Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by pbaek on 1/6/2021: Still going strong, this is lean, showing marks of flowers, smoked meat, pepper, tobacco and olives. There’s a green note as well. Airy, light, delicious Syrah at peak I guess. (741 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 6/28/2017: Last bottle of a wine that has provided a lot of pleasure. Meat, pepper, olives and fruit in pinpoint balance. I am not philosophically opposed to points, but I don't assign them and I don't usually comment in that context. But . . . if 90 points or so is average around here (not sure that is true, but scores seem to kind of cluster there) this should be scored a good solid step up from that. (1838 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 12/11/2016: Great tasting stuff, with sweet grapey fruit, olive tapenade and some black pepper spice. Medium bodied, delightful. (2160 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 11/15/2016: I continue to be a big fan of this wine. Delicious forward NRhone Syrah. Easy drinking and that's no lefthanded compliment. I will drink the rest of these over the next year or two. (2223 views)
Tasted by WMWG on 10/26/2016 & rated 87 points: Good bright/ dark contrast in the form of bright, high-toned and cool berry fruit that is tempered by brooding pepper and meaty tones. Nice earthiness with a touch of that red floral, rhododendron bush/ rose petal profile that I always get from these. A touch of astringency late in the finish gives some added lift.

Good to Very Good (2262 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 7/29/2016 & rated 91 points: Couldn't keep my hands off this. Wanted to try another and this seems to be showing even better than the last. The nose is of bacon, smoke, tar, thyme, creosote, granite, blueberries, and plum jam. The palate has low dusty tannin and moderate acid. The finish feels a bit clipped so perhaps this wont age terribly long, but I'll try to hold mine a few more years to find out. (2998 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 4/9/2016 & rated 93 points: Peter Bothe's 41st Birthday (Boneyard Bistro): So much lighter than the Jamet I'm used to (the Cote-Rotie) but really nice bottle. Light on its feet but could still hold up to barbecue meat. Would be perfect red to serve with barbecue on a hot summer afternoon. Still has time left. (1796 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 1/27/2016: Sappy, meaty, and just outright gulpable. A screaming winner of a wine; no pretense, not for contemplation, but with a good stew on a winter's night in front of a fire, very satisfying. (1206 views)
Tasted by Axone on 1/10/2016 & rated 92 points: Une bombe de fruits rouges, de la fraîcheur.
Excellent rapport qualité/prix.
Que demander de plus ? (1430 views)
Tasted by la turque on 10/31/2015 & rated 90 points: Opened to accompany a rosemary grilled whole chicken. A lovely match. The wine is ruby in colour, with a lovely nose of violets, spices and smoke. The acidity is vibrant and the fruit, while there, is subdued--which makes this a food wine. Delicious, drinking now. Give it a couple of hours of air. (1373 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 10/16/2015 & rated 90 points: When this was poured people around the room were saying, ahh now this is syrah. Hows that for typicity? The nose definitely points to the Northern Rhone with notes of blueberry, plum jam, violets, thyme, grilled meat, pepper, capers and tar. The palate is plush with reasonably good acid and moderate sweet tannin. For me it is a bit bombastic and young at the moment and I perceive a slight blue bubblegum note that I attribute to carbonic maceration. I expect this will settle down in a few years, so I'll try not to touch my next for at least a couple years. (1499 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 9/20/2015: Another delicious bottle. See 4/29/2015 note. (991 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 8/14/2015: Lovely Syrah, cracked pepper, violets, fresh and lively fruit. So much more material here compared to the similar wine from Andre Perret that we tried last night. Jim and Ea visiting from New Ro. (1022 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 7/2/2015: A nose of cracked pebber and violets. Lovely dark-fruited palate, alive and kicking, spices and smoked meat. Good level of acidity, this is is fresh. With BBQed meats, new potatoes and a green salad on a hot summer day at home. Fun and joyful wine. (1040 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 6/28/2015: Easy drinking real NRhone syrah. A treat with grilled burgers and Italian sausages. (892 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 4/29/2015: Easy-drinking wine with pure NRhone Syrah character. Very nice match with grilled hoisin-marinated chicken and grilled eggplant. (994 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 2/28/2015: Beautiful young fruity nose, very pretty wine on the palate, with "pure" Syrah fruit, violets and some meat. A bargain at the $11 I paid, and I think at twice the price. Would drink over the next couple of years. (846 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 2/18/2015: Even though this is supposed to be a quaffer, this time around the wine took a few hours to fully open up and it was much better on the second day after a night in the fridge. Juicy with a display of small berries and spices. Fresh and a joy to drink. (1012 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 12/13/2014: Love the weight. Floral with a little bloody beef mixed in. Good cut. Great with hearty food. Will have to see if I can round up some more of this one. (953 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 9/15/2014 & rated 90 points: Consistent with my previous bottle. About as perfect a "weeknight" Northern Rhone as one could possibly conceive. (1237 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 8/29/2014: Lighter extraction, plum core with lighter rim; bacon fat, violets, very aromatic, tart red fruit, brine, granite, awesome nose; lighter body, silky, rusty finish, soft; tasty. (805 views)
Tasted by nicefish on 7/7/2014 & rated 90 points: Very unique. Great aromatics, very spicy and zesty, almost a citrus quality. Deceptively mid-weight. Persistent finish. (1163 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 6/17/2014 & rated 89 points: Lovely, light-bodied Syrah but with plenty of juicy fruit and sizzling meats. A little floral aroma adds a nice touch. A fun weeknight wine that's open for business already. (1124 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 3/28/2014: A great, easy drinking Syrah from Jamet. The fruit is lively and spicy and there is a good level of acidity to provide freshness. A genuine wine with great local feel. Will go well with numerous dishes. (1122 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes

The expression “Vin de Pays” (country wine) first appeared legally in 1930, but the concept of Vin de Pays as a specific category had to wait until 1973 to be officially born. A Vin de Pays is a Vin de Table from a delimited area, which has to follow a certain number of quality control rules (stricter than for Vin de Table, but less strict than for AOC, the Official Controlled Appellation). There are 141 Vin de Pays denominations in France, with some obviously more obscure than others.

Les Collines Rhodaniennes (the Rhône Hills) is an area which straddles five departments: Rhône, Ardéche, Isère, Drôme and Loire. It produces primarily red wines from Gamay, Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir. This is basically the area lying at the back of Northern Rhône and its famous vineyards.

“A Vin de Pays was (originally) meant to be a quaffing wine that should display the broadest characteristics of its region’s greatest wines. It was to have a rustic charm and be a joy to drink, but nothing more. However, the Vin de Pays system, which had fewer restrictions than the AOC system, encouraged creative winemakers to produce wines in a way that they felt best expressed their terroir….The success of the Vin de Pays system lies not in creating more appellations but in freeing producers from them, which allows the most talented individuals to carve their own reputation.” Tom Stevenson
