Tasted by Dozhdbog on 4/18/2023 & rated 88 points: Improved from the last bottle.

The color in the glass is lighter than what I am used to with Syrah. More of a ruby red than a midnight burgundy.

The petrichor and blueberries maintain their dominance, but now distinct notes of vanilla and mild cherry show up mid-palate, and the finish is a touch chalkier and less acerbic.

I'm curious how this vintage would fare in another year or two, but sadly it's my last bottle. (729 views)
Tasted by Dozhdbog on 10/6/2022 & rated 86 points: Aromas of blueberries and loamy petrichor. There's a pleasing tartness on the end with a touch of white pepper.
Went nicely with our steaks. (837 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 3/29/2022 & rated 88 points: Much better than previous bottle. Lacks to off-putting acetone. Good density, not over ripe, balancing acidity. Good now and for a couple more years. A good value at $12. (1862 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 1/14/2022 & rated 84 points: Not a bad wine, but has a noticeable hint of acetone, and feels stronger than the 14.2%. Has some okay fruit - a little peppery, but also feels hollow. Not sure this will ever be better. (1790 views)
Tasted by GP75 on 12/27/2021 & rated 87 points: I like it but I'm not in love with it. Fruit and sour berry in a pleasing ratio. Not heavy, not light. Good balance and structure, whatever that means.

This is the type of red wine that does nice things when you add a drop of decent blanco tequila to it. Haven't figured out what a good sweetener is for that combo, but I'm sure there's something out there that would be perfect.

There are some Rhone style wines that are too precious for that, but this isn't quite there. But not bad. (1479 views)
Tasted by joraesque on 7/20/2021 & rated 89 points: Light-to-medium-bodied, with bright, crunchy fruit (still!). Drank well over 3 days. 14.2% ABV.

Tasted by FelineAvenger on 6/24/2021: Much lighter bodied than I would expect for Syrah. Was hoping, given the pedigree involving Bob Lindquist formerly of Qupé, that this could be the proverbial $12 wine that tastes like a $20-30 wine and becomes an "every day house red". Sadly, it wasn't. Popped-and-poured (after all for an inexpensive every day wine, who wants a wine that needs lots of TLC before it's worth drinking). It was merely "ok" -- for me - wife did not like at all. Drinkable, but not something I'd buy again. (1962 views)
Tasted by Raywilliams420 on 6/16/2021 & rated 88 points: Not meant to be consumed immediately in my opinion. . Needs to open an sit for a day or so. With cork on top. More fruit forward after first night an capping wine an letting sit room temperature for two days. Great nose. Great taste on third day. Alcohol taste an smell has decimated. (1639 views)
Tasted by OaktownRush on 4/1/2021 & rated 88 points: Consistent with the other notes here, bright red fruit, cracked pepper, a touch of meat and sesame paste — really lovely nose that definitely screams Syrah. The palate to me isn’t quite as distinct or defined, bright red fruit, pepper, and maybe a touch of florals on the initial taste, but it feels like the nose has more going on. Medium body and an open giving style, will pair with plenty of things. (1915 views)
Tasted by WinesDelft on 3/19/2021 & rated 85 points: Fruit forward Shiraz, easy sipping, enjoyable but no wow. (1676 views)
Tasted by BHRH on 3/18/2021 & rated 88 points: Consistent with other TNs. A lighter style of syrah, nevertheless juicy, fruity, but certainly not over-the-top in any way. Boysenberries and blueberries on the nose with some slightly spicy cherry fruit on the palate and a slightly sweet finish. A QPR champion, and terrific weekday quaff!! My wife described it as a cross between a riper Pinot and a modern Syrah. (977 views)
Tasted by Stephen.Somm on 2/24/2021 & rated 88 points: $12 at K&L. Classic Central Coast Syrah with notes of dark fruits, vanilla, and pepper. Solid, easy-drinking juice for a fair price. (1210 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 2/22/2021: Very tasty, great value. (1170 views)
Tasted by ziavino on 2/19/2021 & rated 88 points: Good QPR at $13. PnP, with candied black raspberry, loads of black pepper, and hints of smoke leading the way. Simple and tasty. (933 views)
Tasted by winepog on 2/12/2021 & rated 89 points: Tastes like a balanced syrah. Decent value here. Better than I expected. Cheers! (1018 views)
Tasted by Mbcjones on 1/26/2021 & rated 93 points: Delicious red that drinks like a medium bodied Pinot but has the fruit character and touch of subtle mineralogy that I would expect from a central coast wine. Super fruit forward and drinkable with or without food (1295 views)
Tasted by dannyK305 on 7/8/2020 & rated 91 points: dark cherry and raspberry jump from the glass on the nose with some savory notes of olives and roasted meat. it has a nice smooth finish. Solid syrah for $25 from a great producer. (3816 views)
Tasted by Wine212 on 7/6/2020 & rated 90 points: Bright red fruit, solid core and fine tannin and texture. Med plus finish that over delivered for the price. Great with braised short ribs. little hidden gem from Pax Mahle (3484 views)
Tasted by rmh66 on 3/15/2020 & rated 89 points: Saw this at Grocery Outlet and I had to buy it. Better with some air. Blackberry, plum, red cherry, earth, smoke, incense, graphite, and a little vanilla on the nose. Tart cherry, cranberry, blackberry, red cherry, earth, a little black pepper, bloody meat, wood, and herbs on the palate. Tart, juicy acidity, fine tannins, medium-long finish. Not quite as good as the old Agharta syrahs, but you can tell they are related. Surprisingly nice for the price. I should get some more. (4150 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 1/29/2020 & rated 84 points: Popped and poured. I was hoping this was the same caliber of wine as the North Coast Syrah, but sadly, it is not. Yes, it's identifiable as Syrah with blackberry fruit and some pepper, but the richness and body of the earlier North Coast bottlings are simply not present in this wine. A decent $8 (from Grocery Outlet) Wednesday night quaff, but nowhere near the Agharta wines I have known before. Curious what prompted Agharta to make this wine. Seems like they are killing off the brand to me...From amazing $80 North Coast Syrah to mediocre $8 Central Coast Syrah. Drink now - 2023. (4355 views)
Tasted by Motz on 1/16/2020 & rated 90 points: Not your typical California Syrah, in that it shows appealing varietal character. A touch savory and meaty, backed by a sturdy frame. Lingering finish. (4448 views)
Tasted by Eric.S on 11/23/2019 & rated 87 points: Identifiable as Syrah. Dark smokey fruit. The slightest “cheap wine” taste. Not complaining, paid $4 on close out. (1873 views)

2017 Agharta Wines Syrah Central Coast

The 2017 Agharta Syrah was originally produced by Qupé's original winemaker, Bob Lindquist; it was one of the last vintages Bob produced for the Qupé brand and somewhat forgot about until it was acquired by Vintage Wine Estates (the original barrels were put aside and not discovered until the purchase). Legendary winemaker Pax Mahle’s brand Agharta was also acquired in the deal and eventually became the label this mystery juice was bottled under.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
