Tasted by Parisite on 2/24/2024 & rated 89 points: Was initially worried with previous comments because of its age. Surprised that this wine is still quite lovely. Leather and dark berries on the nose. Blueberries dominate the palate. Made for a beautiful accompaniment to denver steaks with leeks and black oyster mushrooms. Happy I still have 2 bottles in the cellar. (144 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 9/2/2023 & rated 91 points: Still has leathery dark red fruit. Nice tannins but near end of life (371 views)
Tasted by Gates House Wines on 1/14/2023 & rated 90 points: Very nice Bordeaux…getting a little past prime. Needed time to open up but once it did had nice fruit and structure. Needed salty snack (potato chips) to get it to reveal its complexity. (625 views)
Tasted by Ravi Deshpande on 10/29/2022 & rated 91 points: I’ve always had a fondness for this wine starting with the 97 vintage, as an inexpensive and reliable bordeaux. The 07 vintage was a little tired, but this bottle was singing. Robust (for Bordeaux) fruit, fine grained, slightly chewy tannins, medium finish. A very nice food wine or house bordeaux. (713 views)
Tasted by mike410 on 10/22/2022 & rated 89 points: The wine is tired, on it's last legs. Drink now. (789 views)
Tasted by Alden on 5/3/2020 & rated 89 points: Hi-Ho
Up-Date City!
My last bottle. Pop and pour. Its ready now folks, don't wait much longer.
Tanins resolved and a very nice experience. The nose-out of the bottle?-it's got fruit, maybe some fig, and old newspaper (how is that for a new one?). So don't wait-- if you have stored it well, you will not regret it. Had w beef Bourgoeuon- probably not the best combo. Trying, but can't get it 100% right yet==-probably never. (2157 views)
Tasted by Alden on 12/27/2018 & rated 89 points: Hey,
How long did you let this aerate? I think it needs a lot of aeration.
First night I jumped into it too soon. But after time it really opened up nicely.
Then, sat in re-ridge two days. Very good now!- beautiful nose-we actually had it with roast lamb. This was a great pairing. I just wish I hadn't been so greedy the first night and left more for tonight. I think it is ready so, go ahead and dive in-but let it breathe!! (and keep on truckin). (2833 views)
Tasted by VinoHunter on 12/25/2018 & rated 87 points: Little nose, little on the palate, little of everything...glads it’s out of my cellar. (2607 views)
Tasted by tonepad on 8/10/2017 & rated 87 points: A low rating for me. It's just kinda blah. Has no real flavor profile and lakes texture and body. My bottle had been cellared properly. I even carafed it and tried it on a second night...no help. I'd take a pass on this if you run across it. There are many better wines from the Graves appellation. (4324 views)
Tasted by acorelli on 8/30/2016 & rated 87 points: Solid, tannic, not very expressive. Hoped for something more interesting but a nice bottle of wine. (5455 views)
Tasted by KEISTIE on 3/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Ideal to drink at this moment...
Delicious!
Good price/qualtity! (5335 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 8/14/2015 & rated 90 points: This deserves a 90+ score and I'm embarrassed that I had never heard of it before. To me, this no name Graves Chateau is worth every penny for this $25 everyday drinking wine. After 30 min in the decanter, it jumps from the glass with a big nose of lavinder / violets, spice, red currant, ripe plums and a round mouthfeel indicative of the fatter, fruit forward 2009 vintage. If blind, I would have said this was from Margaux vs Graves. Drinks great now. 2009 reminds me of the 1990 Bordeaux vintage, but with more nobility and class. I will be buying more for my weekly wine. (5748 views)
Tasted by CieloVista on 7/4/2015 & rated 88 points: Dark red with strong aromas and flavors of black fruit with some oak. It was very smooth, dry, medium bodied with a clean dry after taste with some tobacco notes at the end. (5459 views)
Tasted by KVM on 1/28/2015: Dark red. Black cherries, cedar, soil. Cherry cough syrup, black pepper, medium+ body. Some heat, solid but not obtrusive tannin. Pretty perfumed finish. Good today and with a future. (4934 views)
Tasted by Whitetail Wino on 12/26/2014 & rated 89 points: Popped a magnum to drink with a beef tenderloin roast. Silky tannins, and the oak has mellowed perfectly. Hope to drink my one remaining magnum soon! (4087 views)
Tasted by mike410 on 10/19/2014 & rated 89 points: This seems to be in a shut down period. Lacking the smoothness and finesse of my last bottle. Will try again in a year. (3833 views)
Tasted by tb_baltimore on 5/7/2014 & rated 87 points: Agree with Motz on this one. Its always fun to compare with so many other reviewers. This felt disappointing to me relative to the 2009 vintage and to my expectations. Certainly a good wine when compared to all possible wines at this price point, so not a problem on the QPR level. But, not really that much of interest in the tasting. This also seemed, to me, to be very mild at this point on the tannins and acidity. I can't imagine that this will evolve much more. Relatively flat and mild taste that is pleasant, but not overly exciting. Maybe best as a food pairing wine. This didn't shift much with decanting time or over the following days. (4155 views)
Tasted by RBOND on 4/21/2014 & rated 93 points: The wine looks violet colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry and red currant. It tastes like blackberry. The body is medium/full. The wine has satin-like texture. The wine finishes long. (4061 views)
Tasted by KEISTIE on 4/19/2014 & rated 90 points: Good wine, much better than in july 2013!
No tannins at this moment.
A good price/quality! (3276 views)
Tasted by brujazz on 4/5/2014 & rated 89 points: Like the previous bottle. Better the second day. (3244 views)
Tasted by Mountster27 on 2/2/2014 & rated 89 points: Drank simultaneously with the 2005.
Showing more fruit, medium body and only a hint of minerality compared to the earlier vintage. Well integrated but fairly short finish. (3270 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 12/9/2013: A go to Bordeaux for frequent consumption. A step up from an everyday drinker, a step down from a special dinner. Duck on a weeknight is what we had this with, and the fit was good. Medium bodied, subtly black fruited, a bit of salinity, medium plus finish, delivers Graves character. Solid performance. (3043 views)
Tasted by brujazz on 11/24/2013 & rated 89 points: Add me to the consensus. Very nice wine, but certainly not exceptional. Great value and definitely the equal of many Bordeaux twice the price. Has that lean Graves taste that I find attractive. There's a mix of herbs and dried fruit that's fairly full in the mouth, more than ample in the middle and ends with a medium length finish. A bit of complexity, but you won't confuse it with Bahans Haut Brion, let alone the great Haut Brion itself. Would certainly buy more it it becomes available. (2970 views)
Tasted by mike410 on 9/24/2013 & rated 91 points: Excellent Qpr for $20. Nice lively wine with plenty of character. Could use a few more years in the bottle to tame the tannins and acidity. Medium to long finish. Blackberries, plum and some vanilla on the taste. Well done. (3540 views)
Tasted by KenPlace on 9/24/2013 & rated 89 points: 2009 vintage. Good but not great wine. For the price, I think it is a good QPR. In balance, but somewhat thin mid-palate. Medium finish. Would buy again. (3365 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
