Community Tasting Notes (average 89.2 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 60 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by pbaek on 4/13/2023: Getting somewhat pruny and the fruit is browning further. Perhaps like the Chateauneuf. The 2004, at this late stage, is a much better wine. Past peak, and certainly time to drink up. (571 views)
Tasted by humagne on 12/17/2020 & rated 90 points: Starts to display tertiary aromas of leather, smoke, mushrooms, while still there is the garrigue spicy aspect. Nice attack and good presence on the oalate. Quite long finish. Ready to drink. (1123 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 1/19/2020: This has aged just as well as most Châteauneufs and it is awesome right now. The fruit is now darker and deeper, there’s notes of dates and figs providing complexity and interest. Pure and local, garrigue in spades, pepper, tannins almost resolved. Will keep. Lazy afternoon at La Contadine. (1359 views)
89+ pts (2749 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 7/19/2015 & rated 90 points: Rhone Tasting: Elegant and floral with sweet cherries and roses on the nose. Silky but still firm tannins, lots of plums and red cherries. Smooth but still powerful with notes of herbs, black pepper, red pepper, earth. Tasted blind, I guessed this as an 09, it was that well-structured and seemingly young. Impressive to see how well this is doing (given proper storage, of course). Charvin’s Le Poutets can age! (2801 views)

90 pts (2562 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 4/15/2014: Bought chez Charvin and stored in France. I can see from my notes that this wine was drinking well in 2010 and four years later it continues to do so. The nose is floral and dominated by pretty red fruit, the palate gentle and refined showing the same red-fruited profile. This shows the same elegance and refinement I find in Reynauds wine and which I've found in the lighter vintages for Charvin. There is no hard edges here but the tannins are still present underneath which means there is more to come. Enjoyed over several days with no change of profile. (2639 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 10/3/2013 flawed bottle: Something wrong here. Sharp on the attack, something off-putting, jagged palate. Did not improve over three nights. (2560 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 3/20/2013: Approaching the end of a case bought on release, and this, like the last few bottles that I've opened, showed too much funky brett. Did not blow off with air, even over night nor the third night. Too much brett for me to enjoy this wine. (2434 views)
Tasted by Rick 4 Wine on 2/24/2013 & rated 91 points: Very nice CdR with breath depth from minerality to developed fruit. Still will drink well for three or four years. (2352 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 2/18/2013: In line with prior bottles from this case, showing a good amount of bretty funk that partially obscures what should be lovely, pure red cherry Charvin fruit. Good, not great because of the brett, although Abbey really liked it. (2176 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 6/30/2012: Out of plastic cups at Compo Beach, but still satisfying. Dark fruits with a core of red raspberry, meaty, peppery, moderate funk, solid in the mouth but with a smooth texture, this has aged nicely and seems to be right in the zone. However, the brett level is pretty high, and I see that my last few TNs for this wine cite high brett. In this bottle, it added some funk to the palate and was not overbearing. Good wine for a Saturday night at the beach, and well received by Abbey. (2472 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 3/6/2012: At first, this reminded me of the 2001 Coudoulet that I opened a few nights prior, because both of these wines showed a resolved palate with no tannins. Then this wine set itself apart by the presence of Brett that obscured the fruit. This wine should be in its prime, but it was a disappointing bottle. (2385 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 12/12/2011: Seems thin on the first night, surprisingly. Should be right in the zone, but it's reticent. I recall the '00 and '01 Charvin Cotes du Rhones to be much more open and giving at a similar age.
Much better on the second night, showing no thinness, much brighter fruit. Very nice purity and honesty to this wine. (2381 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 8/27/2011: My third bottle this summer, from a case bought on release. This bottle showed more brett than others. Otherwise, drinking very well today, with well-defined red fruits and spices. With the Parneses as Hurricane Irene came down. (2664 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 8/5/2011: Deep cherry fruit with some black pepper notes. Good focus. I couldn't get too analytic, as I was drinking this out of cups on the beach, but it was very satisfying. (2706 views)
Tasted by rayq on 6/16/2011: This wine has improved since trying it last year. There is still a spirity grenache aspect to this but it is beginning to round out. There is some nice garrique and cherry. Still a touch 'hot' in the mouth but very southern Rhone, some glycerin and drinking nicely. No rush though. (86-89) (2844 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 3/9/2011: Lots of red fruits, cherry and strawberry, with a hit of white pepper and some pine scents also. Not as angular as I recall bottles shortly after release, yet there is still some strong tannin left here. No degradation overnight, the wine is showing clean red fruit with good vibrancy and focus, and little tannin overnight. Still, I’d give this one another 6-12 months of age and check then to see if it’s ready. (3093 views)
Tasted by ldorf on 2/24/2011 & rated 93 points: Perhaps the greatest "wine deal" ever. (3177 views)
Tasted by humagne on 11/13/2010 & rated 90 points: Excellent but still young. Will improve. (3289 views)
Tasted by bwillia on 10/19/2010 & rated 89 points: Nice. Good balance of fruit and earthy, spicy nuances. (3469 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 8/3/2010: This wine is drinking so well right now. It is one of the wines from Charvin that reminds me most of Rayas; concentrated raspberry and cherry fruit with hints of earth and sweet tomato juice. Will develop more nuance with age, but I'd drink it now for the sheer pleasure of the fruit. Outstanding wine. (3489 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 6/15/2010: Surprisingly open and delicious. Highly expressive raspberry and cherry fruit with dusty, earthy marks. Much more ready than the 2004 which is still somewhat restrained. I can understand why some people would call this wine Burgundian. I'd start to drink this now and over the next 7-10 years. OWNERS & HISTORY:
The Domaine Charvin was founded by Guillaume Charvin in 1851. 16 years later, in 1867, the entire planting area was destroyed by vine fretters. But William Charvin and other members of the family didn’t let this get them down, and replanted the soil. At this time, the family name also changed from Charavin to Charvin – due to an administrative error. The winery is situated in the northwestern part of the region next to Château Maucoil.

The family began its work with four hectares of land in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The first bottling at the winery – intended only for private consumption – took place in 1951. During the following years, most of the wine was sold to dealers. In 1990, with Laurent Charvin, the sixth generation took over the family business. During his first year, he produced some 8,000 bottles of wine. The remainder was still sold to local dealers. Since 1990, the amount of wine produced has increased each year. At the moment, the winery has 8.2 hectares of land in three different lieux-dits: Maucoil, l’Arnesque, and Cabrières, all in the northwestern part of the region. The soil there consists mainly of limestone and loam, and is more or less covered with stones. The average age of the grapevines is 45 years. Laurent Charvin loves to philosophize about nature, adjusting himself to whatever happens outside: to the weather, the soil, and the grapevines. He explains:

“I’m not sure whether the quality of the wines increases with passion; the potentials of the soil and of the grapevines are more important. You have to comprehend what you have. Besides, you should never try to copy your neighbors, because each parcel has unique material with its own DNA.”

GEOGRAPHY & VARIETALS:
Only a single red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced; it consists of 85% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Vaccarèse. The wine is made in a very traditional manner. No stems are removed; after sorting, the grapes are lightly pounded and then poured into fermentation tanks made of concrete. The wine is recirculated daily during alcoholic fermentation and maceration, which last around three weeks. Laurent is no friend of excessive extraction of the wine, but rather aims at more balance, freshness, and structure in the wine. Experimentally, and always striving to maintain optimum freshness, Laurent uses concrete tanks exclusively during the ripening process lasting eighteen months. All of the wine is bottled without interruption and without filtering, in order to avoid even the slightest differences from one bottle to the next. Annual production amounts to around 30,000 bottles.

"It would be no problem for me to make two cuvées: a powerful one and a light one. But I am convinced that only a mixture of the two will make a wine the way a wine should be, and the way I like it!"
- Laurent Charvin

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
