Community Tasting Notes (average 93.4 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 118 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by weezie on 5/1/2024 & rated 94 points: Drank a glass via Coravin. Initially, even after 20-30 minutes of air, the oak was pretty intense and overall this felt a bit overpowering. But but the 60 minute mark it had mellowed meaningfully and was really beautiful. Fresh with layers of red and dark fruit juicy goodness. But this is not a fruit bomb. More like a high quality Cab Franc heavy Bordeaux. Tobacco, dark chocolate with floral notes. Still very big, and I suspect this will age for a decade or more. But with 60-90 minutes of air this is definitely a pleasure to drink today. 94 today with upside. (244 views)
Tasted by hadukla on 2/24/2024 & rated 93 points: really great but not sure it was worth that price? (731 views)
Tasted by j5614.person@gmail.com on 1/28/2024 & rated 95 points: Big red with raspberry, blackberry, and oak flavors. (830 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 1/12/2024 & rated 95 points: Rich, lush, dark fruits, balanced. Terrific! (887 views)
Tasted by Roughl on 6/2/2023 & rated 94 points: Fantastic ripe Cabernet franc showing a sense of place. Still enough fruit to support all the tobacco and herbs. Fresh and soft but intense and perfumed From magnum (1519 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 5/19/2023 & rated 91 points: J’étais en Rhône sud grenache. Mûr et assez frais, c’est savoureux, une pointe d’alcool. Quand même très bien. 91 pts (1585 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 2/19/2023 & rated 95 points: Another perfect bottle of my favorite Cabernet Franc.
No formal notes.
Dusty and green and spicy, with such fine fruit!
A quite big wine in this lovely vintage - very enjoyable.
Excellent! (297 views)
 Tasted by Raizes on 2/16/2023 & rated 91 points: 李子与黑樱桃的成熟果味,甘草、丁香,略有石墨和脂粉气息。复杂度不算非常突出,但已经熟化的单宁和良好的酸度让入口感觉非常圆润而多汁。香气慷慨开放,成熟而健康,风格沉稳而色彩明快,仿佛在诉说自己正在生涯的最佳阶段。 (1382 views)
Tasted by vintage_whine on 11/22/2022: Liquered cherry and black raspberry. Pronounced pyrazines and unabashed oak. Fuller bodied. Like a Bordeaux haut medoc from a warmer vintage. Maybe could use a bit more density of flavor on the palate. (1502 views)
Tasted by Jerseyjudge on 9/18/2022 & rated 90 points: Saturated cork which is common from this producer lately. Several hours in the decanter and still not much going on for me. Agree with the kind of “meh.” Hopefully it is just a phase and it needs more time. I’ve enjoyed the 2011 and 2012 much more. Cautiously optimistic things will eventually come around. (1668 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 9/11/2022 & rated 97 points: Medium purple color, with some garnet and just a touch of bricking towards the rim. Notes of dark plum, cassis, elderflowers, tobacco leaf, some flowery notes of violets, the oak has integrated beautifully, some graphite, smoke, also sweet spices. It‘s medium-full bodied, has great persistence and depth but it’s not heavy, has medium-high acidity providing excellent freshness and medium+ tannin that is super ripe but present and good quality. Very good length. A superb Paleo and as good as this gets. (1801 views)
Tasted by jamie.martin.external@gmail.co on 8/27/2022 & rated 97 points: Wow, could drink a gallon. Beautiful and more subtle than I expected (1382 views)
Tasted by Nontaco on 8/5/2022 & rated 92 points: Perfectly fine with an Italian meal but was hoping for more Cabernet goodness, more Macchiole deliciousness and more Tuscan pizazz. Sad to say the verdict is a “meh” (1328 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 5/20/2022 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 90 minutes and probably could have used more. (1536 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 5/6/2022 & rated 88 points: Dark fruit and dusty flavors. (1391 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 1/21/2022: Summary:
Piccolomini BDM was the best, Giodo/Macchiole/Sodi also delicious… Sodi continues to outperform it’s price. Flaccianello and Percarlo very tight and questionable even after a few days.

Cepparello: somewhere in the middle
Giodo BDM: well done, towards the top of the tasting
Piccolomini Santa Caterina BDM: best wine of the tasting, open for business, great fruit and finish.
Sodi: as always, a price performer and holds up to the more expensive wines. Some brett/earth with the very dark fruit profile, one of the better wines in the tasting
Percarlo: unyielding, tight, even after a few nights never opened up. Will it ever?
Macchiole Paleo: dark chocolate, delicious
Flaccianello: unyielding and tight, but unlike the Percarlo did open up somewhat night 2 & 3. Needs many years. (1780 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 11/27/2021 & rated 93 points: This was a fine companion to our Thanksgiving Day meal including the turkey. Lots of fruit and modest complexity. Decanted for at least 2 hours prior to drinking. It lasted well into Saturday in good shape. The cab. franc will fool no one that it's French! (1947 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 10/24/2021 & rated 94 points: Atlanta no-name Wine Tasting Group - Italy again.: Wine #5 in Blind Italian tasting (Italy ex. Barolo/Brunello)

Purple color (looked younger than 11 years old). Cinnamon, sweet cherry, baking spice and morello cherry on nose. Palate consistent with nose and noticeably more secondary notes than the '16 vintage. High acidity, integrated tannins and very, very long finish. Great wine. 94+

Wine of tasting. (2187 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 5/25/2021: Nanette, usually a Loire / Chinon fan when it comes to Cab Franc, really loved this with its warm tuscsan fruit, subtle polish, and lovely chalky tannins. Threw some floaty sediment so suggest standing upright a day in advance if you have the chance. Drinking great with an hour in a wide-based decanter. (2535 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 4/4/2021 & rated 94 points: Chocolate notes, oak, some red fruits also, nicely done modern style. (2558 views)
Tasted by kkshah on 1/26/2021 & rated 95 points: Wonderful. Dark chocolate and smoked oak. Will continue to age gracefully from here. (2563 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 10/11/2020 & rated 95 points: Still very young, needs a lot of time in the decanter. Just getting better and better. (3077 views)
Tasted by CGraves on 7/27/2020 & rated 93 points: In blind tasting W beef tenderloin and drinking nicely. (2889 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 5/27/2020 & rated 94 points: Ramat-Aviv Boys meeting (at my home): Medium purple color,
Pronounced aromas intensity of dark plum, tobacco, violets, espresso, dark chocolate, graphite, cassis, dark cherries, smoke, sweet spices.
Dry, high acidity, high ripe tannins, high abv, medium-full bodied,
excellent freshness, long finish;
A superb Paleo and this is just getting better and better over the years... still young at this stage (3388 views)
Tasted by Ricky99 on 5/18/2020 & rated 94 points: best of all the bottles opened.. stood up beside simple char grilled strip steaks ...velvet texture, fine tanins with all that warm, sun, italian fuit... (2706 views)

A beacon of fine wine production in Bolgheri, today recognized as one of Italy’s most important wine regions, the history of Le Macchiole began in 1983 when Eugenio Campolmi, a native Bolgherese, purchased his first vineyard. Together with his wife, Cinzia Merli, Eugenio began his pursuit, based on the philosophy of experimentation, planting many different varietals (Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah…) to discover those best adapted to the microclimate and particular soil of this region along the Etruscan coast, nestled between the Bolgheri hills and the sea.

Beginning with just a few hectares, little by little the estate grew, the winery was built, and in 1991, winemaker Luca d’Attoma joined Le Macchiole, sharing a common goal: to produce an original, perhaps unexpected, wine capable of expressing and celebrating the characteristics of the territory. The winery focused on achieving the purest expression of individual varieties, such as Cabernet Franc and Syrah, atypical at the time in an area predominantly known for its Bordeaux style blends. With its distinct wines and unprecedented quality, Le Macchiole soon joined Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Guado al Tasso as one of the most prestigious estates in Bolgheri. Following Eugenio’s death in 2002, Cinzia took over the reins, moving forward with passion and dedication.

Working closely with a carefully selected team in the winery and the vineyards, Le Macchiole has always been at the forefront of innovation, applying methods including extremely low yields, high density planting, specially designed cement fermentation tanks in the cellar, and since 2002, the implementation of organic farming practices, with the sole objective of strengthening the vine. The winery continues to produce what are internationally recognized as some of Tuscany’s finest wines, confirmed by the numerous accolades received in Italy and abroad, including the Wine Spectator’s prestigious 100-point score a few years ago for the 2004 Messorio.

Today Le Macchiole produces 5 wines: Paleo Rosso (Cabernet Franc), Messorio (Merlot), Scrio (Syrah), Bolgheri Rosso (Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah) and Paleo Bianco (Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc), each with its own personality, an expression of the soil and result of the respect given to the vineyard.

“It is essential to first find balance in the vineyard, only then can we find balance in the wine.”
– Cinzia Merli

2010 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso

From producer website:

The year was marked by a late growth cycle, due to a cold and rainy spring, which forced us to postpone harvesting. We focused on helping the vine concentrate on ripening the fruit and on the practices intended to lighten the foliage and allow for more air circulation to reach the grapes. The good weather at the end of the season contributed to the production of grapes in excellent conditions with the right amount of polyphenols, sugar, acidity and aromas. The high day/night temperature range in late August and September helped the grapes preserve all their typical aromas and made the wines acquire good aromatic complexity. The wines appear to be fresher, with a lower alcoholic content compared to the past vintages. Both whites and reds display marked mineral notes, powerful aromas and a good tannic structure supported by excellent acidity.
