| Community Tasting Notes (average 93.3 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 36 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by winelover1808 on 4/14/2024 & rated 93 points: had this a few weeks ago but my last few remaining Kistlers sadly highlight that I may have drunk many of these too young. i really enjoyed this - lots of fruit still left in it, and good acidity. time has dampened any overt oak. def not much minerality and fuller bodied so will not be mistaken for a white burg. but i really enjoyed this more than i expected (100 views) | | Tasted by wiscgrad on 3/22/2024 & rated 91 points: fully mature chard, and probably a bit past its prime drinking window. nice aromatics and med-full bodied on the palate. acidity is falling off a bit so I would drink up (179 views) | | Tasted by Mark4w on 8/14/2022 & rated 94 points: Kistler is my favorite US Chardonnay. 2014 probably close to end of prime drinking window. Compared to couple of years ago the acidity is down and extremely smooth. Fruity with peach lemon but again not acidic. At this point reminds me of a southern Rhône blend with slight sweetness. If not for the price it would be only Chardonnay I would drink. Compares favorably to a Burgandy from Montrachet costing several times more. (763 views) | | Tasted by rustyRudy on 3/7/2022: Continued to drink really well over several days, moderate oak but well balanced with the fruit (854 views) | | Tasted by rustyRudy on 3/5/2022 & rated 97 points: Golden yellow, packed with tropical fruits, pineapple, lemon, and a great finish (816 views) | | Tasted by winelover1808 on 8/5/2021 & rated 93 points: well made, rich, fruit driven new world chard. (910 views) | | Tasted by SouthernStateofMind on 6/9/2021: Similar to prior experience but finding the dairy and oak footprint a little overbearing. Several hours later muted aromas of lemon curd, peach, pineapple, coconut and marzipan appear. Full bodied, textured with weighted presence on the palate; flavors of lemon curd and marzipan dominate. Retains required acidity necessary for balance. Just left wanting for more fruit expression here. Finish is measured with slight detection of heat. Didn't see this improving previously and opinion remains un-changed. Drink now! (778 views) | | Tasted by KVM on 4/8/2021: Dark yellow. Hazelnut, pear, toast and butter. Palate has all that fruit, very rich, concentrated fruit a little sweetness and some crisp lemony acid. Lovely and it has a future. (759 views) | | Tasted by winelover1808 on 2/13/2021 & rated 92 points: Very good. Had this with a dumol Clare 2015, which won out for my palate. The Kistler Hyde has more oak, creme brûlée and fruit; a bit less acidity; def less minerality. A very very good wine that would shine in its own but I felt the dumol showed better. (753 views) | | Tasted by winelover1808 on 1/3/2021 & rated 93 points: deep golden color. plenty of sweet fruit, oak - good acidity and some salinity notes; very well done new world style chard. (776 views) | | Tasted by Empirate on 9/22/2020 & rated 94 points: Open 1 hour before dinner. All the things about California Chardonnay (ripe fruit, malolactic fermentation, oak) in a flattering iteration. First of 3, went well with shrimp, pasta, and a creamy paprika sauce. No rush to pull the cork on the remaining bottles, may be fun to see how this does past its 10th birthday. (767 views) | | Tasted by wineguy1968 on 6/28/2020: Nice but I prefer the Hudson over this (762 views) | | Tasted by Steven DiFiore on 6/7/2020 & rated 93 points: Nice traditional Kistler. (661 views) | | Tasted by DickMull on 1/19/2020 & rated 94 points: Luscious nose, with warm bread, honey, and papaya scents. It is relatively full bodied, but with a restrained acidic core that lasts all the way thru the long finish. It displays a variety of tropical fruit flavors. (748 views) | | Tasted by AWBryce on 12/23/2019: Oily, peachy, oaky, funky/earthy. Nice palate, rich and fruity but missing a touch of balancing acidity. still enjoyable (712 views) | | Tasted by Wine Problems on 10/17/2019 & rated 96 points: Drinking very nice right now. Vanilla, lemon bar, and some floral (hibiscus, perhaps?) notes on the nose. Honey, almond, mascarpone, lemon curd, honeycrisp apple, and a hint of pineapple, on the palate. Bright acidity and a medium finish. Kistler never disappoints! (842 views) | | Tasted by Glenn A on 6/27/2019 & rated 93 points: Really enjoyed this wine. Bouquet of apricot, apple, etc. Wonderful smell and taste. (774 views) | | Tasted by SouthernStateofMind on 3/10/2019: Pale gold in color with aromas of white peach, lemon zest, dairy and warm brioche. Softly textured on the palate with flavors of lemon curd, honey and roasted almonds. Well put together. Ripe fruit is balanced with required acidity. Provides even measured finish. Don't see this improving with age. Drink now! (995 views) | | Tasted by MaineMark on 5/22/2017 & rated 93 points: Lemons and pears, with crisp acidity and layers of complexity. Note: I originally over-chilled this, and it was not too impressive. As the glass warmed, the wine opened considerably and was very tasty. (2515 views) | | Tasted by Brent25 on 5/20/2017 & rated 90 points: Medium gold in colour; nose of cream, honey, brioche and lemon; palate follows nose; beautifully balanced and nuanced; didn't like it as much as Les Noisetiers (1787 views) | | Tasted by Man in Black on 12/8/2016: Medium lemon colour. The nose shows pronounced intensity aromas of lemon peel, ripe peaches, cedar, hints of cream and hints of matchstick.
It is dry in the mouth with a high crisp acidity. It has a medium alcohol and a medium+ body with a creamy mouthfell. It has pronounced intensity flavours and a long finish.
It is a very good quality wine. It has a lingering finish and very concentrated flavours well-balanced by the acidity. It also shows complexity provided by oak ageing, but the alcohol is a bit too high. (2401 views) | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |

Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa / SonomaSONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level. The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.CarnerosStraddles the southern ends of Napa & Sonoma Counties. |
