Acidity keeps this wine rolling forward. Molten tannins (still a baby metal bite) and beautiful black olives. Absolutely delicious. Aromas include black olives, leather saddle and spice. The fruit is towards mature berries with acidity and heft. Well balanced, long and complex. Absolutely lovely!

 Tasted by chevalblanc1959 on 7/18/2022 & rated 90 points: Opened and decanted last night hoping to enjoy it with an amazing grade 5 Japanese wagyu sirloin steak. What a disappointment, totally acidic and not much else. Out of curiosity I decided to pour it back into the bottle and give it 24 hours time. Well, lo and behold, tonight another bottle emerged. Quite full bodied, it had shed almost all the acidic part and in its place a good taste of red fruit emerged. Really enjoyed it with some Stilton cheese. What a great surprise! (1559 views)

Outstanding balance and very good length. Really at a perfect place right now, fully mature and full of verve. Plenty of structure to keep it going for years, but you should try it right now. Deep and spicy on the nose, licorice, spice cake, molasses - blackstrap, really. Yummy, and gained a significant florality with more air. The palate is tannic tannic, brutally; it has fruit, and loads of acidity, but this is many years from resolving. Good, dense length displays its fundamentally sound balance. Wait... Cedar, vanilla, blueberry, some tar. Really smells classic old world. Palate classic old world as well. Hard to ID specific fruits. Definitely vanilla and wood with some combo of sweet, tart, dark and bright fruit on the mid palate. Pretty complicated (or subtle) flavors besides the vanilla / wood. Not sure if wood is overpowering or the fruit is understated. Still lots of tannin left. 2nd night, if I didn't know what this was, I'd guess it to be a Chateau Musar! Developed quite a bit of that typical Musar nose and palate. Still drank very nicely 2nd night through remainder of bottle. (2900 views)

Significant sediment, when first opened this wine was very tart and closed - two hours in the decanter have made quite a difference: the wine has relaxed, put on weight and the acidity has become less searing. The wine is quite dense and powerful, but secondary flavours dominate, still a trifle tannic on the finish. (3678 views)

 Tasted by Recoveringimporter on 12/18/2011 & rated 90 points: I opened 2 bottles this weekend. The first bottle was very disappointing. The nose was amazing, the aroma was overpowering and spoke of red fruits reduced and extracted. The color was violet with moderate bricking. That's where the fun ended. The wine was very acidic and uni-dimensional. It reminded me of an old school, tired Spanish wine. It begged for food to calm the acidity, with food it was acceptable; though not remarkable 1/4 of the bottle went untouched. So I decided it's either a bad bottle, or I must drink all I have now. Sunday night, opened bottle #2, popped-poured..... (used Venturi). I crossed my fingers and brought the glass to my nose: strawberry, leather, smoke but all very subtle. I thought to myself this is not going to be good. The color was much richer than bottle 1, with less bricking (it was almost imperceptible, just a hint). In the mouth it was balanced, silky smooth, fully resolved, elegant, a touch, just a touch of mint (like a Spanish version of Martha's) . A long and chewy aftertaste. All in all... an B+/A- for Bottle 2. I will let this sit a couple of hours and then try it again. I have 3 more bottles to go. I hope they are all more like bottle 2. (4376 views)

Decanted 1 hr, consumed over 9 hours. Alion’s best drinking window was between hrs 3 – 5. It’s weakness was its sad nose concentration, but its strength was its monstrous favor concentration. Whereas the nose gave up nice, but only modest notes of floral perfume, sweet ripe black cherry and plum by hour 3, and smokey/vanilla notes by hours 5 -7, the wall of concentrated fruit left a solid 30-45 second finish from the brim to the dregs.
Alion is just entering the beginning of its peak window which should last into 2013 when is will likely start a slow and shallow decline.

Bottom line: Alion, only average+ on nose elements, but super intensive in the taste and fruit boldness; Aleza, by comparison, a lot lighter, but very stylistic in everyway. 90 pts Alion, 92 pts Alenza. (3616 views)

Fragrant and complex nose of dark fruit, spices, earthy mushrooms and truffle. Less impressive on the palette, with the fruit having a slightly modern extraction but blended with nice old world tempranillo characteristics and finishes strong with nice acidity. (3415 views)

Tinto Fino

Tinto Fino or Tinta del País is the local name in Ribera del Duero for Tempranillo, probably Spain’s most famous grape. The name relates to the early fruit ripening, ideal for the harsh continental climate and short growing season of the region.

In Ribera del Duero Tempranillo yields smaller berries, loose clusters and tougher skin, which encourages more skin-to-juice contact and promotes full-bodied, powerful wines that still retain the grape’s renowned elegance. It’s a vibrant, aromatic variety that offers spicy, red fruit aromas and flavors.

The combination of power and elegance represents Tempranillo’s signature in Ribera del Duero, and the region’s singular contribution to winemaking today.

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
