Tasted by shaffej on 1/28/2014 & rated 90 points: For a $14 Zin it's great QPR. Well balanced, nice body, a bit of spice but overall seems lacking in the depth of fruit. Def stands up to a strong marinara sauce or spice rubbed pork loin. (2643 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 9/21/2013 & rated 89 points: This was my last bottle, and it finally seems to be headed downhill. It's still very good, but it's time to drink up. (2854 views)
Tasted by CBJB on 7/12/2013 & rated 89 points: Wow! What a pleasant surprise. We love Dry Creek zins but were not familiar with this producer. The Dry Creek grapes are put to good use here.

PnP. A bit of fruit on the nose. Not the big fruit bomb you get sometimes with Sonoma zins. Medium body and nicely integrated. Smooth finish with just a hint of cedar and spice. (2903 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 5/26/2013 & rated 90 points: Last night, I had two highly-regarded 2007 zinfandels, both of which cost more than twice what I paid for the Bradford Mountain. Both of them seemed a little tired, but this one is just now hitting its stride. It still has hints of tar and licorice, but the berries and spices dominate. Terrific nose, medium body and a fairly lengthy finish. In no danger of going downhill anytime soon. (3016 views)
Tasted by shaffej on 5/12/2013 & rated 88 points: This wine has an interesting sweetness to it which I haven't seen in a zin. Not unpleasant but different with cassis like flavors. Well balanced but not with a spicy edge. (2994 views)
Tasted by BuffaloLou on 3/25/2013 & rated 88 points: Much like the first bottle. This wine is more the feminine side of Zin, versus the powerful, in-your-face masculine Zins. (1128 views)
Tasted by BuffaloLou on 4/18/2012 & rated 89 points: C: Ruby
N: licorice, cocoa, vanilla, intense blackberry
P: Like the nose, blackberry, licorice and cocoa, plus spice. Nice amount of acid makes it food friendly.
F: medium

Nice wine. Good value for <$14. (1758 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 12/4/2011 & rated 89 points: A nose of dark cherry and spice, dark garnet in color. A full bodied and smooth Zin, with black cherry, plum, blackberry jam, spice on finish, solid, a very good QPR. (2465 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 10/30/2011 & rated 88 points: Downgraded slightly compared to a bottle I had almost a year ago. The berries, licorice, tar, and cocoa have subsided a little, but the tannins sure have not. It also seems a little leaner now. Obviously not as well balanced as in late 2010, but that doesn't mean it won't rebalance itself, much like my 401K - hopefully with better results. Nevertheless, I'm waiting AT LEAST another year before trying another one. (2551 views)
Tasted by arthrovine on 6/12/2011: not my style - seems more paso robles-esque then classic dry creek. Am donating the rest of mine (3176 views)
Tasted by kahuna75 on 6/12/2011 & rated 88 points: major difference from the last bottle I had- though I was not planning on opening for a few more months ...Wife grabbed and opened this- poured my glass and left it for an hour and it really drank well- no doubt this can use more time sideways or more time in a decanter- Fruit was forward but not too big and was dominated by blue/purple fruit- the alcohol still showed through along with a firm tannin. (3401 views)
Tasted by Sonoma Style on 1/23/2011 & rated 89 points: Wine Spectator spot on with this rating. Great value! One of my favorites from WTSO! Buy it every time it is offered! Fruit forward, mild alcohol, smooth finish. (3425 views)
Tasted by bfmiller on 1/17/2011 & rated 90 points: Decanted out of the bottle with a Vinturi. We were instantly pleased. It had been a while since I drank a Zin and I remembered how easy they are to drink. Not overly complex, but fruit forward like a new world shiraz. (3664 views)
Tasted by Sonoma Style on 1/7/2011 & rated 88 points: Great everyday wine with no decanting needed. Nice fruit forward Zin with smooth finish. Deep Red color made it even more appetizing! Great with Peanut M&M's! (3615 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 12/19/2010 & rated 90 points: Having read others' tasting notes, I used a newly-acquired "Vinturi" to aerate the wine. Straight out of the bottle, it was so tannic it was almost undrinkable. With aeration, however, it was terrific. Blueberries on the nose. Blueberries, a little tar, a little licorice, and a little cocoa on the palate. Surprisingly plush texture and a long smooth finish. No sweetness, no raisins, and a lot of depth. Given the tannins, this one should last for several years. (3731 views)
Tasted by apspr on 12/15/2010 & rated 88 points: Very nice -- still quite tannic for a zin so a decant or more cellar time is strongly recommended. Improved over 2 hours but I will splash decant the next bottle. Lots of dark berries, a little spice, lavender and floral notes. I'll add to the note if there's been any change on Day 2 (3820 views)
Tasted by kahuna75 on 11/20/2010: Not scoring because it is not ready to drink- if you are having this give it a 2 hour decant- extremely disjounted as a pop and pour but came together nicely after a few hours- I dont think this will turn into anything stellar but with some time to come together in a year or so it may get to that 89-90 point area- holding my other 2 until this time 2011 next year (4018 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 10/31/2010 & rated 85 points: The best of my four bottles, with more fruit peeping out. Still, not anything I would repurchase... but this went well with ribs. Perhaps this needed to settle down some? (4365 views)
Tasted by chadrich on 10/28/2010 & rated 89 points: A little mustiness but blows off quickly, revealing blackberry, cinnamon and a hint of vanilla. Smooth and lush mouthfeel. Palate of currants, licorice, tar and black cherries with a faint menthol note. Balanced without overwhelming acids or tannins. Finish is a bit tart and has a short residual alcohol burn. (4639 views)
Tasted by wp888 on 10/27/2010 & rated 85 points: Great jammy fruit, I just found it to be a bit hot and disjointed. Could improve considerably with some age. (5106 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 10/18/2010 & rated 83 points: Simple, generic tasting Zin. Seems to lack zip and freshness, with the vanilla component a bit too prominent. (4834 views)
Tasted by BoilerLax on 10/17/2010 & rated 87 points: Tight even after running through and aerator and decanting for 20+ minutes. Nose was concentrated plum, blueberry, and currant mixed with cassis. Some mild aromas of forest floor and peat. Initial taste was just narrow, tight and short. Nice velvety texture, but the complexity was struggling to get out. Decided to let this sit for an hour. Re-approaching this an hour later made me think that this was a completely different wine. The overly fruity nature subsided, great notes of leather, tar, cocoa, and notes of dark berry. Smooth finish and was decently balanced, but needs more time in the cellar. I can only see this getting better with additional cellaring. (5069 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 10/17/2010 & rated 83 points: Spending more time with this wine, I am less critical than my last bottle. The wine does seem to come together a bit with air. Still... a bit generic-tasting. (4604 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 10/12/2010 & rated 79 points: Arrgh... I'm tired of Zins that are ripe, sweet and taste more of vanilla than fruit. This got better with some air and perhaps I am a bit harsh... but this needs more freshness and zest. (4657 views)

Zinfandel

ZAP: Zinfandel Advocates & Producers | Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wikipedia-Zinfandel

Grist Vineyard

Originally settled by an Italian family in the late 1800s, Grist Vineyard is now owned by Sonoma County’s Hambrecht family. This Dry Creek Valley property is on the northwestern slope of Bradford Mountain at an elevation of 1,000 feet. The volcanic, red soils — Boomer loam and Stonyford loam — are reminiscent of Tuscany’s terra rosa. We source Zinfandel fruit from 30 of the 51 total acres, which were planted in 1974. Though there is some debate, the Zinfandel vines are thought to be from the “mother” blocks planted in 1900, the Hambrecht/Mead Atlas Peak clones.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
