Community Tasting Notes (average 93.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 17 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Rbhan12 on 10/13/2023 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 30min then back to bottle and followed for a few hours.

Expressive nose of creamy ripe tropical fruit. Mango, apricot, melon. Distinct thick waxy note overlaying the fruit as well. Palate had a lovely mouthfeel. Full but not heavy, dense, and powerful. Acidity was not nearly as high as I would have expected or hoped. Finish was very long with dense tropical fruit.

As this aired out some acidity came to play. Kept half the bottle in the fridge and will report back on Day 2.

Quality is very high but not stylistically my preference. I prefer something a bit leaner with more cut. 91-92, drinking very well now. Certainly another 10 years ahead for those that liked aged whites.

Day 2: Similar notes, maybe some more acidity showing but not much. Good quality but not my preferred style (at least in this vintage). (340 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 10/7/2023 & rated 91 points: Berserker Offline (Mathilde Bistro - SF): A bit closed and oaky - should have revisited later in the night but didn't get a chance. A ton of stuffing underneath, wonderfully rich citrus and tropical fruit (kiwi? mango?), a bit of pastry cream, and juicy acid. Needs time for the oak to integrate. 91 for enjoyment now, probably add 2-3 in time. (439 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 10/7/2023 & rated 93 points: Loire Tasting (Mathilda Bistro, San Francisco): Classic Sauvignon Blanc nose with notes of chalk, lemon, peach, orange, and bright minerals. It feels just a tad riper than a well made Sancerre. Nice acidity on the palate with lemon notes, citrus zest, minerals, and bright fruit on the palate. Nice finish. A very good wine! Feels a bit like a hypothetical mix of Austrian SB and Sancerre... (666 views)
Tasted by ylkim30 on 10/7/2023: October 2023 Loire Dinner (Mathilde - SF): Surprisingly interesting despite being very rich and very Sauvignon Blanc. (159 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 10/7/2022 & rated 93 points: This wine needed a lot of air. It started out quite reserved and backwards and wasn’t showing much. With air, it gained weight, ripeness, and aroma, but remained balanced. Tropical fruit, citrus, peach, a bit of cream, and smoke on the nose. Rich mouthfeel, yet balanced by high acidity with more citrus notes on the palate. Long finish. A very good wine, despite the high ripeness. Could use another 5 years in the cellar to show everything. 93-94+ (826 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 2/19/2022 & rated 93 points: From a Coravin’d bottle back in September. Aromas of grapefruit, mineral, lemon and quince. Flavors of lemon, shortbread, mineral, quince and wet stone. Ends with a 30-35 second finish with stony mineral notes. First time I have felt like this is a dead ringer for white Bordeaux. Not sure what the grapefruit was on the nose because I have not gotten that on previous bottles. (633 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 9/4/2021 & rated 92 points: Aromas of nutmeg, citrus, mineral and smoke. Flavors of melon, smoke, guava, mineral and hint lime of lemon. Ends with a 30-35 second finish with mineral and smoke notes. (602 views)
Tasted by pkouchu on 2/1/2021 & rated 95 points: lemon cake, honeysuckle, citrus peel, toasted marzipan, guava, pears, crushed rock, mango and lychee.

the yellow fruit is slowly deepening in flavor, this has layers for days. arguably the best SB napa has to offer (851 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 7/17/2020: Pear, cat pee, green, white flower, vanilla, slight honey. Medium+ acidity. (841 views)
Tasted by Dionysusx on 1/26/2020 & rated 96 points: This wine starts with a light honey note, adds subtle citrus and spice flavors and then knocks your socks off with intense minerality, acidity, lemon, honey, apple and more spice. The finish is smooth and creamy. Phenomenal. (770 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 11/1/2019 & rated 94 points: A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Mostly blind, some double blind (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Medium expressive nose displaying fresh ripe white fruit with a hint of yellow, pear, kiwi, grapefruit, pina colada, oak and limestone. Excellent concentration, finely layered ripe yet pure white fruit, oily yet cool and pure, good acidity and mineral, and a medium to long sweet white fruit driven finish with a hint of oak at the end. Although ripe, it is retrained and shows nice balance. It is not showing much cat pee at the moment, but I suspect it will develop in a few years. Nice showing and very enjoyable. (1663 views)
Tasted by rlove on 5/18/2019 & rated 91 points: Weird mix here of ripe and underripe, perhaps from blended lots, with both orange peel and cat pee, alongside mixed florals, banana peel, and stone. The nose is pungent! Nice acidity is welcome but doubles down on an austere quality on the palate. Impressive concentration from the old vines. (876 views)
Tasted by NutmegNative on 5/17/2019 & rated 95 points: Tons of unctuous, oily mouth-feel, with tastes of melon, lemon, citrus peel flavors, with a hint of spice and oak. Depth of flavor that goes on and on. A very special sauvignon blanc from 70 year old vines. The only SB I've tasted that was even close to this wine was decades ago from Dry Creek vineyard. As stated elsewhere, this is a white wine for red wine aficionados. (675 views)
Tasted by jzebrack on 3/9/2019 & rated 93 points: Still holding up very well.
Unlike any California Sauv Blanc. it's just unique.
Very well balanced, not overly fruity.
A white wine that can be served to folks who ordinarily only drink Red's, and they will enjoy it. (632 views)
Tasted by rlove on 12/3/2018 & rated 92 points: Orange peel, melon, banana skin, and slate. Incredible concentration from the old vines, intense orchard fruit, saline finish. The 2014 I Block is a unique wine. (703 views)
Tasted by jzebrack on 6/5/2018 & rated 93 points: We were at a wine tasting in Austria, and we brought this bottle as an example of one of the better white wines from vines in Napa Valley (as opposed to the Russian River region). We think we proved our point. At the very least, it encouraged our host to dig a bit deeper into their Austrian wines. (723 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 8/20/2017 & rated 94 points: From the oldest Sauvignon Blanc grapes planted in North America. This is beautiful with no sight of grapefruit. So balanced and refreshing. Think this will improve with age. History says it will. (725 views)

Varietal Character

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
