Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 54 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Reblin on 4/21/2023 & rated 92 points: Excellent depth and ample fruit (378 views)
Tasted by ddmhunter on 8/9/2021 & rated 95 points: Aged well, an hour or so it opens very nicely! (1124 views)
Tasted by Life At Your Leisure 🍷 on 1/8/2021 & rated 95 points: Tasted blind against a 2010 Alain Voge Cornas. Dark ruby purple color turning violet at the rim. The nose is off-putting with pungent, multi-dimensional aromas of animal fat, espresso and leather on dark berries. The palate is full-bodied with savory acidity that lifts the ripe blackberry compote core all the way to the long, silky finish with hints of black balsam and spicy black pepper. Delicious! Drink now until 2035. 95 Pts. (1363 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 12/16/2020 & rated 85 points: Flabby, hot, no structure. Prob drink ok 10 years ago. (1473 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 4/4/2020 & rated 80 points: Tastes like lighter fluid. Bubbly and may be undergoing MLF. I would call this a flawed bottle, but after a run of 2011,2012 and 2013 Stolpman wines, all of which are undrinkable, it is not just this bottle! (1525 views)
Tasted by ajm2573 on 2/11/2020 & rated 88 points: Dark Red fruit on the nose, soft but present tannins, drinks better after 10 minutes but after 30 it loses its structure and finish. End of drinking window. (1331 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 6/2/2017 & rated 88 points: Black fruit, red fruit, pepper, acidity, cassis, herbal
Tea.

Acidity a little overwhelming. B+ (3417 views)
Tasted by ddsolomon2000 on 2/8/2017 & rated 91 points: Very nice (3214 views)
Tasted by Tony Poli on 12/16/2016 & rated 92 points: Tanzer compared this to la Landonne. Not that I've actually had any, but I don't think this is quite at that level. Quite good, though, and interesting. Theme was Syrah or Shiraz, blind. No one could quite place this. There was a No Girls and a Chave Hermitage on the table, Angeli held its own. Decanted for a couple of hours. Dark, no signs of age. Bright, complex nose, matched by a palate with a whole lot going on. Red and black fruit, licorice, spice, good balance. Long finish. Didn't taste French, not an Aussie fruit bomb, or a good Aussie Shiraz, it is its own thing. I'll let the other bottle age at least another couple of years. (3106 views)
Tasted by cellofello on 11/26/2016 & rated 95 points: Paired with lamb chops. No decant. "Wow" from everyone at the table. Smooth, rich and nuanced fruit - just sublime. (3062 views)
Tasted by Dan & Patti on 8/17/2016 & rated 94 points: Smooooth, dark fruit (3250 views)
Tasted by Jwd12 on 1/25/2016 & rated 93 points: Boy do I wish I had more of this wine. Deep dark red opaque. Nose had red berry and cherry some oak. Taste was superb, very smooth, with great structure and oaky berries, long finish, far and away the best syrah I have ever had. (2238 views)
Tasted by cdebeau on 12/21/2015 & rated 92 points: Exceptionally smooth, velvet finish (1532 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 11/14/2015 & rated 91 points: Black wine with violet edges. Nose of black olives (Givi analyzed this!). Notes of blueberries, blackberries, oak, with peppery briar entering in the end palate and lasting a very long time. Lovely soft tannins. Should have another six years of drinkability at minimum. (2130 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 8/23/2015 & rated 92 points: Tasted blind; double-decanted over the course of a day. Super inky purple color. The nose is very powerful with coffee and tar elements. Deliciously sweet and concentrated cherry with strong alcohol. Black pepper and coffee on the finish. Many years to go yet. (2218 views)
Tasted by ddsolomon2000 on 8/1/2015 & rated 85 points: Smells smoky, maybe corked. (2043 views)
Tasted by Dan & Patti on 1/4/2015 & rated 92 points: Improved over 24 hours (2309 views)
Tasted by Aideng12 on 12/23/2014 & rated 95 points: Let me begin by saying I bought this based on the CT rated and the great price I found it for ($36). I think it may have been mispriced. In any regard, I cut the capsule to find there had been leakage. The wine crept up much of the cork on all sides. Seeing this I was concerned, and upon opening a whiff of funk found my nose. A scent of barnyard or bad cork.

Giving the wine a chance, I continued to sip. Over the course of the next hour it changed more than I've ever experienced a wine change before, at least that I can remember.

The color is of a slight ruby. Highly fragrant, with notes of strawberries and raspberries. Something about it reminds me of Alban Vineyards Pandora 2005. On the palate there is a mix of both red and dark berries. The best I could come up with on the red notes is something like a tomato, but that does not do it justice. As I tried to hone in on the red notes I only noted stronger dark notes of plum, prune and perhaps a hint of licorice. (2082 views)
Tasted by ddmhunter on 9/8/2014: As good as I noted the last bottle, possibly better. (2323 views)
Tasted by Jwd12 on 8/19/2014 & rated 93 points: Great wine improving with age (2126 views)
Tasted by ledocq on 8/17/2014: Now that I've had a couple of years experience with various syrahs it's great to taste this again and confirm it's just the wine I thought it was. Excellent. (2426 views)
Tasted by Jwd12 on 10/21/2013 & rated 91 points: Enjoy with discerning winers (2581 views)
Tasted by Jwd12 on 10/11/2013 & rated 90 points: Absolutely a wonder wine (2203 views)
Tasted by ettalovesgoodwine on 7/5/2013 & rated 95 points: Opened a little earlier than recommended. Used Venturi to decant. Served with ground turkey, turmeric, cumin, garlic & shallots. So good! I'm glad I have 2 more bottles. (2333 views)
Tasted by taylormd on 5/30/2013 flawed bottle: Corked (2252 views)

Syrah Blend

The 2018 is 40% Merlot and 60% Syrah.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Central Coast AVA Wikipedia

Santa Ynez Valley

The Santa Ynez Valley AVA is the largest wine sub-region of Santa Barbara County and has the highest concentration of vineyards. The valley runs from east to west, between the Purisima Hills and the San Rafael Mountains in the north, and the Santa Ynez Mountains in the south. Although the valley is open to the Pacific Ocean in the west, the fact that it is relatively narrow means that limited cool air and fog is funnelled in. Low average rainfall and a very long growing season make the region ideal for quality wine production.

The diverse climates of Santa Ynez Valley mean that a wide array of wines is produced. The cool, western part of the AVA is predominantly planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, accompanied by other aromatic white varieties. Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) is able to flourish here, allowing some outstanding dessert wines to be produced in suitable vintages. Further east, the cooling effect of the ocean is lessened as both vineyard elevation and average temperatures increase. This warmer part of Santa Ynez Valley is more suited to fuller-bodied grape varieties, such as Syrah and Merlot.
more ...s expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive, while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhone blends.
