Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.9 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 41 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Nostromo99 on 2/18/2023 & rated 88 points: The two recent notes seem unnecessarily apocalyptic. The bottle we shared last night was in great shape - plenty of fruit with a hint of vanilla oak. Some development, yes, but to me, this bottle was still in its prime. One last bottle in the cellar and I think there's plenty of time left to broach it. (390 views)
Tasted by rickswan on 3/26/2022 & rated 86 points: Second in a flight of 8. This wine is just past it’s prime and on the way down. (603 views)
Tasted by Rossodio on 5/24/2020 & rated 80 points: With about 30 minutes of air... drinkable... but this is clearly, clearly past peak. Purchased in 2009 and kept at 53F ever since with an immaculate cork and no signs of leakage, there are early and slight hints of oxidation/tewed fruit/tertiary flavors, practically entirely resolved tannins, both of which are great... but when set alongside the ghostly remains of bordeaux fruit, now thin and gaunt, along with near-nonexistent acidity, it paints a picture of what was likely a very nice wine in the past that saw better days likely 2-3 years ago before falling off. This does not strike me as a flawed bottle, but a tired one. If you have any bottles of this, drink up and give them a try. I would be interested to see if there is any life left in any other bottles at this point. (1266 views)
Tasted by ctjared on 11/10/2017: A lot of fruit still here, dusty tannins, good finish. great value. (2738 views)
Tasted by ctjared on 4/15/2017: Dark fruit, still fresh, good acidity and medium finish. Maybe a bit of alcohol at the end ? Good value. (3149 views)
Tasted by LIE-user on 3/29/2015 & rated 88 points: I always thought, this could have some further potential. But now I'am quite sure: this is it. Not bad, but lacking some roundness. (4661 views)
Tasted by curtispomeroy on 9/16/2014 & rated 90 points: Drinking very nicely at this point in time. No need to wait any longer. (5343 views)
Tasted by lkatz on 9/4/2014 & rated 90 points: drank very well...nicely integrated fruit and tannins...my last 2 bottles (4693 views)
Tasted by vsbastosx on 6/13/2014 & rated 87 points: Decanted for 1 hour.
A bit shy on the nose with flora scents, roasted coffee and very subtle vanilla. Full bodied, elegant, gentle tannins. Simple and uninspiring wine. (3510 views)
Tasted by richardkim on 5/17/2014 & rated 88 points: Medium bodied palate that is bright, with cassis and flint and acidity that gives lift. (2973 views)
Tasted by jeffal66 on 1/27/2014 & rated 90 points: Coming along well. A fairly smooth package with chocolate, earth, coffee, cherry and prune flavors, dusty tannins, good acidity and length. Dark and concentrated. Could easily age a couple more years. (2118 views)
Tasted by Furry Goat on 12/4/2013 & rated 89 points: Really good. Went great with filet. No formal notes. Drinking well right now, I don't think it can improve much. No rush though. (1822 views)
Tasted by Vmaster007 on 10/6/2013 & rated 85 points: inresting nose, good taste of dark cherries and a good balance of tannins. could still last a few more years (2066 views)
Tasted by lkatz on 6/10/2013 & rated 90 points: would benefit from more time in the bottle but relatively smooth with good fruit...went well with a steak and interesting to see how the rest of my bottles age (2263 views)
Tasted by mattyboy_ on 5/31/2013 & rated 87 points: Doesn't hold a candle to the 2009 Prima. Starting to fall apart already. Awash with tannin and volatile alcohol and muddled cassis fruit. (2315 views)
Tasted by JonGray on 3/31/2013 & rated 89 points: Drank with a big hot bowl of spicy veggie chilli - smooth, pleasant complexity with very mellow tannins - chili almost won but the Prima hung in there! (2010 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 3/2/2013 & rated 89 points: Deep red colour, little signs of age.
Strong cassis nose.
Dry in the mouth with blackcurrant fruit, plums, strong tannins.
Has improved from before but still probably needs a couple of years. Still very impressive right now with food. (1994 views)
Tasted by jeffal66 on 12/19/2012 & rated 91 points: New World-style BDX; complex and approachable. Read my write-up here: http://www.pavineco.com/chateau-carignan-prima/ (2393 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 9/9/2012 & rated 88 points: Surprisingly intense cassis up front (on the nose). In the mouth the tannins are still a little overwhelming - might be better in three or four years. (2511 views)
Tasted by mburke on 7/15/2012: Yum! (2761 views)
Tasted by ThatReeder on 5/27/2012 & rated 88 points: Nice, affordable Bordeaux. Black fruit, with candied cherry. Mellowed with a few years of age and light tannins. (2879 views)
Tasted by RunningMonkey on 3/30/2012 & rated 88 points: Deep dark fruit nose, palate of brambles and graphite minerality. Tight punchy tannins, pleasing medium/long finish. Not particularly complex or refined (yet) but still nice stuff. Give it some years. (2795 views)
Tasted by ekirby on 3/7/2012 & rated 88 points: Color is red plum at the edges quickly transistioning to deep plum, this wine appears to be unfiltered. The nose is pretty reticent, bottle was opened, then stoppered last night, but has notes of black fruit and brambles, nothing off putting. On the palate this is a simple but somewhat large, straight forward wine, with good balance between fruit and acidity. There are lots of wines of winds in this price range that are more complex and are also well made. (2878 views)
Tasted by psrv on 2/20/2012 & rated 88 points: PnP. Aromas and flavors of blackberries, dark fruits, oak, spice, and tannins. Good balance with a medium finish. Needs maybe another year or two for the tannins to integrate. (2734 views)
Tasted by Krautrocker on 1/27/2012 & rated 90 points: A great value Bordeaux with style. Classic notes but delicate and even. An exceedingly long finish with a round blackberry nose and currant, white pepper in the middle while still decidedly fruity. Great. (2701 views)

Garagiste (2/28/2008)
(PRIMA Carignan) Prima Dear Friends, This is a quintessential example of why 2005 Bordeaux still represents one of the best overall bargains in the wine-world. No, I’m not crazy - wine of this stature, at this price, is not very easy to find in the Cabernet dominated wine regions of the globe and certainly not in one of the a top vintages of the last 50 years. Directly across the Gironde from Pessac-Leognan (Haut Brion and La Mission), this Right Bank estate has the upper echelon in its sights. They are not a household name at present but that should change in the next month or so. The Prima is Chateau Carignan’s best wine from 40-60 year old organically raised Merlot and Cabernet vines and it is one we’ve watched since the original barrel tastings two years ago. This wine keeps improving and, now in bottle, the promise has been realized - it shows the deft touch of a woman winemaker intent on expressing the intensity of the vintage but retaining the cool climate origins of Bordeaux. It is a top 2005 bargain that should last for at least 10-15 years and be approachable during the entire course of its life. The finest quality for a reasonable price - that’s what 2005 Bordeaux is all about - not the $400 wines: We have a terrific price on this wine, even lower than at the winery cellar door. If you are interested in Bordeaux that few will have the chance to own, this wine is in very limited distribution. ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this price with perfect provenance 2005 Chateau Carignan Premier Cotes de Bordeaux Prima FIRST COME FIRST SERVED at this price up to 12/person until we run out Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Bord7370

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Entre-Deux-Mers

"Part of the problem with the terroir of the Entre Deux Mers appellation is the lack of mineral elements in the soil and the massive amount of forest land." - The Wine Cellar Insider
