Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Vstalam on 5/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Shockingly good given age. On the nose red and black fruit, wonderfully smooth / lithe texture halfway towards Pinot noir but nice tannin/structure on the finish. Paired perfectly with some brisket. Mike Smith is the man and his syrahs are great value. (732 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 4/24/2020 & rated 89 points: I drank this wine with Mike and Leah at the Wineberserker Zoom meeting. My first experience with this vineyard was the 2007 back in 2010 in Napa.
I really enjoyed that wine. I was ‘saving’ the 2011 (yes, that vintage) for a non wine geek dinner.

I opened the bottle 4 hours before my first taste. It was slow ox’d. First taste the wine looked pretty. It didn’t have the full Syrah body I was expecting. It was more of a Pinot Noir feel. As the Zoom meeting ended (7 hours after opening), the wine put on a little more weight. If you own this wine > drink now.

Not much change on day 2. (1081 views)
Tasted by Mtpisgah on 11/9/2018: PnP. Dark. Brambly. Stemmy. Very nice. (1198 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 9/23/2018 flawed bottle: Pop and pour and tasted from a Govino cup while out on a boat on a lake.
Corked!
Slight musty smell. Too bad as it showed good acidity and some black cherry and woodsy notes but the flavors were muted and not expressive. (1389 views)
Tasted by STM82 on 8/30/2017 & rated 92 points: Cork busted off while uncorking which was a red flag. However, it really opened up after an hour. Fleshed out with notes of smoked mead, bbq smoke, charred pit fruit, black sappy berries. Medium bodied and really came together nicely. Interested to see what the next bottle holds. (1806 views)
Tasted by wendyinwlv on 7/17/2017 & rated 91 points: Mellowed a lot since drinking the last bottle. Very yummy with pizza! (1270 views)
Tasted by maxmanx on 5/30/2017: Lighter than most Syrahs I drink; probably a result of the year. Really nice wine, and would buy more if I could find it. (1274 views)
Tasted by wendyinwlv on 12/4/2016 & rated 89 points: A little too astringent and tannin for me. Will try the next bottle in a year or so. Maybe it will mellow out more by then. (1216 views)
Tasted by *Vine* on 3/27/2016: Popped and poured, medium-plus youthful purple/ruby. Pronounced, extremely complex nose of red fruits, sage, fresh oregano, forest floor, conifer incense, olive brine, ham, clay, smoke...the list keeps going, absolutely fantastic. Medium to medium-plus body. Just as complex on the palate, this seamlessly combines savory with fruit in an absolutely gangbusters amalagam of both. Moderate-plus acidity works in perfect harmony with smooth, slightly astringent tannins on the lingering close.
An incredible juxtaposition of old world with new, this is benchmark CA Syrah. Drink now and over the next 8-10 years. (1613 views)
Tasted by rcmccall on 11/20/2015 & rated 94 points: I pnp'd this straight from the cellar and the nose and flavors are singing love songs to me. Another beauty that I just want to be alone with! (1464 views)
Tasted by The Wine Write on 10/28/2015 & rated 90 points: Popped & poured, drank over 2 nights. Nice nose, with meaty and savory notes. That carries to the palate, with some acidity on the finish. (1432 views)
Tasted by BinVA on 11/13/2014 & rated 90 points: Opened 2 days ago. Started with red fruit, acidity, medium tannin. Finishing really nice, tho lighter than most CA Syrah, which I'm really enjoying. Nice wine from a tough vintage (1677 views)
Tasted by oceanspirit on 2/9/2014 & rated 90 points: Decanted for three hours - having a glass ahead of the beef stew. The wine has a nice bright red color, moderate and pleasant nose with hints of leather. Strong fruit, a bit tart, but clean finish and good body. (1789 views)
Tasted by gharter on 1/7/2014 flawed bottle: This bottle corked. (1446 views)
Tasted by gharter on 1/7/2014: First bottle was corked. Second bottle popped and poured. This wine needs time. Started with a muted nose. Eventually gave up olive, black pepper,, smoke and a gamey nose. The flavors needed time to show themselves. With time, it expressed olive, smoked meats, black pepper and a hint of gaminess. The finish benefitted with time as well. It started out slightly harsh, but then softened to a nice smooth finish. The tannins were still there showing it will benefit with a few more years in the bottle. (1575 views)
Tasted by mye on 1/7/2014 & rated 91 points: PnP. Dark purple. Spicey with a touch of gamey and blood/iron notes.

Delicious but a bit heavy to 'sip'. would recommend drinking with food. (1787 views)
Tasted by Meerlust on 12/22/2013 & rated 92 points: Inky, black color with purple rim. The nose is very primary with powerful olive, smoked meats, and pepper notes. The youthful palate is a terrific blend of olives, plums, smoked meats, lavender, and pepper. There is balanced acidity and well managed tannins in this medium-bodied wine. The finish is long, dark, and structured. Overall, this is built like a Cornas with more refinement, so I expect terrific things from this wine in the future, even though I like it quite a bit right now. (1386 views)
Tasted by jaxpaj on 12/16/2013: This has the Syrah funk that some LOVE (similar to Cayuse). Smoke, Earth, tobacco, and spice. A wonderful pairing with a fine cigar.. (1809 views)
Tasted by gigmoney on 9/6/2013 flawed bottle: CORKED! DAMNIT! (1529 views)
Tasted by Mtpisgah on 8/4/2013 & rated 94 points: No formal notes but this wine needs some air time. It was excellent the first night and just phenomenal the second. Suggest a good four hour decant at minimum. (1575 views)
Tasted by gigmoney on 4/1/2013 & rated 95 points: No formal notes on this one. 4 hr slow-ox. Other wines that night- 10- l'aventure estate cuvee, 10- Larkmead, 10-staglin with Braised beef. The response on this wine from friends ITB were- "WOW, what is that? This las madres syrah actually paired best with our meal. Of course when I mentioned price, they were extremely interested. Kudos to Mike and Leah! (1657 views)
Tasted by MikeZ on 3/22/2013 & rated 91 points: Well done and reasonable value at $40. Olive tapenade and some notes of game on those nose with nice dark fruit and a peppery finish.

If you are in to the northern rhones this is certainly worth a try. I've been impressed with the wines and value from Myriad Cellars. (1564 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Napa / Sonoma

SONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level.
The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.

Carneros
