Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by MJReb on 2/11/2024 & rated 92 points: Chez MG: Citrus, a little petrol, young. Good tension. (214 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 9/21/2023: Yellow. Petrol and orange zest. Medium bodied with outstanding glycerine feel. Promising start of bitter citrus and stone fruit, then a lot of soil on the back end, but it comes across as a little dull and missing a cutting edge. The acidity seemed more firm when I tasted this 2 years ago. (819 views)
Tasted by gtilley on 12/12/2022: Bottle no 1 of 2 opened today - it was unrecognisable compared to last time. Although not strictly faulty, definitely at variance to other bottles I've had. It was more sort of sherried, perhaps a bit oxidised. Not showing well and I decided not to serve it. (509 views)
Tasted by gtilley on 12/12/2022: Bottle no 2 of 2 opened today, on account of the first not being up to par. This was a different story altogether. More like a dry auslese in its steely acidity and taut profile - all grapefuit, steel and granny smith apple. If anything tasting less mature than previously. (542 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 12/25/2021: Medium yellow. Wow, this "basic" Sommerberg is dynamite. Glycerine, round with a touch of exotic fruit (pineapple?) but brought back to a resoundingly dry finish by lemon, great acidity, and a good lashing of soil. I was surprised by how ready this seemed tonight. (1306 views)
Tasted by drdan8 on 10/14/2021 & rated 90 points: Boxler has a well constructed Riesling here...but I felt the wine showed a bit too much perceived residual sugar for an Alsatian offering. If this was a German wine it would probably be classified in the kabinett / spatlese genre.

Explosive on the palate with dried apricot, pineapple, guava, and assorted tropical fruit. Smooth and seamless. I would have scored this higher if it exhibited less sweetness and greater austerity.

Would probably pair marvelously with Thai or spicy Malaysian cuisine. (801 views)
Tasted by gtilley on 8/8/2021: Consistent with previous note. Tasted beside an Eden Valley riesling of similar age it was noticeably fatter and more luxurious, but less linear and precise. (812 views)
92 (917 views)
Tasted by gtilley on 5/7/2021: Mm, really delicious. A lively bright light gold colour. Elegant nose of grapefruit, white flowers, orange zest. This all follows through onto the palate, which has a powerful acidic backbone but still seems somewhat relaxed. Drinking well, with plenty of time ahead of it. (737 views)
Tasted by Bergqvist1708 on 11/22/2020 & rated 92 points: Beautiful aromas of apple and honey then a balanced acidity and long length on the palate - not normally a fan of Riesling but this is an exceptional one - highly recommended (580 views)
Excellente bouteille. 91-92+? (794 views)
Tasted by Brian of Mull on 4/26/2020 & rated 94 points: This is really good. Searing acidity, Lime, stones and some tropical notes. Very good density and length. Also very good value for money. I bought 2 bottles on my last trip to London on recommendation of wine store. I will be on the lookout for this. One of the best whites I’ve had i a while. (621 views)

Albert Boxler

Producer website

Description
No domaine in Alsace makes better Rieslings than Albert Boxler. Maybe as good, but not better. Boxler has its’ vineyards around the charming hamlet of Niedermorschwihr, as well as in neighboring Turckheim. The production is ecological since many years.
Jean Boxler is many generation removed from his ancestor of the same name that moved here from Switzerland in 1673. Currently rules the roost at this humble yet incredibly exciting domaine. Intense and serious about his land. Hi Craft. and Hi wine. Jean is the genius behind what are certainly some of the finest white wine in Alsace (and the world).
All wines carry a code, which is:

10’s is Sylvaner
20’s is Pinot Blanc
30’s is Riesling
40’s is Muscat
50’s is Pinot Gris
60’s is Gewurztraminer
In addition, the various vineyards have their designation:

1 is Grand Cru Sommerberg
B and 2 are Grand Cru Brand
D is Duttenstein, a part of Grand Cru Sommerberg
E is Eckberg, a part of Grand Cru Sommerberg
JV betyder Jeunes vignes, young vines
K is Kirchberg, a part of Grand Cru Brand
Hence, a wine labelled L31D is a Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg from the section Duttenstein.

The wines from Boxler shine due to their finesse, purity, complexity and … all the other things that characterize great wines. Even better, since Jean Boxler manages to obtain mature fruit in the cooler years as well as to maintain firm acidity the warmer vintages, a Boxler wine will never ever let you down.
