Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 4 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by David Paris (dbp) on 10/20/2011 & rated 87 points: Barbaresco at WWS: Very fruity and soft aromas, almost candied in nature. Forward in a very unstructured kind of way. The soft fruit carries onto the palate which is lightly tannic, bitter, quite light, and generic. Slightly grippy on the finish, but really not much in the way of complexity or interest. Puckering flavors. Mild, and non-offensive (unlike some of the Barbarescos to follow), just light and flabby. (1822 views)
Tasted by gripNsip on 10/20/2011 & rated 85 points: Smells of cherry cola, light floral notes, pumice and something astringent, like cleaning chemicals. It's not particularly unpleasant but it's not interesting. The palate is very dry and makes the mouth pucker. Bright fresh cherries show first. As the structure takes over some wood and dirt road show on the finish. Strong acidity, firm tannins that have a nice feel. Overall it's pleasing wine, I just didn't find it that interesting.  Tasted by WWSGURU on 8/25/2011 & rated 92 points: Great - now coming around and opening up into a wonderful Barbaresco (1558 views)
Tasted by wiskytango on 9/24/2007: Did not show many traditional nebbiolo qualities. It did however have nice acidity. It was a decent bottle of wine, just not what I was hoping for. It did improve greatly after an hour... but again, not a traditional piedmonte wine IMO. Not sure how to rate it actually. Average-79pts. (1394 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
