Community Tasting Notes (average 93.3 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 139 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by imsilver78 on 5/12/2024 & rated 92 points: I'm a Quintessa fan but my last two 2010 bottles fell a little short of what I have come to expect, perhaps just a little past peak. There was still some ripe red fruit with secondary notes of spices and pencil lead. Palate was a bit thin with a little heat on the tail, tannins were sparse but fine, not at all grippy. Finish was medium long. To be fair, my bottles were marked as having questionable cellaring before I acquired them in 2018 which may have impacted the experience. Typically, Quintessa is a solid 95+ for me, even in weak years so this was a bit of a disappointment. I would look forward to trying it again with a clean cellaring history. (131 views)
Tasted by Cholera on 2/24/2024 & rated 95 points: 2 hour decant and tasted. Dark and brooding with intense plum and dark cherries flavor with well integrated tannins.
Herbal notes with graphite dustiness. (720 views)
Tasted by chuckos77 on 11/26/2023 & rated 95 points: Last bottle may have been flawed as this was excellent. No age issues and smooth with good fruit expression of mostly black currant and blackberry. Slight smokiness came through. Beautiful wine and drinking well (1091 views)
Tasted by sstein19 on 12/22/2022 & rated 95 points: Dark violet in color. First nose of smoke, oak, and dark berries. Second nose of dark berries. Blueberry and black raspberry. Very mellow, however, the tanins are still there. Smooth with a very dry finish. (2602 views)
Tasted by Roman Empire on 9/4/2022 & rated 95 points: Decanted for about an hour and served with dinner. The smell of this wine is heaven, inviting you to drink it sooner than you should. I was surprised how bright this 12 year old wine was at the front Clear dark cherries then a longer dry finish. So nicely balanced. A wonderful wine. I didn’t want the bottle to end. I’ve not found Boudreauxs that I love ( so much more to try) but this bourdeaux style wine is in my top 3 Napa wines of all time. Thank you quintessa (2723 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 8/20/2022 & rated 93 points: Brawnier than I remember. Paired nicely with prime beef. Lost out to an amazing Larkmead LMV, but hey, I’m not complaining. (2764 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 2/1/2022 & rated 93 points: Truffle on the nose. Silky tannins with pitch black fruit and a mild white pepper finish. Seductive. (3344 views)
Tasted by wconnolly on 8/18/2021 & rated 93 points: Elegant layered Bordeaux style blend. I will admit I prefer this more complex style to the also popular fruit bomb. Not that this was short on fruit. Plenty of rich black and blue fruit but layered with chocolate, herbs and an earthiness. This was reminiscent of a good Pauillac. This is drinking very well right now. The tannins are present but soft. Just enough to provide the right structure. Full bodied with a lingering earthy finish. (3896 views)
Tasted by wconnolly on 2/6/2021: Rich, deep, ruby color. Plum, cassis, eucalyptus with a graphite edge on the palate. Robust and full bodied with medium, silky tannins and a medium finish. Showing no signs of diminution. Elegant and layered. (3612 views)
Tasted by joeypruett on 12/26/2020 & rated 97 points: Decanted for 3 hours and paired with Christmas Dinner, one of the best Cabs we've ever had. Explosive nose of chocolate covered blue & black berries upon pouring, which softened after some time with air. Full bodied intensity with herbs, chocolate and dark fruits on the palette. Worth the wait for a 10 year old wine of this quality, but probably had a few years left in it. Will revisit again in 2025. (3252 views)
Tasted by AAJR on 12/26/2020 & rated 94 points: Splash decanted - similar experience to last tasting(see notes). Perfect pairing with roast. (3117 views)
Tasted by KTelaak_Buffalo on 11/28/2020 & rated 92 points: This wine is drinking well now. Full bodied but not fruit forward or jammy. Great balance. Perfect touch of tannins. Satisfying complex finish. Once again the wine faded after about 3 hours. (2890 views)
Tasted by JJN on 11/5/2020 & rated 92 points: took a while to open up (2512 views)
Tasted by KTelaak_Buffalo on 10/25/2020 & rated 92 points: With a 1 hour decant it was delicious. Deep fruits, enjoyable tannins. After 3+ hours, not so much. It faded. Not enough power to keep up and grow. Drink soon after opening and consider drinking in the next 6-12 months. (1839 views)
Tasted by HodgieMJ on 6/14/2020 & rated 95 points: Gorgeous. Vanilla and cedar on the nose. Balanced, velvety tannins. Big elegant fruit. Blackberry, currant and black cherry dance across the palate. A refined seductress I wish I could dance with one more time. (2604 views)
Tasted by Vailman on 4/7/2020 & rated 91 points: I agree this wine was pleasant, displaying dark fruits and good structure, but given the price paid and the time cellared I think the resulting qpr is low. (2812 views)
Tasted by stevegpg on 4/4/2020 & rated 93 points: Similar notes to Jan as I noted. We decanted this for about 30 minutes this time. Fabulous wine. Served with grilled N.Y. strip steaks (2393 views)
Tasted by Mrdundon on 3/21/2020 & rated 93 points: Drinking very well now. Tannins have mellowed. (2394 views)
Tasted by bluedog on 1/26/2020 & rated 96 points: Right in the wheelhouse — drinking really well now. Ample structure, yet soft and approachable. Delicious! (2683 views)
Tasted by willfab60 on 1/23/2020 & rated 91 points: Nice . Mostly black fruit . Drink soon. It’s on a downhill trend. (1970 views)
Tasted by stevegpg on 1/18/2020 & rated 91 points: Did not decant but poured two glasses which sat for about 90 minutes before tasting. Strong dark fruit on the nose and in initial taste. Fruit slowly faded and secondary flavors of spice, cedar, graphite(?), began to show. After about 3 hours fruit was hard to distinguish, but overall very balanced and nuanced.
Served with braised short ribs.
A great wine, but I think now is the time to drink, not sure how much longer it has. (1674 views)
Tasted by ScottPreston on 9/29/2019 & rated 96 points: Outstanding. Rich, but not flabby. A lot of fruit here, but all holds together tightly. This is in a very good spot and recommend consuming now. (2416 views)
Tasted by yelnak on 8/18/2019 & rated 92 points: Let it breathe (2340 views)
Tasted by richshoes on 6/1/2019 & rated 91 points: Pretty disappointing relative to other Quintessas, its peers and price point. Wine was uneven and confused...just really never grabs you. At least the refined exquisite structure of Quintessa was still present. Kept waiting for the wine to impress me but it never did. (2606 views)
Tasted by Murf130 on 5/27/2019 & rated 95 points: We never decant anymore unless there is a concern for sediment.
Bottle tasted prime. Tannins are still strong followed by the heat. Still has several more years to go. Popped this cork on Memorial Day in honor of Raider 04, a Marine Corps KC-130 aircrew that was lost on 1/9/2002. Semper Fidelis Friends. (2491 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
