Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 103 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rustyRudy on 11/18/2018 flawed bottle: Previously Coravined, now prunes, tobacco, earthy, did not keep well (1607 views)
Tasted by ScottGoodwin on 10/1/2015 & rated 88 points: Crushed black berries. Stone dust. Cocoa/chocolate powder. Hint of heat on the nose. Seems to have shed a little fat. Palate is still substantive without being jammy or heavy. Not a knock out but a pretty nice 8 year old, $15 wine. (2962 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 2/11/2015 & rated 90 points: Dark purple. Cigar box, stones and black fruit with tobacco, ripe black cherry, and plum flavors. Has evolved over the last three years. Less up front fruit and more savory flavors. (3342 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 11/6/2014 & rated 87 points: Dark red, grilled meat and black fruit on the nose, starting to lose some of its earlier fruity charm, still nice but I liked it better when it was younger (3473 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 3/9/2014 & rated 88 points: Came off fairly fruit-forward; dark berries & black fruit on the nose with a whiff of smoke. Flavors carry through with good weight on the palate, and the back end shows little olive & herb note.

Improved with a couple hours in the decanter, though I would drink sooner than later (next year or two). (3872 views)
Tasted by JavaMonkey on 12/23/2013 & rated 92 points: Like the first bottle: Dark purple-red. Big fruit on the nose, blackberry, plum, smoke. Seems better integrated and balanced than the last bottle. The fruit is backed by some herbal notes, and there's good backbone. Really delicious. (3288 views)
Tasted by Saint Stephen on 11/16/2013 & rated 85 points: I've drunk through almost a case of this - it was a good value I suppose but after 6 years I would have expected it to settle down a bit. Wishful thinking. There's a lot here, and some people will be impressed by that. But to me it's big, somewhat astringent and especially hot. Quite extracted but in the end not all that enjoyable. (2005 views)
Tasted by Dickydick on 6/1/2013: Het blijft een geweldig mooie wijn, die voor mij nog beter is geworden met een geweldige afdronk en prachtige balans (2328 views)
Tasted by JavaMonkey on 5/28/2013 & rated 92 points: Better than the last bottle. Dark purple-red. Big fruit on the nose, blackberry, plum, smoke. Seems better integrated and balanced than the last bottle. The fruit is backed by some herbal notes, and there's good backbone. Really delicious. (2240 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/7/2013 & rated 89 points: Monthly tasting club LTC 2013-03; French or not French? (@ My place): Blood red with high viscosity. In the bouquet ripe red as well as black berry fruits and cherries as well as herbs and spices. In the mouth a sweet start, a bit dusty, red and black berry fruits again, spiciness and good acidity. The mild tannin is well hidden. Nice and juicy wine. (1378 views)
Tasted by JavaMonkey on 12/16/2012 & rated 90 points: Really excellent. Dark purple color. Dark nose with plum, smoke, and a little herbal quality. Full palate, lots of dark fruit. Has some interesting herbal characteristics going on on the palate as well. Great structure, still very firm. Delicious finish. (2183 views)
Tasted by wurzel68 on 9/29/2012 & rated 90 points: Weiterhin frisch-würziger CdR mit Kirschfrucht, Nelken- und Röstnoten, die Kräuter sind etwas in den Hintergrund getreten; am Gaumen mit viel Pfeffer und Würznoten, weiter straffe, saftige Säure, guter Abgang, leicht zehrend (2251 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 9/25/2012 & rated 88 points: No formal notes; see previous notes. (1117 views)
Tasted by wurzel68 on 4/1/2012 & rated 91 points: Würzige Nase mit viel Pfeffer und Garriguearomen, saftiger Kirsch- und Beerenfrucht, leichte Röstnoten, duftig-frische Noten; am Gaumen saftiger, expressiver Wein mit viel Pfeffer, weichen Tanninen, gutem Säurerückgrat und langem Abgang. (2530 views)
Tasted by Dar3 on 12/17/2011 & rated 90 points: 90+. Really solid CdR. I think I liked the Maximilien cuvee a little bit better, but this has a more typical CdR flavor profile, more fruit, very smooth, and is drinking very well right now. One of the best CdR's I've had, although the finish is short (3068 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 7/5/2011 flawed bottle: Quite Hot&alcoholic on the finish. Perhaps storage was an issue for this bottle. (3742 views)
Tasted by isbjoern on 5/20/2011 & rated 88 points: Warm nose with stewed red and black fruits, plums, some licorice. Expressive palate with soft tannins, sweet alcohol, milk like texture, black cherry, blackberries and cassis, dark licorice, pepper and strong herbal garrigue flavors. Very pure Rhône expression. Good wine and great value. - 88 points (3610 views)
Tasted by z_willus_d on 5/14/2011: PnP to glass w/out decant. Dark, purple color - serious looking CdR. The notes in the first half of ChrisR's Jan'11 note do well to capture the essence. Perhaps a bit sur maturite with some semblance of a raisined quality to the fruit. Otherwise... some alcohol burn ringing my tonsils. Dark fruited and very ripe -- pushing the bounds of OTT for me. But there is a lot pleasure to be had in this bottle with little need to wait or fool around with much aeration (in fact that might hurt). This is not unlike so many of its upper-crust CnP peers from the vintage. I wonder how and when this one will fall apart. Hot as it is, I shan't drink nary a third the bottle tonight (with a cold), and I fear my palate derived pleasure may suffer some vitiation of the remainder wine come morrow. Tonight, this drinks in the upper 80's range by my mark. (4136 views)
Tasted by rb6p on 1/25/2011 & rated 92 points: My favorite of the excellent line up of 2007 grands bois. (4638 views)
Tasted by ChrisR on 1/22/2011 & rated 92 points: Wonderful rhone typicity. Warm fruits - blackberry, plum and raspberry - provencal herbs, earth, smoky meats. No hard edges anywhere, lovely texture and balance. I thought I had grabbed (and had intended to grab) a higher end CNdP, and totally enjoyed the pleasures the wine gave. It wasn't until the next day that I noticed I had drunk this particular CdR. It had lost the primary "frutiness" that had dominated earlier and had rounded into an excellent wine. (4304 views)
Tasted by Lessthanzero on 12/17/2010 & rated 88 points: A bit of a mess compared to earlier bottles. (4303 views)
Tasted by NCO on 11/26/2010: Dit weekend de Philippine 2007 gedronken en mixed feelings...
(4424 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 9/21/2010: unfortunately I froze this but it recovered OK (4863 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 8/29/2010 flawed bottle: corked (4892 views)

Domaine les Grands Bois

Producer website

Marc Besnardeau is from Paris originally and before he met Mireille Farjon, he was a sommelier at one of the better restaurants in Paris (in the Montmartre section). In marrying her he not only moved, but also made the complete change from the city life to the life of a vigneron. His fine palate as a sommelier, however, put him in good stead for evaluating wine and making his own. He knew, for example, that when he bought wines, to look for those with low yields and concentration and sought out the examples that were bottled unfiltered. He now has the opportunity to put these views into practice. The domaine that Marc Besnardeau has taken over is very well situated between St. Cecile and Cairanne. From these vines he produces several cuvees. The Cotes du Rhone that we get from him is our selection, about two-thirds Grenache, one-third Syrah, though this varies slightly form vintage to vintage, but is always bottled unfiltered. The Cotes du Rhone Villages cuvee we generally favor is Cuvee Gabrielle named after one of their three daughters. This cuvee is about half Grenache the balance principally Syrah and Mourvedre and is aged for a short time in barrique. Marc also has recently acquired a parcel in Cairanne that is a great example of one of the best value appellations in France. All of his wines are deeply colored, ripe, robust and while one can think of many flavors to describe them, the word delicious pretty much says it all.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

Côtes du Rhône Villages

Côtes-du-Rhône Villages is a French wine Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in the southern Rhône wine region of France. Red, white and rosé wine are all produced within the appellation. The quality is superior to the generic Côtes-du-Rhône AOC, but below more specific appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC and Vacqueyras AOC. Côtes-du-Rhône Villages is the second largest appellation in the Rhône, only surpassed in size by Côtes-du-Rhône AOC.
