Tasted by rjsmall on 11/18/2023: Clear red colour. Strawberry, cranberry and little touch of vanilla. Glaciers cherry, sweet musk, cranberry flavours with a bit of tartness at the end. Still a good amount of fruit with a touch of acid bite. Very enjoyable - in a nice drinking window. (251 views)
Tasted by rjsmall on 9/8/2023: Clear, red colour. Cranberry, dark cherry and tar nose. Similar flavours with a touch of earthiness. Bright acid bite. Good food wine that is drinking nicely. (319 views)
Tasted by rjsmall on 3/31/2023: Clear, medium pale colour. Light nose of fennel and rosemary along with a bit of cherry and tar. Medium body, red fruits with a good acid bite. Long finish with a touch of liquorice. Drinking well. (568 views)
Tasted by rjsmall on 11/18/2022: Light, clear red colour. Cherry and liquorice on nose. Light and refreshing - cherry, raspberry and a touch of musk. Light to medium body. Enjoyable and matched nicely with a pizza. (671 views)
Tasted by wineswithmuscles on 8/7/2022: Shining, elegant, red-fruited and to me in many terms a textbook "entry level" Barbaresco. Fine, gentle tannins push up a bouquet of fresh strawberries, red currant, rose petal, tar and a whisper of anise. I like the classic and pure, lifted feeling here. The structure is solid, tightly wound and neither overloaded nor providing too much substance, which makes this Barbaresco a terrific choice for early drinking (but also also for cellaring more years). A classic, elegant Barbaresco and excellent introduction to the Rizzi winery. (863 views)

Tasted by winespine on 11/13/2021 & rated 91 points: This is our second bottle of the 2017 in the last few months and I enjoyed this one more, perhaps because the pairing was a little better: slow cooked puttanesca with spaghetti. The usual Barbaresco notes were here, but importantly the tannins had softened sufficiently so that this wine is enjoyable now. I’m sure it would do well in a decade, but I’m gonna enjoy my remaining bottles early, while we’re waiting for the more tannic Langhe beasts to mellow. (995 views)
(1770 views)
Tasted by billyloveswine on 7/17/2021 & rated 90 points: Notes of rose, strawberry, and forest floor. Medium-bodied and high acidity. Dusty tannins, but no need to wait if you have the right food to pair with (read: steak). Well made everyday Barbaresco. (846 views)
Tasted by GA_Seattle on 2/19/2021 & rated 89 points: Needs a lot of time. Day 1 austere. Day 2 somewhat opened, tannins giving way to fruit. Day 3, fruit up front followed by classic orange peel, high acidity; best so far still a ton of structure with very dry tannins for minutes. Try again in 2023-24. (944 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
