Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 144 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by DevenStephens on 5/19/2024 & rated 91 points: Much different from my other bottle. Much sweeter and less balanced. Apricot jam, honey, some white mushrooms. Medium finish. Main issue is the lack of acidity. Oh well, still a Sauternes so I can't complain too much (160 views)
Tasted by Nick72wine on 1/1/2024 & rated 88 points: Out of balance really, not a great vintage for Guiraud. (1131 views)
Tasted by ThaiPinotdrink on 12/29/2023 & rated 88 points: Good but I think the issue with this wine is that the sweetness is overwhelming. I have had sauternes from 2009 and 2016 and they got the sweetness much more undercontrol. I think the acidity is the reason for this imbalance. The wine got a lot of life left tho. I believe in a few years the flavor might mellow out a bit more and less imbalance

Smell: Honey, nuts, light cedar notes,
Taste: Honey, Grape juice.( Honey grape juice)

I rated 88 for good but I previously rate( on my note for 2009 Suduiraut which is much better imo at 94 so 88 seems fair.

I have another bottle in stock which will probablh drink in 5-10 years (1049 views)
Tasted by NutmegNative on 12/21/2023 & rated 82 points: Losing much of the floral characteristics from the last bottle opened 4 years ago. Leaning towards burnt toffee flavors with treacle and burnt orange in the background. Drinkable, but not especially enjoyable. This from a 375 ml (half) bottle), likely that a full (750 ml) bottle would be in better condition. (1156 views)
Tasted by mgxa_ on 11/5/2023 & rated 85 points: Very sweet (somewhat cloying). Full body. High acidity. Round texture. Long finish. It tastes like honey with notes of ripe pear, nutty, orange, orange blossom, lychee, ginger, and white florals. (1334 views)
Tasted by sjfunkenhauser on 10/11/2023 & rated 90 points: Very mineral driven with lots botrytis, hay and dried fruit, unfortunately a bit disjoint. Not the most complex sauterne, probably in part due to the fading fruit. Sweet, but not cloying.

Deep gold colour.

Pronounced aromas of hay, botrytis, honey, beeswax, wet slate, mandarin orange, dried peach, grapefruit, dried lotus leaf, kumquat.

Pronounced palate.

Medium body, medium (+) acidity, long finish. (1444 views)
Tasted by Treldman on 9/15/2023 & rated 91 points: Beautiful golden in the glass, with notes of honey, candied fruit, baked apple, stewed orange on the nose. The palate is more honey and baked/stewed fruit, with a slight complexity offered up by a candied ginger note. The mouthfeel is luscious, creamy and smooth. Delicious dessert wine. (1071 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 7/28/2023 flawed bottle: Mostly oxidized but with pleasant burnt orange peel. Surprised that it faded this quickly. Still drinkable, however. (1178 views)
Tasted by trifreddy on 6/24/2023 & rated 89 points: Caramel, abricot, miel et un je ne sais quoi empyreumatique qui détonne un peu. (1137 views)
Tasted by MatLot on 5/21/2023 & rated 89 points: nez discret bouche court tres moyen comme sauterne (1263 views)

Tasted by Renevin on 1/13/2023 & rated 92 points: Nez beaucoup de finesse, pomme, fruits confits. En bouche belle rondeur, et en fraîcheur tout est bien balancé, Belle longueur. Tres agréable (1432 views)
Tasted by tedcholl on 1/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Finishing New Years Eve dinner with this beautiful 2006 Sauternes halfie. Paired perfectly with a Mexican flan. This is an excellent Sauternes producer at a more reasonable price. Honey, dried apricot, caramel, vanilla, almond. (1393 views)
Tasted by DevenStephens on 11/19/2022 & rated 95 points: Can easily take on more aging. For a long while (1491 views)
Tasted by glassofhans on 10/3/2022 & rated 93 points: Guiraud never disappoints - impeccable balance of acidity and tertiary development at this point. It is my favourite Sauternes so far after d'Yquem. (1531 views)
Tasted by vinus_operandi on 6/6/2022 & rated 93 points: a wonderful mature sauternes. golden yellow with some caramelization. apricot, honey, white peach, and caramel on the palate. great balance and enough acidity to carry the day. very nice mouthfeel on this wine and a long long finish. paired perfectly with a nice hunk of Stilton blue cheese. (1793 views)
Tasted by winot on 3/15/2021 & rated 91 points: I quite like this, because it isn't too sweet, but it is rich and minerally - really nice with some dried up blue cheese I found - medium deep orangey gold, rich botrytis nose, not too sweet smelling, palate is thick but not unctuous and not too sweet - maybe lacks some acid, the finish is good not great, but I really like this cuz I always wonder what to do with Sauternes, but this is perfect for cheese/pate as aperitif, lovely (2731 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 9/10/2020 & rated 92 points: Patio Chilling at Tilia (Tilia, Mpls): Deep gold color. Drank a glass from 375 ml over 30 minutes. This was more mature, deeper, unctuous, honeyed, orange marmalade, caramelized brown sugar, ripe pear and baked apple, sweet, rich and round. Very good but with a much more mature profile than the sleek, bright '05 we drank along side. 91+ to 92pts. (3329 views)
Tasted by g-man on 6/21/2020 & rated 89 points: Sweet citrus and honey nose. Simple on the palate, very straightforward with little complexity. Enjoyable but n ot much to think about. (2986 views)
Tasted by Osiris021 on 6/19/2020 & rated 92 points: No formal notes. (2700 views)
Tasted by KSWinegeek on 5/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Golden color. Apricot and honey on nose. Apricot flavors. Nice wine. (2475 views)
Tasted by JHH51 on 8/17/2019 & rated 91 points: Nose of apricots and citrus. Medium body and finish. (2795 views)
Tasted by JHH51 on 5/4/2019 & rated 91 points: Apricots and grapefruit. Medium body with great expression in the mouth. Citrus finish. Very nice. (2639 views)
Tasted by Osiris021 on 4/21/2019 & rated 91 points: No formal notes. (2486 views)
Tasted by CondorKhan on 4/13/2019 & rated 92 points: A dinner with friends in NYC (New York): Accompanied the final course of cheesecake, and the combination couldn't have been more perfect. Liquid cheesecake is how I would describe it. Vanilla, candied orange, caramel. A slight, bitter herbal finish is masked by the sugar of the cheesecake. (1669 views)

Château Guiraud

Chateau Guiraud is one of the largest estates in Sauternes and makes a Premier Grand Cru Classé Sauternes. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries the 300-acre estate, which includes 210 acres of vineyards, was owned by a single family, the Guirauds, who earned the estate a reputation for outstanding wine. In 2006 the estate was purchased by four business partners who have continued to produce prestigious wines. Vineyards are planted with 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc, which is a notably high percentage of Sauvignon Blanc by the standards of the region. On average the vines are 30 years old. Nearly 10,000 bottles of Chateau Guiraud are produced annually. The estate also produces a dry white wine of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Château Guiraud recently earned organic farming certification, becoming the first of the Premiers Grands Crus Classés in the 1855 Bordeaux classification to do so. Winemaker Xavier Planty says the decision to adopt organic viticultural methods has helped shape the style of the property’s wines, putting greater emphasis on purity, intensity and elegance.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
