Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 53 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by oldwines on 5/24/2013 & rated 94 points: Beautiful deep rich golden color. Nose of tropical fruits, lemons and light toasted hazelnuts. Gorgeous rich mouthfeel with round flavors of pineapple, lemony coconut and papaya with the nuttiness that balances it and a hint of vanilla. Bright acidity keeps it lively for several hours. I wish this wasn't my last bottle! (5731 views)
Tasted by fredb on 8/20/2012: Initial color is medium yellow-gold, but it quickly deepens in the glass. Aromas of ripe pineapple, butterscotch, and lemon custard. Palate has lemon, cream, butterscotch, and nutty oxidative notes prevading. The finish is long and oxidized. This vintage seemed to age more quickly than past vintages of this flagship. Drink up. (6221 views)
Tasted by Mark Larson on 3/19/2012 & rated 91 points: My last two experiences were a bit underwhelming for this but this last, fourth bottle was excellent to outstanding. A bit heavy, almost ponderous, this wine is full bodied and flavorful with strong hazelnut overtones. Classic
California Chardonnay in a good way, it was even more expressive on day 2. I think this was at peak 2 years ago, but at 8 1/2 years it is very impressive for Chardonnay. (6525 views)
Tasted by danski on 2/15/2012 & rated 91 points: Pours like oil, in a good way. Still some acidity, and a lot of caramel and toasty flavors. Medium finish. Will need to drink up my remaining 2003s this year. (6830 views)
Tasted by fredb on 12/28/2011: Medium gold color. Aromas of butterscotch, lemon, and ripe pear. Flavors of vanilla, butterscotch, ripe pineapple, pear, and yellow apple. There is a nut oil element that emerges with airtime and this is teetering on too little acidity to keep it all together, but seems to stay on the right side of the equation to keep it enjoyable. Drink. (6555 views)
Tasted by Mark Larson on 11/23/2011 flawed bottle: Corked? Had some good qualities but? I'll check tomorrow. Second day confirms. Pity. (2222 views)
Tasted by Mark Larson on 10/7/2011 & rated 92 points: A bit more evolved than the last bottle. Not sure this has much more life. (1930 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 11/6/2010 & rated 91 points: CellarTracker Texas Offline II - Part Three (McKinney Performing Arts Center, McKinney, Texas): Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of vanilla, cream, hazelnut and talc. Flavors of cream, vanilla and yellow pears. Medium acidity, medium body. Drink now. 91+/92-? (3390 views)
Tasted by petitblanc on 11/6/2010 & rated 86 points: CT Texas Offline #2; 11/5/2010-11/6/2010 (McKinney, TX): Butterscotch, sweet oak, very little chardonnay character. (3795 views)
Tasted by GalvezGuy on 11/6/2010 & rated 91 points: CT Texas Offline #2 Oskiwawa Raises The Bar; 11/5/2010-11/6/2010 (McKinney, TX): Great golden color. Nose of butterscotch, baked apple, spice, fig, pears. On the palate, baked apple, toffee, spice, mineral. Finished with nice acidity to balance the sweetness. Very good with food. (3799 views)
Tasted by fredb on 11/1/2010: Gold color with hints of amber. Aromas of pineapple, butterscotch, and lemon. On the palate, this shows a bit of orange peel, a hint of almond, and a lemon oil and butterscotch core. This is past prime for me and it is time to drink up. Drink. (2933 views)
Tasted by fredb on 9/13/2010: Medium gold color, with amber notes. Aromas of orange peel, butterscotch, and varnish. On the palate, this shows oxidation with browned butter, orange, and a hint of sherry. With that, comes a butterscotch core and some acid structure, but this is a disappointment for Mount Eden at 7 years from the vintage. Drink up. (3059 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 8/6/2010: Dark straw toward gold colour. The nose is not nearly as lively as this once was, with secondary aromas taking the fore. Butterscotch, baked apples and baking spices. The fruit is fading but still has another year or two of very solid enjoyment. Nicely proportioned and textured, this is all held together by a lovely acid core. Minerals and a bit of saline circle at a distance. A clean expression of the varietal with just the right amount of body and r/s for when I'm in the mood for a Cali Chard. Interestingly, the abv was not listed on either the front or back label. I'm guessing it was 14%. (3206 views)
Tasted by elamasters on 8/1/2010 & rated 92 points: This is really nice right now. An interesting deep golden-green color. Smells of hazelnet, apple pie, and butterscotch. Really nice rich mouthfeel, with no rough edges. Flavors mirror the scents, very reminiscent of baked apples. No overtly oxidized scents or tastes. (3080 views)
Tasted by silverhalide on 7/10/2010 & rated 92 points: Still a great California Chardonnay. Deep yellow color and a fragrant nose. (3089 views)
Tasted by brich on 6/25/2010 & rated 91 points: Still drinks well, although I think it is getting a little long in the tooth. The color surprised a couple of guests but it is balanced and buttery overall. Not over-oaked. (3104 views)
Tasted by Mark Larson on 4/15/2010 & rated 93 points: Deep yellow color belies the fact this has plenty of life left. A beautiful expression of Chardonnay. (3227 views)
Tasted by brich on 1/17/2010 & rated 93 points: As always, terrific chard with nice oak. Golden yellow color says it all. (3278 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 12/13/2009 & rated 89 points: Great CA chard, 1st of 2 bottles of the '03 with 4 bottles '06 still left drank earlier tonight with Kim at the Melting Pot fondue restaurant in the University area of Charlotte, drank immediately after purchase. Chilled, popped, poured. Too expensive to be a reasonable QPR but definitely recommend this wine. Pale straw, clear, good mouth feel, very well balanced with oak and butter present but also citrus and minerals cutting through. Nose of citrus and caramelized sugar, primary flavors of burnt oak, some butter, underlying minerally grit and balanced citrus. This wine has enough structure for a few years of cellaring. (Edited 1/29/2010 to reflect correct vintage, originally mis-labeled this as an '06 vintage) (3312 views)
Tasted by K_F_o_l_e_y on 9/16/2009: Deep yellow-gold. Slate, almonds and vanilla custard on the nose. Oaked but well integrated with huge, rich pineapple, lemon and custard, with a moderately long finish. Better as it warmed up. Excellent, still very good on the second day. (Sweet Basil, Needham, MA) (3905 views)
Tasted by ScottS on 6/9/2009 & rated 94 points: Medium golden yellow in color. Full bodied with layors of flavors from citrusy lemon curd to roasted nuts & honey. Terrific balance and complexity with just the right amount of acidity to keep it fresh.

Tasted by danski on 6/5/2009 & rated 92 points: toasty, medium finish. Delicious as always. Best at just slightly below room temperature after it had a chance to open up a it. (3677 views)
Tasted by DenisLee on 4/29/2009: Yuck! Dark and oxidized. Not enjoyable. (3687 views)
Tasted by ScottS on 4/13/2009: Greenish yellow in color. Full bodied wine with explosive flavors of honeysuckle, green apple, pineapple & roasted hazelnuts. Wonderfully balanced! I really like this style.

Tasted by brich on 3/22/2009 & rated 92 points: I very interesting and enjoyable california chard. Oak but not too much. Lovely blend of tastes on the palette. I actually preferred this once it opened up a little bit and warmed up. Very good wine for the money. (3786 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Santa Cruz Mountains

Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia

Once referred to by wine writers as the Chaine d'Or -- or "golden chain" -- the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA sits above Silicon Valley, running along the craggy range next to the Pacific on some of the prettiest parts of Northern California. The area supports more than 75 wineries, despite being limited by geography and high land prices.

In 1981 the Santa Cruz Mountains Viticultural Appellation became federally recognized, one of the first American viticultural areas to be defined by geophysical and climatic factors. The appellation encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountain range, from Half Moon Bay in the north, to Mount Madonna in the south. The east and west boundaries are defined by elevation, extending down to 800 feet in the east and 400 feet in the west.
