Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 126 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ehaav on 1/12/2024 & rated 91 points: Disgorged December 2021. Cherry pit, bitter almond, under ripe nectarine, yellow apple, raw dough, slight honeysuckle. Coarse and fleeting mousse. Rich and concentrated base wine with good complexity. Long length. I really like the dosage level here, it balances the acid really well, with a little to spare, giving it a more rounded and rich style. And given that it is -15 degrees, something richer is very welcome. (275 views)
Tasted by mhuhnke on 12/11/2023 & rated 88 points: Bright and crisp. Yellow, apple, and pear notes. Very slight Yeasty notes. Showed no sign of aging yet. Not complex. Easy, quaffable drinker. (318 views)
Tasted by FransS on 6/12/2023 & rated 89 points: Dégorgé July 2020; friendly, balanced, pure, starting a tad too sweet, but lost its sweetness in the taste. (809 views)
 Tasted by 560 B&W on 3/25/2023 & rated 90 points: Disgorged Jan 2022 (800 views)
Tasted by ChateauShiny on 2/5/2023 & rated 90 points: December 2021 disgorgement at 6g/l dosage.

Pours a medium-pale copper with a mousse that fades quickly. Large bubble. Rich nose - almonds, cherries, lemons and toasted brioche. Medium heavy bodied, nice lift, perfect amount of acidity, and a rich palate. Palate follows the nose. There are what I perceive to be dusty and chalky tannins that presist though the finish. Finish is filled with minerals, sweet cherries, and a bit of dough. I end up with sticky lips after a few sips.

Overall, a good and rich linear bubbly. I think I would prefer this as a Brut Nature - it seems the base wine has enough richness to carry these bubbles. (981 views)
Tasted by BottleScholar on 12/26/2022 & rated 94 points: Meyer lemon juice and zest, mandarin orange, fresh-baked bread, crunchy baguette crust, apricot, peach, watermelon, crushed granite minerality, macadamia nut, and a splash of almond liqueur. Medium-plus to high acid that is both lively and rounded and creamy on the palate. A lot of complexity and intensity. The dosage is just a touch higher than my personal preference. (875 views)
Tasted by Northcraft on 12/1/2022 & rated 88 points: Delicious and well rounded! (880 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 8/28/2021 & rated 91 points: 4th Saturday Brown Bagger (EBCC): Disgorged April 2012. Cherry and apple, with earthy clay and dried peach undertones. Fine bead. Flavors of bruised red apple and lemon curd with doughy and yeasty tones in the finish. Excellent. (2205 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 10/11/2020 & rated 88 points: Second Sunday Group: 2010 Bordeaux (aka Bal Masqué) (R&D's): April 2012 disgorgement. Bruised apple on the nose and palate. Hints of roasted almond as well. Getting a bit long in the tooth. (2697 views)
Tasted by JaynPam on 5/31/2020 & rated 88 points: Nice, soft bubbles. Good fruit. Lacked some of the yeast flavors I enjoy in a champagne but that is not a flaw, just a stylistic preference. (2404 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 1/5/2020 & rated 89 points: Best bottle yet. Clear signs of maturity with a soft, golden expression but still feeling fresh. Nice! (2739 views)
Tasted by cassel on 1/4/2020 & rated 87 points: Somewhat thin and lacking the fruit I enjoy in a Blanc de Noir.
Ok bottle but not comparable to other grower champagnes recently tried. (2595 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 10/29/2019: Disgorged 2018. Big rich pinot fruit showing of a tasty strawberry fruit character. 8 g/L RS. Works it out at $50 but wish it was cheaper. (2409 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 8/17/2019 & rated 88 points: This came across as fruitier and more balanced thn previous bottles. Quite nice. (1973 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 7/12/2019 & rated 86 points: Deg. 2012 so has some extra age to it. Nice nose of gunpowder and peach. Medium mousse. On the palate stonefruit pit, a touch of red berries but also grapefruit, quite bitter. Does not have the freshness to balance the bitterness. Alright but much prefer the BdB from the same producer. (1933 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 5/26/2019 & rated 86 points: From a case bought back in 2012. A bit thin and acidic. Lacking fruit but still not showing any secondary notes. Not bad but neither very good. (1840 views)
Tasted by Noelle H on 10/27/2018 & rated 91 points: Fuller bodied bubbly. Ripe red apple skin, berry scones and spice. Lots going on here - this wine could definitely hold up to some weighty dishes. (2226 views)
Tasted by MissHighwater on 1/24/2018 & rated 90 points: yellowy gold in colour, this has aged very well. Nutty and complex. Soft mousse. (3149 views)
Tasted by oropeza on 12/11/2017 & rated 88 points: Soft fruit, some chalkiness, fleshy, shorter finish... good 'middle notes'... nice. (3018 views)
Tasted by Montecalvo on 9/9/2017 & rated 88 points: drank at Linda Nicholson's Party (3451 views)
Tasted by TXRhoneRanger on 5/28/2017 & rated 94 points: Disg 9/2010. This wine was heavily discounted and I picked it up for absolutely nothing. Suspect because of its long disgorgement day but the wine did not disappoint. Full-bodied Pinot fruit with exotic hunting tones and autolysis. I wish I had more of this bottle especially at this price (3745 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 3/24/2017 & rated 93 points: Dinner with Friends (E&S Fish Company): Disgorged April 2012. Showing plenty of red berry pinot fruit along with mineral amd pear qualities. Fine bead with flavors of red fruit, apple, rose water, stone and blanched almond. (3840 views)
Tasted by iwfsc on 1/10/2017 & rated 92 points: IWFSC 821 Dinner (Claudia): Lots of depth, disgorged 9/2011, hint of strawberry, delicious and long finish. (3392 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 10/20/2016 & rated 91 points: Disgorged July 2015. The Pinot influence is obvious here. Red berry, citrus, quince, and kiwi aromas are delineated and pronounced. Stout and full bodied, structured and firm, vibrant and sturdy. The juicy loquat palate is energized by a pin-prick bead, racy acidity, and a hint of saline. Crushed rocks on the long finish. Clean, taut, and refreshing. (2784 views)
Tasted by MissHighwater on 4/3/2016 & rated 91 points: This has really improved over time and now has a lovely toasty depth to it. Drinking very well now. (3279 views)

Jean Laurent

Gold. Light. Eternal. Ephemeral. These describe the Champagnes of Jean Laurent. Jean's family has been growing wine in the village of Celles-sur-Ource for more than 1,000 years. The estate is situated in the Aube, an outlying Champagne district south of Marne that shares the same chalky soils as the heart of Champagne and Chablis.

Jean farms a total of 39 acres, split between Pinot Noir (30 acres) and Chardonnay (9 acres), with no Pinot Meunier. Though the Aube is unquestionably Pinot Noir territory and his flagship wine is the Blanc de Noirs, Jean has enjoyed spectacular success with his Blanc de Blancs, and is planting/purchasing more Chardonnay vines to meet demand.

The basic NV bruts (Blanc de Noirs, Blanc de Blancs and Rosé) are typically blended from three vintages, and aged a minimum of 3 years on the yeast. Vintage Champagnes are only produced in exceptional years and are generally released after 10 years of age. Jean also has a treasure cellar of older vintages and large format bottles that are disgorged and labeled to order. They are not inexpensive, but are an excellent option for those searching for a special jeroboam or the perfect anniversary bottle.

As a RM ("Recoltant Manipulant" - the French term for Grower's Champagne), Jean makes Champagnes exclusively from his own vineyards. Many consumers have begun to favor Grower's Champagne over the Grande Marques labels, which often offer high quality and a true house style, but little in the way of the expression of terroir, as the basic bruts are often blended from a wide range of Champagne districts. Jean Laurent is a prime example of how deeply traditional winemaking, estate-grown fruit, small batch vinification, and a fanatical devotion to quality can result in distinctive Champagnes of individuality and character.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
