Community Tasting Notes (average 92.9 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 53 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by mattyboy_ on 12/20/2023 & rated 96 points: Absolutely incredible on pop and pour. Pure Raveneau white burg heaven - haunting smoky yellow plum, green apple, seaspray, iodine, oyster shell. On the palate - waxy smoky salty yellow fruit. Incredible creamy/waxy texture yet buttressed by intense chalk and minerals. Finish goes on for days. Flirting with perfection. (503 views)
Tasted by Corgi on 12/25/2022: There's so much tension and energy to this... (964 views)
Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 12/21/2022 & rated 95 points: A stunning wine, a contender for my white of the year. The overall impression is one of purity and delicacy. The nose starts with some fine pear drops, a little oyster shell and some subtle pineapple core sweetness / tartness / greenness. With time there is something ever so slightly honeyed, acacia honey, I think. Also some white currants and something more savoury that reminds me of carved turkey.

The palate is delicate, saline and perfectly, perfectly balanced. Puckering acidity still after 17 years and texturally fine. There is a slight tutti frutti lift that charms. Outstanding. Enjoyed over 90 mins with oysters, cod cheeks and comté. (983 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/14/2022 & rated 92 points: Again, it is overshadowed by the 05 Vaillons in blind. On a standalone, it is a good Raveneau nevertheless. (1319 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 6/8/2021 & rated 92 points: A good Raveneau but it is overshadowed by a more powerful 05 Vaillons. Seashell, citrus, minerals and stone fruit. Compact and precise with moderate weight and power. (2256 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 4/16/2021 & rated 92 points: Light hue, youthful.
Good flavour intensity, crisp citrus and honey, white flowers, a little herbal spice, talc powder. Well structured, good acidity, crisp clean finish. Fresh and intense. (1828 views)
Tasted by finediningnyc on 4/2/2021 & rated 94 points: Word on the street is Butteaux triumphs MDT in warm vintages. In comes Butteaux 2005. It had a superb nose that made it hard to put down. Palate didn’t quite match, but Raveneau is always a pleasure to drink. (1486 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 12/30/2020 & rated 94 points: Medium green-tinged white gold, very youthful for age. Absolutely marvellous nose, totally classical, immediately recognisable as Raveneau, oyster shell and lemon cream, white flowers and warmth from the wood, intense and deep but with lovely lift; fresh and minerally palate, almost incredibly youthful and lively for a 15 year old Premier Cru, perfect weight and balance, silky texture with gentle bitters; lemon and orange finish, excellent length. A stunner, at perfect peak. (2324 views)
Tasted by Nicephoras on 6/22/2020: 2005 Burgundy blinds on Jason's roof: Caught in the right moment, this was phenomenal. A touch of oyster shell, some very clean and precise fruit that developed into a precise finish with some lovely lemon notes on the finish. (2184 views)
Tasted by psiweaver on 4/4/2020 & rated 94 points: Flinty with great acid and some lemon rind notes with an almost honeysuckle finish. Very nice viscosity. Absolutely delicious with sushi. (1496 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 1/31/2020: Medium yellow. Gorgeous aromas of honeysuckle, hazelnut, and yellow fruit, but for the first 90 minutes, much more Raveneau than Chablis. Fabulous weight and silky feel with the acidity, iodine, and minerality initially showing up on the finish but eventually subsuming the whole wine from beginning to end. I was skeptical at first, but this slayed me in the end. On a plateau of maturity that could last another 5+ years. Admirable underlying structure for a 2005 white. (1920 views)
Tasted by kingkanu on 10/21/2019: Very subtle and reticent on the nose, and nothing develops after being open for an hour or so, the palate is totally the opposite with quite an intense wave of fruit with beautifully integrated oak all developed nicely with a long finish (1691 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 4/18/2019: A little flat. (1082 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 1/11/2019 & rated 88 points: Golden yellow. Saline aromas with honey and some woody notes. Full bodied with a warm finish. The wine gives a rather coarse feeling on the palate, and does not appear very delicate. (1770 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 12/18/2018 flawed bottle: Corked (1795 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 10/29/2018 & rated 92 points: The terroir of chablis suits the ripe vintage. Honeysuckle, seashell, yellow fruit and minerals. Palate was expansive with a medium plus finish. Drinking very well now. Acidity was particularly pronounced for this ripe vintage. (1790 views)
Tasted by psi on 6/9/2018 & rated 94 points: I understand the hype. This is a beautiful wine, silky texture, ripe lemon, mineral with great class, and yet a sort of timid style. Raveneau will never be hedonistic. It's more about elegance and class. An understated profile... for connoisseurs. I love it. Unfortunately the world does too. (1514 views)
Tasted by KenK on 4/3/2018 & rated 93 points: A DC Wino hits Chi-town (RPM Steak): Classic Chablis aromas of rocky stone fruits. Firm structure surrounds ripe yellow and white fruit with a hint of earth. Smooth rich textures throughout and offers up tremendous pleasure. Drink or hold. (2343 views)
Tasted by snjen on 2/4/2018 & rated 93 points: Very nice "Chablis flavors" and starting to show some development. A nice drink now but will easily keep. (1512 views)
Tasted by rlove on 12/18/2017 & rated 92 points: Honeyed nose that screams aged Raveneau, framed by some iodine and seashell. Ripe but not overdone, with plenty of acidity to keep this balanced. Silky texture. Finishes long. I really like this. Great now. (1673 views)
Tasted by PJL100 on 9/18/2017 & rated 95 points: golden but vibrant developed colour
beautifully fresh bouquet with quince perfume, oyster shell, sea brine and complex creamy malo, wonderfully sweet palate, a conductor in full command of the orchestral palate (1744 views)
Tasted by Levantine on 8/19/2017: Beautifully balanced
The Chablis angularity has softened with honey and quince notes
I think it has a long life ahead but it is now drinking beautifully (1788 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 6/17/2017: Bright, light tulip color. Musky, iodine-laden scents. All Raveneau all the time-medium weight with glorious, silky texture, waxy, ripe lemon, great length. Although I know this is not the case, the soil base feels more like clay than limestone. It does not have particularly high acidity but is still beautifully balanced, especially for a 2005. Lovely bottle at its peak. (1996 views)
Tasted by rlove on 4/30/2017 & rated 91 points: Ripe nose, with marzipan, honey, and iodine. Great mouth feel with nice balance of ripe fruit and nice acidity. This bottle is possibly slightly advanced, but still shows nice complexity. (1764 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 4/28/2017 & rated 94 points: Slightly darker in color next to an '04 and more unctuous and fruity -- yet balanced and absolutely youthful. Lovely minty steely ripe apricot/peach elements (but subtle), silky mouthfeel. Great balance of acidity and round fruit. Lovely. (1741 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
