Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 57 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 11/5/2023 & rated 92 points: Deep golden core. Amazing nose of pure peach and apricot. Medium-sweet, wonderfully rich and concentrated, yet built on a steely core of acidity that keeps everything in impeccable balance. The 2001s continue to impress. This is utterly beautiful. (562 views)
Tasted by vide on 4/2/2023 & rated 93 points: A wonderful wine with a great balance of honey-lemon on fruit and nose, with a lovely clarity and purity with great soft acidity. (899 views)
Tasted by Matt T on 2/12/2022 & rated 92 points: Perhaps not the best stored bottle, but still alive and kicking with plenty of time left. Dark golden color with lots of acid to balance the fruit. Long finish. Really nice wine. Opened a bottle of the 2002 version of this wine from the same source about a week before that was completely oxidized, so this really showcases the strength of the 2001 vintage. (1706 views)
Tasted by dsamuel on 6/27/2021 & rated 92 points: Dark gold/amber in color
Explosive aromas of apricot/ banana/ tropical fruit - mango
Palate shows moderate RS but searing acidity which cuts through - the RS is probably way more than expected on tasting
Really drinking nicely at this point and appears eternal (2141 views)
Tasted by Order66 on 3/21/2021 & rated 91 points: This has scents of straight mango purée. Some notes of mandarin, honey, and pineapple but the assertive flavour note is ripe mangos. Quite juicy, lightly sweet with mellowed acidity. I’d say it’s drinking stellar now. (2483 views)
Tasted by dsamuel on 5/29/2020 & rated 92 points: No notes taken but drinking very well presently. Just a classic and well extracted Riesling. Moderate RS but enough to keep it perfectly balanced. Fantastic now but will last for years. (2604 views)
Tasted by jhbehrens on 3/6/2020 & rated 93 points: Beautiful depth, golden colour. Quite sweet and low alcohol so great as an aperitif. Showing very well right now. (2496 views)
Tasted by TXRhoneRanger on 2/22/2020 & rated 96 points: All full throttle Riesling LH all the way. In a great spot. On day 2 even more layered with honeyed gold apricot. Sonnaofagun. I should have bought more. Delicious! (2225 views)
Tasted by MikeJK on 1/16/2020 & rated 92 points: Although the complexity, concentration and length are all there for an outstanding, fully developed Riesling... I think it could have used a touch more acid. Based on other reviews, I may have had an improperly stored bottle... purchased second hand. (1887 views)
Tasted by mhudes on 12/31/2019 & rated 93 points: New Year's Eve at cousin Mathew's. PnP Golden in color. Nose of tropical fruit and lemon zest. Honey, mango, apricot and perhaps kumquat on the palate. A little flint or mineral in the background. Long finish. Very nice! (1691 views)
Tasted by jhbehrens on 7/14/2018 & rated 92 points: Dark gold colour, intense, complex aromas of citrus peel, honey and a little petrol on the nose. Full bodied due to its residual sugar balanced well by fresh acidity. Quite a lot of sulfite on the nose. Still in excellent condition with years ahead of it. (2322 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 3/17/2018 & rated 98 points: Opened with Emilio at dinner. 3rd time I have had this. Solid cork. Medium yellow color. This had very little petrol. Still vibrant and lively but very deep and developed. Loaded with apricot and tropical fruit notes. Minerally finish. Just an excellent wine and a very serious candidate very greatest Auslese made in the spectacular 2001 vintage. 98 points. (2673 views)
Tasted by WhatsSamSipping on 5/7/2017 & rated 92 points: Wonderful richness, texture, and grace. The sweetness had calmed down and all the fruits were shown with great clarity. (3087 views)
Tasted by fitzi on 12/20/2016: First of these I've opened in four years - mainly because I haven't been able to find them in the crawl space : ) This wine is testament to the capacity of wine to develop with cellar time, having transformed in character completely from a wine of pure finesse and needle-point acidity to a medium-bodied dessert wine in which the acidity appears as the backbone to a broad, well-buffered, texturally pillowy, with prominent but balanced sweetness and depth, as well as finesse. Quite a wine. Shows better after a day open on the counter, so no rush, imho. (3448 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 8/13/2016: At Rolling Spring Roll - it took som time to really emerge, showing primarily syrupy sugar. The fruit remains fresh and vivid. In time, it developed more interesting nuances, while a balancing petrol notes sustained. I suspect this could get better still as the sweetness gives way to mature expressions of the fruit and acidity. Quite a lovely drink now though. (3743 views)
Tasted by essconsults on 6/18/2016 & rated 95 points: The last of three bottles over the past 5 years and the best. One of the most interesting and, easily, one of the most delicious wines one can drink. The flavors just go on and on. With fabulous food at Cosme, NYC super upscale Haute-Mexican. (3197 views)
Tasted by DHJ1968 on 10/2/2015: Big and beautiful yet lithe and feline. Rippling and oh so fast. Utterly compelling and completely irresistible. Fresh fruit mashed by stony granite. Of truly freakish proportions and quixotic depths . Like Bo Jackson. The contradiction that is the essence of Riesling. Brilliant! (3913 views)
Tasted by sp4388 on 3/20/2015 & rated 94 points: Awesome peach and tropical fruit flavors, ripping acidity perfectly balancing the sweetness. (3297 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 3/29/2014 & rated 95 points: Golden color. Gorgeous bouquet of apricot, stone and ripe peaches with a subtle petrol undertone. Like biting into a ripe, dripping peach, also apple, stone and melon. Terrific balancing acidity; long, lingering finish. Just wonderful stuff- thanks J3. It will no doubt hold for a long time, but I don't know that I could keep my hands off of it. It's in a great place and I see no reason to wait any longer. (3909 views)
Tasted by thelostverse on 3/29/2014 & rated 95 points: Opened by J3 at Sun Wah. Second time I've had this in the last year. This is a beauty, but did morph a bit at the end of the evening in a concerning way. Pop and pour, with beautiful notes of tropical citrus and petrol. Everything in perfect balance at this point. However, by the end of the evening, I thought the sweetness became cloying and vastly detracted from the earlier experience. Perhaps this was a result of the lengthy evening and the bottle sitting at room temp for several hours. I did not detract from the score because there's no way this bottle would have lasted as long as it did if there weren't 14 other bottles open as well. (3502 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 3/29/2014 & rated 96 points: Jcubed brought this.Clear deep yellow color. Just a beautiful well balanced wine which is just as good as when I had this on release in 2003. More serious now than 11 years ago and a little deeper. Still tropical with notes of pineapple and crisp apple balanced by solid acidity. Glad I have 3 of these left. No hurry to drink these but they are ready if you want to. 96 points. (3381 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 8/20/2013: Full yellow. Broad, deep ripe peach and some sulfur which was slow to dissipate. Moderately sweet with a touch of honey. Rich and surprisingly loose for a 2001. (3420 views)
Tasted by thelostverse on 5/29/2013 & rated 95 points: Opened by Dan at CWM dinner at Thai Cuisine. Beautiful petrol notes with citrus on the nose. Tropical citrus and spice on the palate with a long finish. Beautiful. (3017 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 3/12/2013: Light golden. Honeyed tangerine, a little fusel and some peach. Medium weight (definitely not Mosel lightness), rich, moderately sweet, but well circumscribed by acidity. Delicious Auslese approaching BA level, probably approaching peak drinking over the next several years. (2898 views)
Tasted by jasonh on 1/13/2013: EWG @ Ración: Wow. This is just plain explosive. So much going on at every level. I loved to lemony waxy fruit. Great acidity. Hard not to love. (2858 views)

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)
