Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 78 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Anna@WineCellar on 4/23/2023 & rated 92 points: Red, beginning brownish in rim, precipitate, high intensity. Developed, medium intensity, nuanced nose. Spicy with black pepper, dark fruit and some meaty notes. Dry, medium(+) acidity, medium(+), medium(+) body, 12,5%. Fruitiness and all aromas found in nose. Add some charcuterie and juniper. Velvet tannins. Very good length with juniper smoked sausage.
Perfect, just as a Graillot should be! (433 views)
Tasted by Jahull03 on 7/3/2022: Totally in the zone now after an hour’s decant - the “right” maturity level for me, for this wine, to get the secondary softness and kinder tannins, some fruit coming to the forefront, and still get a touch of the brine the wine exhibited in earlier years. (833 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 10/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Dark and savory nose with brine, olives, and dark cherry flavors. Nice acidity with medium tannins and more black fruit, dark olives, and violet flavors on the palate. Nice finish. (1914 views)
Tasted by lucnapo@gmail.com on 7/4/2020: Bon Cote du Rhone (1927 views)
Tasted by MatLot on 5/31/2020 & rated 91 points: Beau poivre toujours du rendez-vous jaime les bouteilles de graillot. Miam (1884 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 3/25/2020 & rated 92 points: Dark fruit notes, black olives, meat, violets, and iron on the super classic Northern Rhône nose. Medium-high tannins with more dark fruit and berries, as well as savory herbs on the palate. Nice finish. Quite young still, but drinking well. Lovely wine! 92-93 (1791 views)
Tasted by LenaLasse on 9/15/2019 & rated 82 points: Provning Sjöberg 2019-09-14 (1828 views)
Tasted by theronware on 9/2/2019 & rated 91 points: Beautiful now. Loads of blackcurrants, a little funk, an undertow of riverbed stone. (1342 views)
Tasted by CPSchoeff on 8/31/2019 & rated 94 points: Deep opaque red to the rim. A: very strong game, peppered jerky, olive, and ash. F: iron, blood, graphite, red plum and cherry in a smoldering fire. This is at once deep and concentrated yet not weighty. The tannins are present but integrated. Everything is hitting on all cylinders here. Go for it and crack one open. And bring it by if you’re in the neighborhood! (1243 views)
Tasted by Janstan on 9/4/2018 & rated 84 points: Cherries, peppers. Thin, perhaps too young, will save my next bottle for aT LEAST 1 year. Definitely needs food (1647 views)
Tasted by aekenback on 1/19/2018 & rated 91 points: Wonderful nose typical for cool climate syrah. Creamy blueberries, black pepper and loads of bacon. A little bit thin and tight in the mouth, at least compared to what was expected from the nose. Don’t drink that much from Graillot, should probably do it more often. (1940 views)
Tasted by Dima Angert on 9/30/2017: Leather, forest floor, pepper... Very classic, a bit "too serious". (2078 views)
Tasted by pcarmich on 9/3/2017 & rated 94 points: Dark plums, cherries on the nose. The palate is all black olives on the attack, transitioning to a velvety cherry cake, before a slightly acid finish balanced by very fine tannins. A very refined drink with only 13% alcohol that simply invites good, simple food. (2238 views)
(2845 views)
Tasted by Kitura on 12/30/2016: Really fantastic wine. Juicy red fruits up front with typical Syrah notes of black fruits, garrigue and pepper providing a backbone. Really enjoyed this! (2315 views)
Tasted by Chasse_spleen on 4/2/2016 & rated 88 points: This wine provokes mixed reactions. Some of us think this is too much barnyard, and a "cooked" feeling, while I view this as a wine with personality. Compared to my note some years ago this is so much better now. The acidity is not dominating, rather balancing the ripening fruit, providing a good backbone. (2842 views)
Tasted by Kriz on 2/22/2016 & rated 90 points: Big syrah nose, nicely perfumed. With sweet and fresh sour fruit on both nose and palate. Great freshness and power. Very good syrah effort. (2759 views)
Tasted by FransS on 11/2/2015 & rated 86 points: Not in the same league as the '10; the bouquet is very nice, but there is little volume and the acidity is rather high. (2921 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 10/31/2015 & rated 88 points: Retailer tasting (@ O in H): Dark fruits, leather and minerals in the bouquet. On the palate the same impressions, cassis, a lot of acidity and sticky tannin. A mouth full. Note extremely refined, but a few years of ageing will do the wine good. Around 2018+? 87 - 88? (3156 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 10/23/2015: Big smoky, stemsy lift to the aroma. You get some menthol and tar with air. It is dense and chewy but quite compact and linear. Fresh berry fruits are nicely tempered by the wine's savoury elements. The finish is dry and chewy. Terrific with a spicy, slow cooked lamb dish. (2637 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 9/18/2015 & rated 77 points: Haskell Vineyards Tasting Session (Haskell Vineyards): (Tasted Blind): Mid to deep garnet colour the nose presents black pepper, tobacco, cigarette ash and wood smoke. A chalky texture on entry, but the fruit appears slightly compromised (bruised), suggesting oxidation. There is also a stemmy carbonic element which help but I found a mousy undertones. Short finish with nutty notes. (146 views)
Tasted by Yostie on 8/28/2015 & rated 89 points: Just popped & poured which was my mistake. Should have decanted it before we left for dinner. Full of smoke & earth tones which got better as the evening went on. (2088 views)
Tasted by EhrlichDY on 8/26/2015: Popped and poured and consumed over two days. Perhaps this is closing up or entering an awkward phase. More tannin and acid than my last bottle earlier this year. Still showing bacon fat and smokiness but not as much fruit and harmony. Maybe it's time to forget about for a while. (2036 views)
Tasted by Jimywags on 7/18/2015 & rated 92 points: Popped and let sit in the glass for around 30 minutes with occasional swirling. Quintessential french syrah in the best possible way. Bacon fat, smoked blackberries, maybe a little whole cluster-ness. Maybe a hair tight but the porkiness, dark fruit, and tannin formed an excellent balance that heightened with each 30 minutes of time. Glad I have one more bottle. 92pts. (1752 views)
Tasted by cfk49 on 6/26/2015 & rated 85 points: Cellared since original release. Disappointing. Unlike previous bottles. Lacking fruit and expressiveness. Tannic. Closing up? (1932 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
