Community Tasting Notes (average 94.3 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 4 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by faivre_eric on 12/20/2020 & rated 95 points: Fabulous showing of a 33 years old Cabernet Sauvignon, elegant and very very sexy!
Deep black/purple color, nose of concentrated red fruits, smoky notes and beautifully integrated tannins.
Very complex and multi leveled it has an amazingly long finish.
Sadly the last bottle in the cellar! (628 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 3/28/2013 & rated 93 points: Sale e Pepe restaurant. Excellent, fully mature cabernet. Garnet color. Liquorice, black olive, cedar, ripe cherry and cumin on the nose. Silky-textured, perfectly round and smooth. Long aftertaste. Absolutely healthy and enjoyable. (2824 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 3/28/2013 & rated 93 points: Garnet color. Nose is fully developed and slightly tired. Initially I was slightly dissapointed but it turned out to be a
very enjoyable, complex and food friendly wine that grew on me as time passed. It got even more appealing than the
two nebbiolos with which we drank it together (Sperrs '93 and Barbaresco '03).
Aromatically it has Cabernet typicity with cedar and leafy nuances together with licorice and black olive but not close to Bordeaux in style.
Flavorful palate with softened texture and good finish. Very enjoyable but drink up any remaining bottles as it will only decline from here. (2653 views)

Gaja

Producer website

Located in the Tuscany and Piedmont regions of Italy, Gaja makes collectible Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay wines, including the Langhe Conteisa label. Gaja wines are among the highest-rated in all of Italy. It is perhaps best known for its Super Tuscans, which are some of the most elegant on the market. However, the estate also makes top-quality wines rooted in Italian tradition, such as Barbaresco. It is perhaps the most lauded Barbaresco producer today.

Although the estate produces 18 different wines, the production is low at just 350,000 bottles per year, making these wines very rare. The best Gaja vintages include 2018, 2016, and 2015 as well as historically well-performing vintages such as 2013, 2011, 2010, 2008, 2004, and 2003. Many of Gaja’s best vintages have received perfect scores from critics

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon
