Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by VlgJeff on 10/26/2023 & rated 92 points: Again, slo-oxed for 15 minutes with red fruits and some earth on the nose. The medium bodied palate showed these red fruits and earth along with a dose of spice. The acidity continues to be juicy, and the tannins were resolved. A very satisfying bottle which should continue to hold for another couple of years but no reason to wait. (194 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 9/21/2023 & rated 92 points: This wine continues to drink well after a 15 minute slo-ox. This bottle was as good as our previous bottle on 4/5/23. Lots of red fruit and earth notes on the nose and palate along with a heavy dose of spice, juicy acidity and resolved tannins. Should continue to hold but clearly in a good place now. (190 views)
Tasted by Kloseframe on 8/6/2023 & rated 92 points: This is still drinking well. I love the mineral back bone to these Shale Terrace wines. It's a little hot, on night two that has seemed to mellow. I could drink these Scherrer zins every night! (227 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 4/5/2023 & rated 92 points: Five months since our previous bottle of this enjoyable wine and this bottle was even more so. Slo-oxed for about 15 minutes which was enough to let the wine open. The nose was greeted with both bright red and dark red fruit notes, plus a touch of underlying earth. The medium bodied palate has a core of dark red fruit, some brighter red fruit, a good amount of spice, some earth, resolved tannins, and juicy acidity. Should continue to hold for some time. (347 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 11/8/2022 & rated 91 points: Based on my previous TN (7/9/22) this bottle was decanted for 30 minutes and the results were virtually identical to that, with the addition of some darker red fruits on the nose and palate. Should hold for another couple of years. (345 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 7/9/2022 & rated 91 points: Based on my previous TN (4/21/20) this bottle was decanted for 30 minutes (some sediment) with positive results. The red fruits were more prominent on the nose, along with some earth. The medium bodied palate enhanced its core of earth, red fruit, and spice while adding a touch of pepper. The acidity continues to be juicy, and the tannins were resolved. A very satisfying bottle of the lighter of Fred's zinfandels which should continue to hold for another couple of years. (317 views)
Tasted by bound4er on 7/14/2021 & rated 90 points: Taking on a slight Port aroma on the nose. Palate is vibrant. I'm guessing this is close to its peak drinking window. (558 views)
Tasted by jreis on 12/18/2020: Drank alongside the 2013 Old and Mature Vines. Popped and poured at cellar temp. Boy the wines have some distinct differences. Dark earth, flinty minerals, oregano and smoky black fruit on the nose. Nice texture, sweet and savory black fruit and still some primary tannins on the finish. Cries out for some bbq brisket. Just in the very early stages of its drinking window with many good years ahead of it. (583 views)
Tasted by bound4er on 5/1/2020 & rated 92 points: Very satisfying Zin. Nothing overdone here, just a well made wine that is nicely balanced and equally enjoyable with or without food. More CA Zin should be made this way. (585 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 4/21/2020 & rated 90 points: Slo-oxed for 10 minutes, but could use another 10 or 20. A bit of funk on the nose, but it dissipates to show red fruit and earth. There is some sediment. The medium bodied palate has a core of red fruit, some dark red fruit, a good amount of spice, some earth, resolved tannins, and juicy acidity. A very satisfying bottle of the lighter of Fred's zinfandels. Should hold for another couple of years. (519 views)
Tasted by BoulderWine on 3/18/2020 & rated 92 points: The last of my 2013 Shale Terrace. Still has gobs of fruit. Well-structured and balanced but with the backbone to go another few years. (514 views)
Tasted by BoulderWine on 12/30/2019 & rated 92 points: True to my review from nearly 4 years ago, this wine has evolved very nicely. The fruit has faded ever so slightly - will try again tomorrow to see if it opens more - so maybe it's time to drink up. A very food-friendly wine (think Italian red), drank well with the chicken lasagne from Big John's. (434 views)
Tasted by vin0vin0 on 3/30/2016 & rated 90 points: Fred does it again! This is my 1st taste of the '13 futures. Beautiful Shale Terrace zin with loads of ripe blackberries, black cherries, a hint of baking spices, well integrated fine grained tannins, zingy acidity and a medium long finish. (1539 views)
Tasted by BoulderWine on 2/28/2016 & rated 92 points: Lighter in color with lots of red fruit. Likely more reserved than what most folks look for in a Zin but i think that this is going to evolve into a very elegant wine. Enjoyable now but I would hang on for at least a couple more years. Glad that I bought the futures. (1301 views)
Tasted by mhauser on 1/26/2016: So fucking good. (1312 views)
Tasted by mhauser on 1/11/2016: Simply awesome. Maybe the best Shale yet. A perfect balance of fruit, spice, tannin, acidity, depth and profoundness. A wonderful, wonderful wine. (1236 views)
Tasted by zinfomaniac on 11/4/2015 & rated 92 points: I can't express enough the pleasure it was to enjoy this over two nights. The nose offered baking spices, black pepper and violets. The palate was bright tart dark fruit with plums and a mineral driven core. The finish had very nice length focused on cherries and spice. (1282 views)
Tasted by greenblanket on 10/25/2015 flawed bottle: Weird. This wine seemed very advanced in it's bottle age.
Compared to the last one I opened. I'm thinking it was flawed in some way (950 views)
Tasted by greenblanket on 4/14/2015: Young but with notable depth and substance underlain with the usual shale characteristics. Could be a shale for the ages? (1237 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 4/11/2015: Dense, black, silky and full of acidic energy. Black core, fine bitter smoky tannins. Serious wine. Needs some bottle age. Very good. (654 views)

Scherrer Winery

Producer website

Scherrer Winery produces small batches of Pinot Noir, Old Vine Zinfandel, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvingon from the Russian River and Alexander Valleys.

Everyone seems to believe in doing minimal manipulation with the goal of letting the vineyard site speak. Additionally, I try to make good tasting wine that will age well. Since grapes do not walk off the vines and into the winery, let alone into barrels and bottles, we must actually do something with the grapes and wine along the way from time to time. Rest assured that I do try to get in the way as little as possible while trying to achieve the desired outcome. Most of our work is done and choices are made during the harvest season. Afterward, there is little reason to touch a wine on a wonderful trajectory. With the exception of our Dry Rosé, all our wines are bottled without fining or filtration. I regularly underplay the wines' provenance rather than overplay it. This causes some confusion and frustrates merchants who sell our wines. For this, I offer my apologies. I am, however, unlikely to change this deeply engrained habit.

Zinfandel

ZAP: Zinfandel Advocates & Producers | Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wikipedia-Zinfandel

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
