Community Tasting Notes (average 84.9 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ddingley on 3/11/2015 & rated 86 points: Pretty good age-r as this was still balanced and in good shape. The caramel color forewarns of a slightly sweet wine with melon and a rocky aftertaste. A little thin but not bad. (1449 views)
Tasted by rbergy on 6/9/2012 & rated 84 points: Great nose, but past prime when drinking, fruit is taken over by tart finish (2414 views)
Tasted by azwino on 2/19/2012 & rated 85 points: Past prime. Dark, touch of honey. No acidity, no zing. Bland. (2371 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 6/8/2010 & rated 89 points: Excellent color, bouquet and mouth feel. You do not feel the alcohol heat a bit (14.5%)! Very well made. The only area it falls short is the delicious factor. A bit dry and low acidity -bland?- for the variety. (2976 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 12/11/2009 flawed bottle: Possibly cooked? Much younger and darker than most of the Gewurz with an unusual resiny, over-extracted tea odor. Dumped. (3150 views)
Tasted by tzelmer on 11/27/2009 & rated 89 points: Dark straw color, very vibrant in the glass. Orange peel, rose petal, white peach aromas. Blood orange, grapefruit, pear, slight smokiness, medium acidity, a bit closed but the acidity kicks in a bit after it warms up. Still a bit soft on the finish, not the best vintage for this wine but solid and interesting, not a great value. (2019 views)
Tasted by hutch on 5/15/2009 & rated 87 points: 5/15/09: A little disapointed with this now that I have more time with it. Rich golden color. Very rich, with a disturbing low level of acidity. Touches of smoke. It's just too rich, with nothing keeping it buoyant. 86-87

4/6/09: Rich, full aromatics, very pleasant. The palate is rich as well. Would have like a touch more acidity. But lots of rich flavors in here. 88ish (1726 views)
Tasted by ELH on 2/21/2009 & rated 87 points: Workman like Gewurtz. Pleasant balance of peppery and sweet. Short, somewhat lackluster finish. Day old leftovers flat and unexciting. (1823 views)
Tasted by ChickadeeSharon on 2/19/2009 & rated 90 points: Very deep golden color, almost orange, initial frizzante, lychee & flowers & plastic? on nose, full-bodied white, 14.5% ABV - potent, some butteryness & grapefuit on finish, a big wine (2443 views)
Tasted by Bacchant on 10/4/2008 & rated 89 points: A dark-golden, almost almond color. Rich & clean nose of freshly cut flowers, sliced pear, & spicy orange marmalade. The full bodied palate shows a bit of spritz on the front, along with some slightly bitter orange peel [a note which might be confused with pepper]. Something of a hole in the middle subsides as it warms. Retains floral characteristics on the finish, but is neither particularly sweet nor acidic. Balanced, I guess, but certainly less vibrant than I'd hoped. [14.5% abv.; $28]. (1741 views)
Tasted by ELH on 8/10/2008 & rated 87 points: Nice peppery Gewurtz effect. Dry, much drier than 2004 vintage which has an underlying sweetness. Personally prefer the 2004 version. (1865 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 7/15/2008 & rated 89 points: Light medium orange color; lovely, tart lychel, navel orange skin nose; tart lychee, spicy orange, orange peel palate; medium finish (1171 views)
Tasted by manonthemoon on 6/8/2008 & rated 88 points: Nose was great, loved the very floral citrus mix, definately the high point of the wine. Palate I get citrus, perfume, and honey that lead to great acidity on the finish. This is close if not a full bodied white that even with the acidity is too much for me. This is not my type of gew, even if I love the nose and for >$20 this will not be a repeat. (2019 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 4/5/2008: Saturday tasting at Chapel Hill Wine Company. Very Gewurz on the nose. Strong sense of grapefruits. Slightly hot and a little drier than I think it should be for balance. Again, is it just this bottle? Is it the comparison to the 2 2005 bottles on the table? Not rated. (2006 views)

Zind-Humbrecht

Producer website
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is one of the stars of the Alsace, in the northeastern corner of France. Fought over for decades by Germany and France, the region, according to Robert M. Parker Jr., “is perhaps the most underrated and underutilized source of great white wines in the world.” Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by Leonard Humbrecht and Genevieve Zind. Their son Olivier is now instrumental in running the 99-acre estate, which the family still owns. Like many Alsatian producers, Zind-Humbrecht makes white wines in varying degrees of sweetness, from dessert whites to very dry wines. The vineyards are planted to 30% Riesling, 30% Gewurztraminer, 29% Pinot Gris, and smaller amounts of Pinot Noir, Muscat, Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc. Up to 18,000 cases are produced annually. Many are Grand Crus and single vineyard bottlings.
