Tasted by jmoore431 on 11/21/2020 & rated 91 points: Very dark, ripe and rich with a bit of “warmth” from alcohol; the nose and palate are quite similar to an excellent Chianti. 91+ (1019 views)
Tasted by affordableCollector on 1/29/2014 & rated 90 points: red, orange, in the color. dark fruit, soil, spice, on the nose. chocolate, espresso, earth, soil, leather, on the palate. medium acid, on the finish. (2861 views)
Tasted by lpk22 on 2/21/2009 & rated 90 points: Enjoyed during OTBN, paired with a spicy lamb pasta, fruity, full body, good finish, very smooth wine, drinking very nicely. (4364 views)
Tasted by Stevesrisk on 11/5/2007 & rated 90 points: Opened this last night to serve alongside grilled pork chops dry rubbed with white pepper, oregano, basil, grey salt. It was a wonderful match. Plenty of fruit, bright, clean, good acidity to stand up to the spices. Think this is where this wine will stay at for a couple more years, but that's about it. However, at this time, it is a delicious bottle of wine. (4559 views)
Tasted by marcSl on 9/4/2007 & rated 92 points: Still a great bottle in mid-2007 (4334 views)
Tasted by lpk22 on 6/2/2007 & rated 90 points: Very smooth, fruit was well integrated. Color is beginning to turn a little brownish. Very easy to drink. Will not be getting any better, best to decant for a bit. (3805 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 1/8/2007 & rated 87 points: Otis brought this to a Kybo dinner. Paired with a mushroom risotto. Some carmel nuances on the nose. Light to medium bodied. This had integrated tannins with red berry, spice and mocha notes. Good food wine. 87-88 points. (2407 views)
Tasted by otisabdul on 1/6/2007 & rated 90 points: Purchased on release for $33. The blend is 95% Sangiovese and 5% cab sauvignon. I really enjoyed this wine, especially with the food (short ribs in particular). Their was a leathery black reaspberry characteristic that was quite appealing. Medium-bodied, with a nice acidity level. It finishes gently and is completely mature. Drink up. (2181 views)
Tasted by winefornewbies-podcast on 7/9/2006 & rated 87 points: At first blush, this seemed to have lost some of its spark, but as the wine opened up, it improved in its aromas and levels of flavor. Still, I'm glad I didn't wait longer to enjoy it. (2317 views)
Tasted by thomaskeil on 7/4/2006 & rated 91 points: Somehow this was in my cellar without CellarTracker 'knowing' about it. What a treat for the 4th! Red with a hint of browning. Great nose of spicey cherries and tobacco earth. Mouth coating fruit with a big midpalate and grainy tannins. Long finish. Easily my best experience with this wine to date. (2175 views)
Tasted by zinslurpie on 12/2/2005 & rated 88 points: Mature, round, soft tannins. Pleasant plum and light red berries on the palate. medium finish. (2368 views)
Tasted by VAGenius on 11/23/2005: Seemed to be a very brooding wine. Not a lot of fruit, this wine was dominated by tar, earth, and mocha with a very intense but not sweet earthy fruit. Not as enjoyable as I expected. (8 views)
Tasted by cipherbean on 11/21/2005 & rated 84 points: Starting to fade. Thin and old. (2461 views)
Tasted by AlexHop on 8/17/2004 & rated 87 points: Some nice flavors but the mouthfeel was a bit thin. (2810 views)

Shafer

Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
