Growing up in CA and being part of the wine scene as Pinot Noir exploded during that rise, I didn't often run with folks who were doing Bordeaux. So, I dig that Counselor Seiber dug this out of his cellar to share with us. Universally I think this may have been the WOTN at the table, too. There is a ferrous, iron quality to the wine, along with what Steve called tobacco. Plenty of stuffing too, yet elegant in tone with a cool mineral finish. As this sat out (I think Counselor opened and decanted this several hours before the dinner), it seemed to still tighten in the glass. A juicy, dark cherry with plenty of acid helping to support the structure. This is a marvelous wine, likely a long road ahead of it, and one I was lucky to taste alongside the group. Tasted this at Mark’s yearly Bordeaux tasting. Sampled 12 vintages each of Château Haut Brion and Château Margaux. Great wines and comradeship, what an exceptional event to be part of! Thanks to our host for his generosity in presenting a once in a lifetime Bordeaux tasting experience. Graceful and polished with rich but restrained flavors of creme de cassis, blackberry, graphite, pipe tobacco, sweet oak. This wine is in complete harmony to for my palate. Decanted 1 hr, enjoyed over 4 hrs, half the bottle refrigerated and consumed on day 2.
Gently aromatic, perfumed even, in way that I didn’t expect. You can smell that there is some age on this wine; leather, pipe tobacco, damp earth, black truffles, balanced with black cherries and plums. Medium bodied with fine gentle tannins.
Where the nose led with tertiary aromas, with the fruits in the background, the order is flipped in the mouth. Super smooth ripe cherries and blackberries, lead the way. Then come cedar wood, graphite, tobacco, wild mushrooms. The flavors are classic Bordeaux but the mouthfeel is smooth and gentle like a very nice aged red Burgundy; it’s a wonderful experience. Finish is long and very complex.
This is not a loud wine, it’s quiet and surprisingly subtle. For a wine so famous, well regarded, and expensive (!), I guess I expected something a bit more in-your-face. This is not that at all, which I like it all the better for. Reminds me of the first time I had a LdH Gran Reserva; surprisingly light and subtle, which is my preference.
This is not a 100 year wine, like I’ve heard some of the top Bordeaux can be. It’s already showing its age. It was still very good on day 2, but not definitively better. To my palate, it’s in the perfect place. The palate eases into a red fruit profile, with earthy oaky mid palate, lively acidity, and a long smooth finish. There is a lot going on here, great complexity almost too understated to be a wow. But close. Hard to believe this is 21 years old, very clean and fresh.
