this, especially given the price. It has all the given Nebbiolo signatures, but lacks energy and intensity. (1544 views)
Tasted by JohnMainella on 3/31/2019: Lovely, easy to drink Nebbiolo. (1382 views)
Tasted by Thefatbastard on 2/15/2019: Deux bouteilles bu récemment. L'une droite, nette sur des notes minerales et de cerises. L'autre, plus boisée et épicée.
Dans les deux cas, le vin est très sec, l'acidité relevée et la finale longue quoique rêche. Noyau de cerises et amertume en fin be bouche.

Tasted by ThalesGaspar on 12/25/2018 & rated 88 points: Light, easy drinking, with a surprisingly nice finish. (1755 views)
Tasted by Gian on 12/9/2018 & rated 89 points: Nose of red fruits , spices, earth , toasted, on palate round , savory, nice acidity and long finish. Very good for the price I paid (1724 views)
Tasted by ricard on 11/19/2018 & rated 92 points: Surely Gattinara is one of the best kept secrets of the wine world. Relatively obscure, and overshadowed by the global reputation of Barolo and Barbaresco, this little region grows amazing Nebbiolo, and Travaglini in particular makes stunning wines. In spite of the eccentric and decidedly clumsy bottle shape. This is the entry-level red I think, and therefore the most accessible, but it is absolutely delicious. You'll want more and more of it. And it evolves in bottle over an hour or so, which is always a satisfying talking (and drinking!) point. Lovely Nebbiolo nose of roses and violets and truffles, splendid balance, savoury, a touch of leather and pepper, and a finish like a fresh mountain stream. A very good wine. (2354 views)

Travaglini

Producer Website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Travaglini is a family-owned wine estate in the tiny Gattinara appellation within north Italy’s renowned Piedmont region. Established in the 1920s by Clemente Travaglini, the winery is Gattinara’s most esteemed producer of traditional, limited-production wines from the nebbiolo grape (known locally as “spanna”). The family’s passion for winemaking has not diminished through the generations; Cristina and Cinzia Travaglini, great-granddaughters of Clemente, manage day-to-day operations at winery. Cinzia’s husband Massimo Collauto is chief winemaker, a role he inherited from his late father-in-law and beloved mentor, Giancarlo Travaglini (winemaker at Travaglini for 45 years). Giancarlo’s wife, Lilliana, oversees vineyard operations.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Northern Piedmont

Regional History:
The wines of Piemonte are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piemonte was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piemontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine - most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a French woman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour - later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy - this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. Outside of the Langhe, the most prominent area of wine production in Piemonte is the chain of sub-alpine hills that run through the provinces of Novara and Vercelli. Here the Romans introduced spionia, an ancient variety that thrived in foggy climates. Whether this was in fact a genetic ancestor of Nebbiolo is unknown, but the derivation of its name, Spanna, is now how the locals refer to this noble grape. The Morainic soils, mostly deposited along the Sesia River, are of glacial origin and produce more medium-bodied, aromatically driven nebbiolo than in the Langhe. The appellations of note in Novara are Gattinara, Lessona and Bramaterra, and in Vercelli are Ghemme, Fara, Boca, and Szizzano.
