Tasted by rldixon on 1/21/2022 & rated 93 points: This is a great example of a great, aged, Zin. Consumed over two nights. Very fragrant on opening. Dark cherries, blackberries, and an array of pepper/spices, balanced by resolved tannins perfectly mated to a weighty mouthfeel. This was amazing and while it was delicious! now, it can age further, I'd guess. (509 views)
Tasted by moodsm on 6/26/2019 & rated 89 points: Holding up very well. Decanted and enjoyed the last glass 2 hours later. Love how these Zins are enjoyable for many years. (962 views)
Tasted by papabluez on 10/22/2017 & rated 91 points: This is holding up really well. Good example to avoid claiming that Zins don't age well. Still some tannic structure with smoky black fruit & secondary spice starting to show about 10 minutes in. Fruit now giving way to more savory notes. Not sure how long the fruits will hold, but overall there's enough structure to wait awhile. (1344 views)
Tasted by ecola on 4/11/2016 & rated 90 points: Dark fruit with subtle spice. Full body with a smooth finish. (1775 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 4/8/2014 & rated 92 points: By the glass at the Four Seasons in Chicago. Bottle was just opened, it took about 20 minutes to show.

Nose is very ripe, oak black fruits, caramel.dark purple color. Palate is fruit forward, black raspberry, liqueur like texture, cassis, burnt sugar. Really nice Zin, if you like the style and varietal. Very full wine that needs some time to settle down. I think it will do better in a couple years, but drinks well now (2889 views)
Tasted by Bobhelge on 3/31/2014 & rated 89 points: I really did like the nose - oak, a lot of dark fruit - cassis, black raspberry and so on. A lot of acidity which overshadowed the tannins. (2305 views)
Tasted by RandomNeutral on 2/26/2013 & rated 88 points: Strong tannins very up front, but settling out. Purple color. Thought I got a hint of butter on the nose at first, but couldn't catch it again.
As the bottle sat during the evening, it mellowed a bit.
I'm not sure I could taste the price doubling of this bottle over a $13 Sonoma Count Old Vine Zin from Ravenswood.

I think this might harmonize with a year or two of laying down. We've got a few more bottles to let sit. (2863 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Sonoma County

Mendocino County

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
