Community Tasting Notes (average 93 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 53 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Rani on 1/25/2024 & rated 93 points: Tasted blind. Unbelievably this is young! Tannins were kicking so we decanted for an hour. Earthy, notes of sour plums, miso, and red cherries. In the palate very fine but gripping dry tannins, ample acidity and great length. It would improve over the five years at least. I can even imagine what the VV cuvée would be like. (514 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 8/18/2023: Decanted at 3 pm an drunk from 7.30 or so. Silky. elegant and fragrant, but not really exciting. Absurdly enough I actually preferred the glass I had when decanting, with its extremely fine-grained sediment that gave it a sort of texture supplementing the smoothness of the aged wine. Still I love this kind of human scale nebbiolo. It is, however, too tannic to really compare with pinot noir. I think I would try without decanting for my last bottle. (591 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 5/18/2023 & rated 96 points: Roagna Barbaresco Asili 2004.
My gadd dette er sexy!
Høy intensitet med en guddommelig parfyme.
Blomster, spice and everything nice.
Roagna leverer helt vilt bra her! 96p+ (871 views)
Tasted by palbe on 3/12/2023 & rated 91 points: Deep brick red. Dark, slightly dry cherries, herbs, some earth. Nicely balanced, still good fruit and an enticing dryness on the back end. Very enjoyable. (823 views)
Tasted by kfinsrud on 10/30/2022 flawed bottle: Dessverre ikke helt i orden denne. Noe "mousiness" som i en funky Beaujolais. Blir ikke borte med luft. NR (1193 views)
Tasted by LWI on 10/11/2022 & rated 91 points: A bit volatile and advanced. Became sweeter and rounder with air. (1088 views)
Tasted by Larre on 10/7/2022 & rated 94 points: Tasted along with Montefico ´04. The fruit in the Asili was more dense and showed also a bit higher freshness. On the other hand, it seemed less evolved. Liked it a lot! 94 (862 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 8/28/2022: After four hours the last half glass was incredibly fragrant and beautiful, with velvet tannins and the finest texture. Excellent now. (868 views)
Tasted by …. on 5/20/2021 & rated 94 points: Compared to my last bottle a year plus ago, the acidity clearly has become more integrated, which really turns the balance up a notch. Menthol and a hint of leather can be added as well. I’m gonna have to raise the rating to a very solid 94. Lovely wine, right in the middle of the drinking window. (1757 views)
Tasted by ahagen on 1/27/2020 & rated 94 points: Klart bedre enn PdBs Asili samme årgang. (1934 views)
Tasted by …. on 1/25/2020 & rated 93 points: Great wine, right in the middle of the drinking window. Beautiful nose with flowers and mature fruit. The tannins and acidity is medium+. It delivers dark cherries, blackberries, maybe a little plum and some mineral tones. The balance is generally good but the level of acidity affects it in a negative way. A solid 93 nonetheless, with the potential for a higher rating in the future, if the acidity becomes slightly more integrated in the overall expression. (1679 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 11/24/2019: Decanted three hours, which might have been too much - I actually preferred the first taste when decanting. Dark, fragrant, complex - just a fine wine, but could have done with a little tang. (1716 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 9/15/2019 & rated 95 points: Shows a complete bouquet of mature aromas, yet still has that excellent freshness and integrity of fruit. On the palate silky and seamless - an extended caress in laid-back harmony. The promises from ten years ago finally fulfilled. Smack in the middle of its drinking window. (2644 views)
Tasted by Larre on 6/15/2019 & rated 95 points: Great character and in a nice drinking window! 95+ (1524 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 12/2/2018 & rated 94 points: Wow - dette er bra!
Fantastisk vin med helt rene toner.
Elegant og powerful med perfekt moden frukt.
Dette er midt i smørøyet nå, men vil holde lenge.
Lang sømløs finish med lekre fine tanniner.
Fantastisk vin. 94p+ (1871 views)
Tasted by KimHartman on 4/28/2018 & rated 94 points: This has some nice development. Super delicious, especially the nose which is totally "wow" with all the flowers and red fruits. (2177 views)
Tasted by RonniePiemonte on 3/1/2018 & rated 92 points: silky smooth with a great flavor profile. needed a little time to open up. (2128 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 12/31/2017: Transparent but fairly dark for a nebbiolo. Fabulous floral nose with notes of tar, licorice, spices and dust. The taste shows some volatile acidity but the initially fierce tannins work well with food. Otherwise quite supple, no blockbuster. Fine to drink now, I think. (1864 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 10/14/2017 & rated 91 points: Incredible nose: volatile, with adhesive, nailpolish, pine, tobacco leaf, loads of cherries and menthol. However, the palate does not live up to the lewd promise of these first impressions. There is a slight murky note that makes me think this might be a suboptimal bottle. Also the tannins are still quite harsh and get in the way of the whole picture. Nonetheless a very enjoyable experience but not what I was hoping for after the first sniff. But that bouquet...  Tasted by Larre on 10/7/2017 & rated 93 points: Elegant and traditional Barbaresco that is starting to show some of its potential. I think this wine will improve with further 5-10 years of cellaring. Looking forward to the next bottle in 2022! (1770 views)
Tasted by Tavastgatan on 9/2/2017 & rated 93 points: Yeah, this is in a perfect spot now 13 years down the road. Unfortunately, this was the my last bottle. When they're ready they're gone... (1773 views)
Tasted by guitarkim on 8/15/2015 & rated 94 points: Roagna Barbaresco Asili 2004
App: light brick-red
Aroma: Classic nebbiolo nose with cherries, dried roses, licorice, tar and earth.
Full-bodied-, concentrated and well structured. Excellent acidity and firm tannins
Excellent length.
94p

Decant minimum 4 hours.

Drinking nicely now with long decant, but will keep for many years. (2894 views)
Tasted by MWiking on 6/12/2015 & rated 94 points: Kan inte riktigt läsa mina anteckningarna från igår men detta vin var riktigt bra, ungt och jag gissade på scavino 99, det är väldigt strävt och har nog framtiden för sig.
94+ (2996 views)
Tasted by Patrik H on 6/11/2015 & rated 94 points: On the nose, bear adhesive, stable, sadle, dust, violets and a hint of acetone
On the palate, blueberries, mineral, licorice, some leather tones. There has been oak that is revealed by the vanilla tone. But there is also power in the bottle and the tannins will be more integrated over time.
Long finish (2770 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 6/11/2015 & rated 93 points: Floral nose, showing red flowers, perfume and minerals, with oak present, vanilla and raspberries, feminine and Barbaresco typical.
Palate shows light and airy fragrances, raspberries, strawberries, silky ripe fruit with high acidity, minerals and transparency.
Very typical for a top Barbaresco, with fine tannins, and a feminine profile.
A very fine young wine indeed.

Roagna

Producer website

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
