Tasted by Wineson on 10/2/2022 flawed bottle: Odd oder that continued in the taste of the wine (850 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 8/16/2022 & rated 93 points: This has slipped from its lofty peak and requires consumption over the next few years allowing you to enjoy all of its earthy, cherries, red plums, kirsch, herbs, and peppery nuances. Drink from 2022-2025. (2158 views)
Tasted by AaronMaxwell on 5/12/2022 & rated 94 points: It’s singing! Drink now.

No decant, just popped and poured. Had with NY strip at Tyler Florence’s spot in SF. Feminine, floral nose. Masculine, round, sweet body. Acid and alcohol still strong and present. Was at its best after 30 minutes open, then a gentle decline over next hour. Raisins, wood, and funky forest floor are prevalent. (1262 views)
 Tasted by k H i L o on 4/24/2021 & rated 93 points: Superbe ! Ouvert 2h avant. Une vigueur impeccable débarrassée de toute aspérité. (1358 views)
Tasted by KenK on 5/19/2019 & rated 94 points: A big rich wine with pretty spices that also drinks well. Mine and groups #1 CdP out of 12 tasted blind on this evening. Very well made in a bigger brawny style that retains freshness, complexity, and be a fun drinker all at the same time. Likely near peak, but should great pleasure for years to come. Impressive. (2440 views)
Tasted by korniev on 2/8/2019 & rated 94 points: Amazing Grenach at a great spot right now. If u have a bottle of this, wait for a good occasion and just open it. U will remember that bottle for a long time. I am very curious how good is their RESERVE). WOW (1555 views)
Tasted by k H i L o on 9/18/2018 & rated 93 points: 15 degrés qui font effet... Je ne le commente pas, mais je dis juste que c'est de la bombe ! Qu'est ce que c'est bon ! (1678 views)
Tasted by King Julien on 3/30/2018 & rated 94 points: Poured half bottle via Coravin into decanter. Ready to go right away and nice for a couple hours until gone. (2004 views)
Tasted by King Julien on 11/20/2017 & rated 92 points: Decanted 1 hour. Maybe didn't need it. It was better at first then went downhill over a couple hours. There was quite a bit of fine sediment in addition to heavier sediment. It may have helped to stand it up the day prior. (1845 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 12/31/2016 & rated 91 points: Ruby color, bricking and a teaspoon of fine sediment. One hour decant, without appreciable effect. This wine has distinct and dominant elements of tart and tangy pomegranate and cranberry with some more classic grenache underneath. Smooth otherwise. A very interesting wine that is not for everyone. Although you can taste the 15% alcohol, it doesn't hit you hard and is otherwise quite deceptive. Truly an interesting wine that gets an extra point for such unique elements, but not likely one in which I'd reinvest. (1997 views)
Tasted by King Julien on 12/20/2016 & rated 94 points: Decanted 1 hour. (1745 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 12/10/2015 & rated 90 points: Drank in London
Nose of forest floor, tobacco, spice and dark fruit. Rich complex palate. (2412 views)
Tasted by King Julien on 11/27/2015 & rated 94 points: Decanted 5 hours, probably a few hours too long, had intended to drink sooner. (1882 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 7/8/2015 & rated 92 points: At the end of the tasting, so not many notices, but I remember the strong fruit nose and taste (dark and red berries), very concentrated and massive, even that I like powerful wines this example was a bit too alcohol dominated, maybe needs some more air and time, 92+ (2103 views)
Tasted by cardsandwine on 5/27/2013: Excellent CDP. Beautiful back end of earth and pure fruit. Balanced palate with loads of complexity. Round and delicious. (3503 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 4/3/2013 & rated 96 points: Deep garnet color.
First whiff from the nose was fantastic revealing a freshness of cherry fruit which sadly went quickly away leaving in its place liqueur-like, jammy and darker fruit.
Nose is scented, complex and mature with tertiary aromas accompanying abundant fruit like blackberry and plum and minerals.
Palate is even more intense than the nose with unending finish. Fruit is liqueur-like as the wine is full bodied and with lots of glycerol. Yet it is balanced and
drinks effortlessly. Flavors include spices, herbs and ground coffee. Tannins are mellow and acidity has to be high for the wine to be in such an impeccable balance.
The wine is mature but I believe it could age and last for at least twenty more years given its structure and still abundant fruit... (3158 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 3/19/2013: Still deeply colored. Thrilling aromatics of tobacco, leather, menthol and plum. Full and ripe but basically old fashioned, complex and savory with strong plum, raspberry and bark. No untoward sweetness and excellent acidity for the vintage. Will last but this is fantastic now and by far the most exciting Chateauneuf I've had in some time. (2952 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 2/18/2013 & rated 95 points: Dinner at Heirloom Cafe in SF with Jim H and Tom. Awesome place, very friendly on corkage.

This is a very big wine, gorgeous full nose of spice and red fruits. Complex wine, coming from the old vines (100 year old Grenache vines) Spicy red fruits, red pepper, mocha/coffee, some raisin and medicinal fruit in the background.

Huge finish, liqueur like. 30 seconds. Big and interesting wine that will probably add complexity over time. Was a favorite of this group, given its size and jamminess it may not be for everyone (2779 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 8/29/2012 & rated 95 points: Drinking perfectly today, the offers ample, fresh, ripe. spicy red and black fruits, earth and fennel. Produced from Grenache vines that are mostly close to 100 years old, the wine is rich, soft, plush, long and complex. (3560 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 4/20/2012 & rated 94 points: 2000 High-end Chateauneuf du Pape Horizontal (Bin 75): Extremely complex yet lacking balance. Definitely a blockbuster when it was younger due to its slight volatility now. BBQ sauce, spicy red pepper, mocha, jammy, Dr. Pepper, sweet, radish, raisin in the background, and a cognac-like finish. Very large scaled and interesting even though I would not want to drink a ton of it. (2480 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 12/15/2011: Fairly dark and youthful looking. Strong aroma of medicinal black cherry, then some obvious surmaturite and an interesting blend of oregano and green herbs. Syrupy entry, dark fruit, bark all leavened by powerful acidity and prominent licorice on the finish. Although previous tasters have mentioned Grenache, the darker, brooding nature seems like the essence of Mourvedre to me. Big, serious, interesting wine only slightly marred by its overripeness. This traditional Chateauneuf will last for a long time. (2458 views)
Tasted by KingSlacker999 on 11/5/2011 & rated 95 points: Wine is in a great place right now, just beautiful grenache fruit on the nose and wonderful balance. Fruit is dark and the acidity is just right. 3rd time I've had this in the past year or so, and this was the best bottle. (2624 views)
Tasted by GEisner on 10/16/2011 & rated 90 points: Great structure. Vanilla notes in the finish. Didn't WOW me like previous bottles, but stil improving. (2444 views)
Tasted by Ary on 10/2/2011 & rated 93 points: Chateauneuf-du-Pape semi-blind tasting and dinner (Steven's House): Between the Vieille Julienne 2000 Generique and Reserve. Garrigues and ripe fruit tones in the nose. Thick and silky with more fruit tones but less tannins than the Reserve. Easier to appreciate, drinks well now. (2886 views)
Tasted by Sleepy Dave on 7/1/2011: Cote Rotie / Hermitage vs CDP (Peach Garden @ OCBC Building): Alcohol :: 15%
Opened for 4hrs. Medium ruby, brown hue. A bit alcoholic, but this can’t cover the perfume aromas, lovely nose with roasted meat and herb, licorice, violet and high tone of kirsch liquor, clearly a CDP that display loads of depth and complexity despite the wine still being tightly coiled. Highly intense on the palate that coated with very rich and concentrated of sweet dark fruits that giving the very high level of fine grained tannin and oak a good buffer. This is still pretty young at this stage, muscular, structure and tannic. Stunning depth but not really expressive on the flavors with wild factor. Very well balance, with hoisin sauce, savory meatiness on the long, powerful finish with mineral undertone. This required many more years, say 7-10yrs to really show its potential. Buy - Maybe - Yes. Over the last decade, Jean-Paul Daumen, proprietor/winemaker at Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, has emerged as one of France’s most compelling wine producers. He is a driven man that will sacrifice anything for quality in his wines. For example, in the rain soaked 2002 vintage he harvested only 50% of the crop, and then rejected half of that. One-fourth of a crop does not make economic sense, but Jean-Paul has his eye on a much longer-term goal. All his wines are labours of love.

Jean-Paul farms 10 hectares in Northern Chateauneuf-du-Pape and 5 hectares in Cotes du Rhone “lieu-dit Clavin” for Vieille Julienne, including the ancient vines his family planted at the turn of the century– all biodynamically. Daumen’s winemaking philosophies are remarkably simple – old vines, tiny yields of around 20 hectoliters per hectare, no SO2 during vinification, aging in neutral tanks or wood, and bottling without fining or filtration — and they combine to give Vieille Julienne’s wines their distinctive character.

“I strive to find the best practices rather than set myself a goal in terms of a finished product. All of my decisions are made for the future. What motivates me is to install our wines in the long run, even if the path is longer, more complicated and difficult.

We have the distinction of being located exclusively on terraces in the northern part of the appellation Châteauneuf du Pape and this site provides freshness, balance, depth and minerality naturally- from there one must understand and respect the context of the vintage. This is important if one seeks the right balance.” -Jean-Paul Daumen

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
